Atheist Sign Joins Capitol Holiday Display This Year

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- An atheistic sign is included in the state Capitol's holiday display that includes a holiday tree and a Christian nativity scene.

The sign, a new addition this year, is sponsored by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The sign reads, "Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

Annie Laurie Gaylor, foundation co-president, said in a prepared statement that the sign is a reminder of the "real reason for the season, the winter solstice." The solstice, on Dec. 21 this year, is the shortest day of the year.

The Capitol has had a holiday tree, provided by the Association of Washington Business, for 19 years.

In 2006, it was joined by a menorah sponsored by a Seattle Jewish group. A menorah is a candelabrum that recognizes Hanukkah.

That prompted a lawmaker from Spokane to stage a protest at the Capitol, demanding the holiday tree be called a "Christmas tree." It also led a local real estate agent to sue the state to allow the nativity display depicting the birth of Jesus.

There have been no requests for a menorah display this year.

The tree -- officially called the "Capitol Holiday Kids Tree" -- is part of a charity drive for rural fire departments.

A lighting ceremony for the tree -- up to 30 feet tall -- is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.

In Olympia...shoulda guessed. I hope the menorrah is put in the display, and I hope they start calling it a CHRISTMAS tree. It's not a "holiday candle holder" is it?

And oh yeah...that sign is TOTALLY a reminder of the winter solstace. Isn't the message perfectly clear in that regard?

Reminds me of my uncle who stood outside city hall with a "God?" sign. He wanted it displayed next to the nativity. He's a devout agnostic and thinks we're all wackos because we go to church. Oh well. I still love him. He's a hoot.

Been lurking mostly - been in and out of town - busy busy here. Husband kinda picked a lousy time to get a new job. Hmm, my elf name is Holly-Tummy... What a coincidence, I love to eat, and I love the name Holly, so much so that it was almost my daughter's name!!!

My daughter was due December 27th, and I was so excited to be having a baby around Christmas, my absolutely favorite holiday, and was hoping it would be a girl, not that I wouldn't love a boy, but had two boys ages 5 & 6 at the time. I told EVERYONE that if I had a girl I would name her Holly Nicole.

On the way to the hospital, on December 17th, I was thinking that Holly really doesn't sound like a prima ballerina's name, so I changed the name to Lauren Elizabeth, which I thought sounded very elegant. My husband at the time, said he really liked the name Allison, so we made a deal. If she was bald she'd be Allison, and if she had hair she'd be Lauren. We figured this was fair since our first son had a head of hair that could have been styled the day he was born, and our second son was what we called a cubie head, you know, bald like a cue ball! We had a girl, ten days early, 9 lb, 12 oz, named Lauren Elizabeth, with lots of hair! Except everyone kept calling me to congratulate me on the birth of Holly!

As it turned out, she HATED dance classes, so my dreams of her being the lead in the "Nutcracker" someday were dashed. Guess I could have named her Holly after all!

Here are my three cuties on Thanksgiving this year.

Funny, I think the verbage on the sign couldn't be further from the truth. It's amazing to see what energy they spend in the attempt to convert our belief to their disbelief. Ah well...God bless 'em and Merry Christmas!
