conspiracy theories

It doesn’t matter what I think, everyone should use critical thinking to do the research and draw their own conclusions if something in the political world doesn’t quite seem right to them. What new policies are our elected representatives pushing? Do they truly benefit the American people or, big business or one political party? How is it that senators make less than $200,000 a year yet end up amassing 200 million dollars or more? Who decides what is an “essential business”? Why can someone buy clothes at Target during lockdown while a mom and pop clothing boutique goes out of business? Do any Covid orders infringe on any civil liberties? Can states pass policies that go against the constitution? Who profits from certain Covid therapeutics? Who funds the research? Is research unbiased? Can widespread mail in voting lead to voting fraud? Why is there a push to release criminals from prisons yet people are arrested for going to the park or operate their business?
Dr Fauci said today that the majority of people will recover so why are we continuing lockdown for months? Why did the goal posts change for lockdown from slowing the spread (as to not overwhelm hospitals)
to now maintaining lockdown until a therapeutic or vaccine even though hospitals are furloughing staff due to low patient admissions?

Paragraphs are your friend. It’s really hard to read a wall of continuous text.

Why blindly believe everything the government or health officials are telling you? Didn't they once say smoking was good for you? That lobotomies were helpful? That thalidomide was ok during pregnancy? Why are we told mercury is extremly dangerous but we must switch to household LED bulbs and have vaccines with mercury in them? Can't you feel in your gut something is wrong with this Covid situation? Why is it that information about Covid or vaccine "conspiracy theories" are being censored by Twitter and Youtube but they don't censor conspiracy theories about Bigfoot, fake moon landing, or the many quack cures for other diseases? With the Covid lockdown, why is it that you could go to a liquor store but could not go to a dentist? That women could get abortions but not a hip replacement? That your pet can get groomed but you can't get a haircut? That you can be in a crowded subway car, Walmart, Target, but can't go to the beach, park or to a small mom and pop boutique or library? If Covid is so contagious and deadly, why aren't the homeless and front line workers like cashiers and postal workers dying by the thousands? Majority of deaths from Covid are elderly in nursing homes and they have poor health to begin with. We have been told for years that older adults must have socialization, fresh air and exercise for their physical and mental health but now they must remain locked down in their homes or assisted living bedrooms and not see their families at all? Why aren't the Covid health officials talking about ways to build up the immune system like good nutrition, Vitamin D/sunshine (studies have come out indicating people dying with Covid have low Vitamin D levels), spirituality, and exercise? Instead they tell us we can't go to gyms, church, yoga classes or to the beach? I am not denying that Covid is a serious problem but it is also important to step back and do some critical thinking when some things just don't make sense.

No you should go outside but churches and large religious groups spread it like wildfire by me. Stop with this gov is trying to take away my religion, just use common sense where large groups of people are, it is dangerous. Find other ways to worship, or get Vitamin D and do your yoga outside in your yard. I have neighbors by me dying, a house I can see right now out my window, and yes my husband's aunt died the other day in a nursing home, as elderly and people with immune system issues are more at risk. That means something doesn't it?? They are not throwaway people.. Some of the places they say you can go like to Walmart, not me I haven't, are because people need essentials as compared to other places.

I won't comment on the validity of Snopes, but did you really just use the Daily Mail as your factual source? That's hysterical. And irony at it's best!

So basically any website I site won’t be good enough for you.

Here is another site though citing the legal battle the owner is dealing with, I’m guessing that won’t be good enough for you either but here anyways:

Maybe try researching your own as well rather than letting CNN or ABC tell you how to think.

I heard another recently. These military jet flyovers that are being done in large cities, to celebrate the healthcare workers. These have some kind of nefarious purpose ... they are spreading mind control chemicals or something to that effect. The "celebration" is just an excuse.
If the chemicals are sedating, I say "bring it". I've just about had enough today. :sad1:

Ten fact- and bias-checking sites (Source: iste.org):

Fact Check. This nonpartisan, nonprofit project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania monitors the factual accuracy of what is said by U.S. political players, including politicians, TV ads, debates, interviews and news releases.

Media Matters. This nonprofit and self-described liberal-leaning research center monitors and corrects conservative misinformation in the media.

NewsBusters. A project of the conservative Media Research Center with a right-wing bias, NewsBusters is focused on “documenting, exposing and neutralizing liberal media bias.”

Open Secrets. This nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit website run by the Center for Responsive Politics tracks how much and where candidates get their money.

