Other things you can do but only if the airlines will do it with no charge:
1. Ask to modify your reservation so the connection time is longer (try for at least two and a half hours). You can stand by for an earlier flight at the connection point if the first flight gets in without any problems.
2. Ask to modify your reservation to be a non-stop.
3. If the two ideas above don't work, and when you get to the airport the first flight is delayed and you might miss your connection, repeat the two requests above and if that still fails, ask for a refund of the entire ticket.
Do not agree to pay extra for any of the above accommodations.
You want to create evidence that if you foresee a connection problem and offer the airline a chance to address your concern. Then if you are still stranded overnight at the connection point. you have a much better chance of getting a free hotel room.
Get the name of every person you talk to, whether on the phone or at a ticket counter.
