Constantly clearing throat? GERD?

I also have GERD and sinus issues - seems that the two of them go hand-in-hand a lot! I now use a sinus cleanse in the shower every morning. My dr. suggested that I do it 2x a day but that doesn't always work out.

I was also put on 40mg prescription Prilosec and after 3 weeks I noticed a big difference in my stomach - not as much pain! But then I started reading on-line (yes, a dangerous thing to do!) that many people who take Prilosec gain weight!! Has anyone had experience with that?? I am over-weight so the last thing I would want to do is GAIN more! It would stink that I finally found something to make me feel better, but it will make me fatter! :(

Back to subject....try the sinus cleanse. I swear by it and tell everyone I know about it.

Jill

I haven taken Prilosec since 1998 and it has never affected my weight. Or at least I don't think so. I've never heard of the weight gain thing. Part of it could be that since you feel so much better or Prilosec, you probably start eating better.

I know that before I was treated I was hardly eating anything and my weight did drop down about 10 lbs because it got so bad. Once the GERD symptoms went away, I started eating more normally and put my weight back on. But I just went to what I normally should be. I didn't put on anything excess.

I went to 2 differant drs because I have had so much mucous that it makes me throw up- each dr(a pulmonologist & and and ENT) both said its acid reflux. the ent put me on nexium(which is killing me since its so expensive)

Both me and my husband cant believe that its acid reflux because i dont have heartburn at all(or burping).

Has anyone who was diagnosed with acid reflux also have mucous production.

I basically feel like crap all the time and because of all the mucous all am short of breath and I cough alot.

Please help because I have felt like crap for 4 mths now and I really want to get on with my life-actually have a life again.....

Wow I find this very interesting. A friends daughter started clearing her throat a lot about a yr ago. The Dr suggested she's just doing it for attention since she shows no sinus or asthma symptoms. I will have to mention GERD to the mom. considering the food allergy and gastric-intestinal issues that both parents and the brother have, it would make a lot of sense that the DD might have related issues.

I'm sorry to hijack, but I have to say that some doctors should not be treating kids. They refuse to believe that parents know what they're talking about!!!

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled thread!!

I never had a day of heartburn with mine. If you truly have acid reflux, the acid will wash up and irritate your throat and then all the way up to your naso-pharyngeal area. Then your body will produce mucous in an attempt to protect.

Having said that, you should NEVER be given a diagnosis of acid reflux or GERD without having an upper endoscopy done. If they didn't do this, then they are just guessing and you could be taking Nexium for no reason.

I never put the connection together (mucus and acid reflux) I went to my DR a month ago with pain in my upper abdomen and trouble swallowing and he prescribed protonix for GERD. Ive been on it a month and the mucous production in my nose is out of control.I am constantly clearing my throat and recently I am having trouble swallowing for all the gunk in my throat. I have stared taking a presciption antihistamine and using the nasal rinse thingy daily (which seems to make it worse???) and nothing is helping.

I am scheduled for a upper endoscopy this month but I am scared to death! For anyone who has had it done how bad is it? Was your throat sore afterward? How long did it take?

The absolute worst part of an upper endoscopy is worrying about for weeks prior to the actual test. It is very easy, painless, and quick. My doctor told me that it takes about 7 minutes to. I have had it done twice and never got a sore throat from it nor could I even detect that anything had been done to me.

Your mucous production seems like an awful lot. I'm not thinking reflux with those amounts.

Thanks for your reply! Seriously I am a big ol baby and I am freaking out over having to have this done but your reply has calmed me a bit me a bit!

Edit: I feel like I know nothing. (just starting an SLP program this fall, so what do I know other than swallowing disorders/dysphagia can be serious. I had something to say, but then realized the more I learn, the less I know.)

:grouphug: to the people here dealing with this. (if you have to clear your throat constantly or have a gurgling sound in your speech, be sure to tell your doctor.)
