We currently have a stay booked for July 2019 at CR & but are considering switching to AKL. We are torn on what to do. We have never stayed in any of the deluxe resorts & chose CR based on its awesome location. We like the look & feel of AKL though. The location of AKL is not ideal & the times that we have eaten at Boma the buses have ran pretty slowly. For those of you that have stayed at both of these hotels, which would you recommend?

We prefer AKL for the theme, food options and overall feel. CR is closer to MK but AKL is closer to everything else.

Contemporary is FAR SUPERIOR to AKL IMHO.

Rooms are much larger and the location cant be beat. AKL has LOOOONG hallways, farthest away from everything except Animal Kingdom. Its only positive would be the pool and animal viewing. However can see more animals on the safari at Animal Kingdom then from your room depending on room location. Some rooms have a very poor view of animals.

Animal Kingdom lodge is my least favorite Deluxe on property.

IMHO, AKL is a better, overall resort, but the rooms are smaller and you are only close to AK. CR has bigger rooms and more conveniently located for travel to MK and EP. Picking which resort simply depends on what is most important to you. If the savings is substantial, you could also consider staying at AKL and, perhaps, utilizing lyft/uber/Minnie Vans to cut down on travel time.

I like both resorts but for different reasons, many which have already been pointed out above. AKL is my 3rd fave deluxe, mostly because it feels the most relaxing to me and the pool feels large and uncrowded. I am an early riser, and enjoy wandering the resort with coffee in hand while my kids are still sleeping - there are beautiful and interesting details all over the place.

Is your trip long enough to do a split stay? If so, maybe consider starting at CR when you will be hitting the parks more heavily and finishing at AKL when you feel less rushed. We have spent many pleasant days hanging AKL poolside, going into the parks in the late afternoon/evenings. Plus with the lower cost of AKL rooms, it could easily offset using uber/lyft etc as DW14 suggested if you find that the bus just isn't to your liking (we've never had a complaint though YMMV).

I like Kidani Village at AKL, plus all the amenities at Jambo are just a short walk away. The buses are dedicated, no multiple bus stops like Poly, The Grand, Bay Lake, etc. Any Disney bus can run slow? Buses at Kidani are first to pick up and first to drop off. I like the fact I can park under the resort and I can access my vehicle easily and quickly. I love the Pool area (2 hot tubs). Kids probably have the best water play area at Disney. It is a very nice calm and relaxing resort to come back to at the end of the day.

If you are staying in a Savannah View Room, then AKL. If you are staying in a regular room, that I would choose CR.

AKL all the way, unless you have children that require afternoon breaks in a room and plan to spend a large percentage of your time at MK. In that one situation I’d say the convenience of the contemporary trumps the overall wonderfulness if AKL.

We recently stayed at AKL and found that the bus were pretty much on track with all the other resorts we have stayed at in the past. We have stayed at BLT and the only real plus is being able to walk to MK from the resort as to needing buses to get anywhere from AKL. I also like the decor much better at AKL compared to CR.

I agree.

As others have said, it really depends on your goals for the trip and your family make up. Personally, I'd do AKL before CR any day of the week but CR is my least favorite of all the deluxe resorts. We don't spend a lot of time at MK so the location of CR isn't a huge draw for us. AKL is closer to all the other parks other than MK. People tend to think it's farther away than it is, it just seems that way because of the theaming.

Is Wilderness Lodge available? I feel like that’s the perfect middle ground between these two resorts

I agree with this.

However, if you want to stick with AKL versus Contemporary I would go with AKL. I just feel the Contemporary feels too much like a normal hotel. I like the theming so much more in other Deluxe resorts.

I think this really depends on what is important to you, and how you vacation. They are both great resorts, but I would choose the Contemporary.

1.) Location
You simply can't beat it. It's a short walk to MK (and you cant imagine how satisfying it is to bypass the long monorail/boat lines at park close and walk home). It has monorail access, allowing you to hotel hop on the loop and you're also able to monorail to EPCOT easily. It also shares a boat loop with Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness should you feel like going out to Hoop Dee Doo Revue or something at the campgrounds.
2.) Rooms
The rooms in Contemporary are huge. I can't remember if the Poly beats it in terms of sq feet or not, but the Contemporary rooms are not only big, but well appointed. It feels modern and new while still being comfortable. Very nicely appointed. And every room has a balcony with a great view. Even if you get lake view instead of MK, it's still very pleasant.
3.) Food Convenience
I don't know what age groups you're traveling with. But most people dont realize the options the resort has. California Grill is my fav restaurant in WDW and a must do for me, my big splurge meal. Chef Mickeys is fun character brunch for the little ones. The Wave is a hidden gem, its nothing particularly special but you can always get in w/o a reservation and they have a great breakfast buffet. There are also two lounges (one connected to Wave, and The Outer Rim). I also love having a "grab and go" breakfast counter to get my morning coffee and muffin (something many resorts lack) at Contemporary Grounds. Plus with the aforementioned monorail, you can easily get to the many restaurants and bars at the other loop resorts: Ohana, Trader Sams, dole whip at Pineapple Lanai, Kona Cafe, Narcoosee's, Citricos, Mizners Lounge, Trader Sams etc. The convenience of transportation here means you get to greatly expand the "world" of your vacation.

Cons
1.) Pool
This is really only if you're traveling with small kids who want elaborate pool themeing. The pool here is by all means fine, but certainly doesn't have the "wow" factor of other resorts with enormous slides or volcanoes etc.
2.) "Kid Appeal"
I always travel with adults (kids at heart!). But I've been told by many friends who are parents that the resort lacks appeal for their kids, based on the theme. Of course, to me the theme is perfect. I love the striking look of the A Frame building, the gorgeous mural in the grand canyon lobby, the way they light everything at night. But certainly, many of the other resorts have themes that are more fun for kids.

However, you have to take all this info in and apply it to your party and what is important to you. I travel to Disney with adults. We are also from NYC, and as such I'm used to a certain pace and I have zero patience waiting around for Disney's bus times. It drives me insane. So the convenience factor of the Contemporary is huge for us. Dining is also a big part of the trip for us, so its always great to be able to make restaurant reservations at the other monorail resorts and not have to worry about getting to them on time.

I would also agree with the above posters that Wilderness Lodge could be a good middle ground. It's not on the monorail, but its a boat away from Magic Kingdom, Contemporary, and Fort Wilderness. You could also transfer from that boat ride to the monorail, or take a very short/cheap Lyft ride to TTC or monorail hotels. The lobby is nearly identical in layout/construction Animal Kingdom Lodge (just obviously with a different theme) so it has that similar grand feeling to it. And while it doesn't have safari animals outside, the theme at WL truly does transport you to a different world. You can sit in front of the lobby fireplace, or out by the lake at Geyser Point Grill, and feel like your're in the pacific northwest. Whenever I think about doing AKL but balk at the transportation downsides, I come back to Wilderness Lodge. I recently stayed in one of the Copper Creek studio rooms and it was honestly my favorite room experience at Disney thus far. I know that adds a whole third option to your query, but it sounds like it could be the middle ground you are looking for.
