I don't think Huckabee or anyone else is going to change the First Amendment, and I don't think it would work anyway. Some people are just so dead said against Christianity that it wouldn't matter if it was made the law-they'd go to jail rather than accept it.

I pray to God that nobody is ever successful at changing the First Amendment, however there are plenty of people already lobbying for some restrictions to it *cough* fairness doctrine *cough*, and many many people have already felt the effects of what can happen when they dare to question the almighty teflon man currently occupying a non-existant office. Freedom of speech in their opinion, only applies if it is in agreement with what they think.

Well maybe I am a rare conservative bird, but I believe that people who don't subscribe to a particular religion, and athiests as well, are also moral people. You can't force people to have faith, but it doesn't mean that their lives aren't positive and constructive. They are just different, and it isn't my place to judge their relationship with God. Now I understand the concern about laws which go against some aspects of people's faith, but in the end if we each live our lives according to what we believe is right, then I think that's the best we can do. There will be those inclined to witness and spread the word, but that should be the work of individuals and not in association with the government. If the government ever tried to impose restrictions on people expressing their religious views, then I would have a problem with that.

The only atheists I've ever come in contact with seem like pretty angry folks to me. I mean, there was that fellow that wrote the book last year-he was on TV a few times and he seemed to be a pretty miserable person. I guess they can follow a moral code, but without God-what do they base it on? A Christian tries to do what's right because they're trying to follow the example of Christ. If you don't have that foundation, what would the reasoning be?

to you Tink. I lost my first, too. Thirteen years ago. It broke my heart. I went into a pretty bad depression for about a year afterward. She was supposed to born in late December, 1995. I think of her every Christmas.

Ours was due Oct 17th, 2006. That's my DSis' birthday and DH's grandpa's birthday. My nephew was born 8 days after my baby was due (same year) on Oct. 25th so even his birthday is bittersweet for me.
My DSis and I were pregnant at the same time both times. I was ahead the first time, she was a trimester ahead this last time. My niece turned one year Oct 9th (yes, she has irish twins!) and my son will be one January 24th.

I don't know any Buddhists either, but I think they have a foundation for living a peaceful and moral life. I guess my point is that there are so many beliefs, and I think that there are some things that have a sort of universal appeal to the good spirit in all people.

It does seem that way often, doesn't it? Christianity is so often mocked in the media, etc.

Oh I agree that Christianity seems to be taking a bit of a bashing, especially in comparison to some other religions. There is a segment of society who are rather hostile towards Christianity. Those people tend to paint with broad brushes and focus on the negative, but who knows what leads individuals to such feelings of contempt. I was enrolled in a Christian school for Kindergarten and first grade. We didn't attend church on a regular basis, but I guess my Mom justified it by the fact that I was attending a religious school. Well apparently that wasn't acceptable to the pastor, and he called us into his office. He informed my parents, with me sitting there, that our souls were in jeopardy of damnation if we didn't make a stronger commitment to God. I know it took my Mom everything she had to bite her tongue and walk out of his office without telling him to go to hell. However, what he said left a lasting impression on me, and not in a positive way. Thankfully he didn't ruin my faith, but just instilled in me at a young age to be leary of people in positions of religious authority. I have often considered though how such a situation could have had the potential to have turn me away from God. So I carry that with me and it reminds me that there are many circumstances which can lead a person away from organized religion. People don't tend to lash out at something unless they've been personally hurt by it.

It's not a traditional place-we have a rock band! Our Pastor is really young, but he has a real gift at helping us see how the Bible pertains to our lives every day.

I might have stayed away from religion, but I really wanted to offer that foundation to my children, and didn't want my negative experience to be the reason that they missed out. I am very grateful that we found a wonderful church with supportive pastors.

I had a very good pastor when I was growing up who went to Lakeland, then to Bradenton to pastor a church. I don't know if he is still down there or not, he was with a non-denominational church last time I heard from him. His name is Mike Hailey. I wish I could remember the name of his church but I can't at the moment

I want a President who "answers to a higher authority" than the ACLU and the NEA and who thinks about the morality of the laws that he signs. That's all I'm really looking for. I think we're going to see very clearly what happens when people who don't put God first run this country in the next 4 years.

hi. resident athiest here.

i respect everybody's religion, christmas trees, saying "under god" in the pledge of allegience. I believe this country was founded upon Christian beliefs and people throughout the world need to accept and respect that. however, i don't want a president who puts God first in running this country. i want a president who puts our constitution first in running this country. if the president's belief in God guides him, all the better. but our constitution comes first in running the country. i see a distinction there.
