Does anyone with GERD do this, constantly clear their throat? Its so gross and so embarrassing, I am embarrassed to even mention it here and I don't even know most of y'all.

I'm curious if other people with GERD have the same issue, and if so, what do you do to get rid of it? I was on PPIs for a week and it just gave me a dry cough, I think all that stuff I would have normally got up was just suppresed do to the PPIs so I have stopped taking them. Now I am back to feeling like "gunk" is stuck in my throat pretty much 24/7.

Do you have allergies that go along with your GERD? How about asthma-another common one? I know my throat get gunky during allergy season and I tend to clear it a lot. I have also read that it can become a habit. Also some people with mild tourette's syndrome clear their throat a lot, it is a tick for them.

Have you tried rinsing your sinuses with neti pot or squirt bottle? I used to get really bad sinus infections and sore throats until I started rinsing every day with the squirt bottle.

I just read something about neti pot? What is that?

I think it does become a habit of sorts. Its like a vicious cycle, once you start its hard to stop.

It's also on the link for the squirt bottle. It's a little tea pot that you use to pour fluid through your sinuses (over the sink) to get all the gunk out. I like the bottle better. I never have sore throats or allergy problems any more. I'm totally addicted to rinsing.

Thank you, I didn't even notice that was a link. I am going to get some of this stuff and give it a try. In addition to GERD I have lots of sinus headaches. Hopefully this will help.

Good luck. It's a little weird at first, but you get used to it. It's just part of my morning routine now.

I have both GERD and lots of sinus issues. My cough (and my frequent sinus headaches) were almost completely cured with the use of steroid nasal spray daily. I used to have horrible sinus headaches every couple of weeks that could last for up to 3 days, plus a chronic cough, and now I have neither. :)

I was never clearing my throat with my GERD issues. I was always trying to take really deep breaths though because I felt like I was not getting enough air. I never had any trouble with GERD until I was diagnosed with Celiac's Disease and then it got so bad that my doctor decided I had to be put on daily medication. So I was put on aciphex which is a acid reducer and my GERD symptoms have disappeared. The only time they act up is 1)if I eat too much or 2) if i have a sinus issue and have post nasal drip.

My son was always clearing his throat before he was diagnosed with GERD. He would wake up not able to breathe, had the clearing the throat cough, and when they looked down his throat, his layrnx was red and swollen. Now that he takes Prilosec, he only has that cough when he has allergies or a cold.

If I stop my PPIs for about a week or so, the constant throat clearing, mucous crap is there. Yep, it's the acid washing up and irritating your throat. In fact, there is a "special" type of GERD that does this--it's called LPR (don't ask me to spell it out).

The cure for it is really taking PPIs. Have you tried different ones. They all have different side effects.

Oh, I also wanted to add that sinus stuff will cause it too. Besides the whole GERD thing and those meds, I also use Flonase and they really helps with the throat clearing.

My dd11 was diagnosed with Gerd/Acid Reflux/Asthma. The allergist put her on Prilosec too. It has helped tremendously.

Honestly, I never made the connection until now! I used to always clear my throat and I hated it. Now that I'm on Prilosec (and before that, Nexium), I haven't cleared my throat in a long time unless I have a cold.

I do it all the time, but I also have a panic disorder, which mainly sits in my throat..so esy, I think for me it is a combo of both, even with meds.

I have a panic disorder which mainly sits in my throat as well as sinus issues and GERD issues. The combination of Aciphex (for GERD), Lexapro (for anxiety) and a prescription strength decongestant (Decongestine TR) seem to work relatively well unless I get a cold or sinus infection or I have a full on panic attack which have greatly diminished with meds.

Wow - live and learn - I didn't either. Just started taking Nexium - I was so busy celebrating no more heartburn and other symtoms, I missed the clearing of throat gone.

To the OP - sounds like it could be related. I'm going to ask my Dr. next week when I visit.

Wow I find this very interesting. A friends daughter started clearing her throat a lot about a yr ago. The Dr suggested she's just doing it for attention since she shows no sinus or asthma symptoms. I will have to mention GERD to the mom. considering the food allergy and gastric-intestinal issues that both parents and the brother have, it would make a lot of sense that the DD might have related issues.

I also have GERD and sinus issues - seems that the two of them go hand-in-hand a lot! I now use a sinus cleanse in the shower every morning. My dr. suggested that I do it 2x a day but that doesn't always work out.

I was also put on 40mg prescription Prilosec and after 3 weeks I noticed a big difference in my stomach - not as much pain! But then I started reading on-line (yes, a dangerous thing to do!) that many people who take Prilosec gain weight!! Has anyone had experience with that?? I am over-weight so the last thing I would want to do is GAIN more! It would stink that I finally found something to make me feel better, but it will make me fatter! :(

Back to subject....try the sinus cleanse. I swear by it and tell everyone I know about it.
