Congresswoman Corrine Brown (FL)

The U.N. is asked to observe elections in countries where there is a pattern or history of fraud & abuse in elections. I'm not sure how much it helps to have some U.N. people observing people vote.

The U.S. does not have a history of abuse and fraud. Alas, in FL what we have are people who cannot read/understand voting instructions and thus invalidate their ballot. These same people then cry "foul", thus following the SOP of not accepting responsibility for one's actions and always being a "victim."

What continues to amaze me is that the alleged fraud and abuse in FL too place in counties controlled by the Democrat party, using ballots designed by the Democrats, using voting methods approved by the Democrats.

Yet, in the end, it's the Republicans' fault. :upsidedow

Actually, Steve, if you read the article I posted, it wasn't about stupid people messing up their ballots, it was about people that were wrongly disenfranchised by Bush's brother's state government.

I'll agree that we don't have a long history of election fraud, but I still don't get the complaints...ALL of which are coming from the Republican side....It may not be the case, but the complaining, frankly, makes it look like you've got something to hide.

TO BUMBLES Speaking of insults to humanity

I re-read it... my apologies, kind sir. Forgot to ensure my brain was engaged before putting my cyber-mouth into gear. :o

I do agree with you that the way FL has handled the whole purging felons from the voting registers leaves the appearance of something shady going on, even if everything was being done on the "up & up." I would have thought after 2000 the state would strive to avoid this Keystone Kop appearance with voting, but sadly they either cannot or will not.

But I don't believe we need to call in the U.N. to observe or "police" elections in the U.S. Somehow, we've got to manage to do a better job -- or put people into positions that have enough intelligence to do the job right.

And what about the fact that the major manufacturer of the touch-screen machines is a major contributor to the Bush campaign ? And that the machines have shown a ridiculously large susceptibility to tampering ? And that the machines are not accountable for a recount, and provide no verification to the voter of who they voted for ?

Like I said, I'm not claiming that there was intentional voter fraud in Florida in 2000, or that it will happen this time. But that's an awful lot of smoke, wouldn't you say ? Why not ask an independant agency to come in and make sure that things go as they should ? Wouldn't that give us much more credibility when demanding that other nations undergo the same scrutiny ?

Perhaps, more importantly, we have to be percieved as having done a bettter job. Why not have observers, insuring that no one could cry foul?

The idea of having outside observers from different countries monitoring our elections, well that idea scares the crap out of me. I don't think the UN has any place in our election process, it's basically saying well we can't even run our own elections right, can you help us? The ramifications of that I wouldn't want to see, it could be seen as a weakness and I think we would loose a lot of credibility as a world leader.

Let the UN stick to helping countries like Iraq, we're the most powerful nation in the world we can handle our own elections.

Just my thoughts. ;)

::yes:: ITA. I agree that there is the appearance of impropriety, but I don't believe that anyone has proven that there is intentional fraud and abuse going on in FL. Stupidity, lack of coordination, lack of communication, and complete ineptitude -- most likely. But none of that proves intent to defraud or disenfranchise voters.

If someone proves that there is fraud, abuse or a conspiracy to disenfranchise voters in FL, then I would consider asking for some outside intervention. But as palmtreegirl said, this is the U.S., not some third world country. We have the ability and the responsibility to do this right. We also have the ability and responsibility to determine if something is going wrong. I, for one, don't want to jump the gun, assume something is wrong before all the evidence is gathered and examined.