Politifact. This Pulitzer Prize winning website rates the accuracy of claims by elected officials. Run by editors and reporters from the independent newspaper Tampa Bay Times, Politicfact features the Truth-O-Meter that rates statements as “True,” “Mostly True,” “Half True,” “False,” and “Pants on Fire.”

ProPublica. This independent, nonprofit newsroom has won several Pulitzer Prizes, including the 2016 Prize for Explanatory Reporting. ProPublica produces investigative journalism in the public interest.

Snopes. This independent, nonpartisan website run by professional researcher and writer David Mikkelson researches urban legends and other rumors. It is often the first to set the facts straight on wild fake news claims.

The Sunlight Foundation. This nonpartisan, nonprofit organization uses public policy data-based journalism to make politics more transparent and accountable.

Washington Post Fact Checker. Although the Washington Post has a left-center bias, its checks are excellent and sourced. The bias shows up because they fact check conservative claims more than liberal ones.

not until you show me one that says they are
https://www.factcheck.org/2018/03/meme-falsely-claims-exposed-snopes-com/
In 2009, we addressed Snopes.com’s alleged political bias and wrote that we found the website’s work to be “solid and well-documented,” and that its articles appeared “utterly poker-faced” when tackling rumors about Democratic and Republican politicians.

We also noted at the time: “We even link to Snopes.com when it’s appropriate rather than reinvent the wheel ourselves, which we consider high praise.”

At no point did we ever “expose” the myth-busting website as “an extremely liberal propaganda site with an agenda to discredit anything that appears to be conservative.”

That false claim was made in a meme that began circulating on Facebook and other platforms in February. Several of our readers have asked us about it.

The meme says that Snopes.com has been “busted” as a “100% fake fact-checking site,” and that the Democratic National Committee and hedge fund billionaire George Soros have been “exposed” as its “clients.” It also features two photos purportedly showing the “Snopes CEO” meeting with Soros, who has long supported Democratic candidates and causes.

But David Mikkelson, the founder and executive editor of Snopes.com, is not in either photo. One shows Soros shaking hands with Gordon Bajnai, an economist and former prime minister of Hungary from 2009 to 2010, and the other photo shows Soros with Andrew Baron, the son of the late trial lawyer and Democratic fundraiser Fred Baron.

The meme also falsely claims that “Snopes has no employees,” when it actually has 10 editors and writers, according to its staff page. The website has posted its sources of funding online as well, and there is no mention of the DNC or Soros.

The otherwise bogus meme managed to get one thing right, though.

Snopes.com is one of several organizations working with Facebook to help identify and label false stories flagged by readers on the social media network.

FactCheck.org is participating in the same fact-checking initiative.

Done.

I read a conspiracy theory online a few years ago. Some women wrote a book about how computer/tech companies are embedding code into computers, cell phones, tablets and video games that make people addicted to them. She complained about how no matter how many times she told her son's school that he wasn't allowed to use computers, they still took him to the computer lab. She pulled him from that school and sent him to a special school where he lived outside in a tent for a year and a half to break him of his "addiction"! According to her after the year and a half, he still wasn't cured and was still experiencing "cravings".

Kids with parents that believe this... how are they doing their schoolwork during lockdown? It's not like the parent is going to allow the child to video chat with their teacher.

Forget schoolwork, how are those kids going to be employable? Microsoft Word/Excel are pretty much assumed skills in most industries.

Yes...I know a few folks who believe or disbelieve a whole host of things. THey are college educated and all say they obtain their "news" from the same network...Fox.

You seem to mention ANYTHING negative to "they all watch FOX". I have to say, it's tiring and very discriminatory. I watch FOX along with other channels and I do not believe any of the mentioned conspiracy theories. We get it. You hate FOX and think all people who watch FOX are ignorant lemmings.

It's just an opinion. A lot of people share it. Many others feel differently. Everyone is still free to their own opinions, and even to change them whenever and however they wish.

It's a subset. Of course not all people who watch FOX believe these bizarre conspiracy theories, but Fox does regularly interview people who do not have qualifications or the expertise they claim. This includes the Constitutional law professor (!) who predicted only 500 COVID deaths in the US and the guy who was introduced as an "Advisor" to Stanford Medical School who claimed a study found 100% effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19. That was not the result of the study and he had no relation to Stanford and he has no expertise in the field.

I appreciate that you use multiple sources of news and do not automatically believe everything you hear on Fox. Once upon a time I too sometimes watched Fox until they regularly promoted things like conspiracy theories. I worked with Tucker Carlson back when he was somewhat sane. Before Fox he hosted a show on PBS that was very fair, though unfortunately not well produced IMO.
