We bought DVC in October so I'm still learning how all this works. If I needed some extra points to finish out our trip we are doing date removed, what is the difference between renting points and transferring points? I see a lot of posts where it says points for rent, but not transfer.
Bascially, a transfer is a transaction between members by Member services.
A rental is a transaction directly between 2 members. Transfers are limited (either in or out) to one per UY. If you only need 24 points or less you can purchase "one time use points" directly from Member services.
Hmmm. I knew I could purchase through Disney, but I think they are about $15.00/pt or so and I see them here for $10 or $11. Wouldn't be much extra, but enough for a vinylmation.
So is there a reason for doing one over the other?
With a transfer of points into your account, you would be able to make your own reservation and have control over all aspects of that reservation (ability to cancel, add dining, Magical Express, make room requests). This is true whether the transfer is from another member or the up-to 24 points from MS.
With a rental, the other member will control all aspects of the transaction and any changes/additions you'd want would have to be done thru that member since MS would not allow any contact regarding the reservation except via the member controlling the points.
Ugh. I would not want to have to call someone else to handle my reservations. So I'll need to look for points available for transfer once I know if I need them or not.
If you only need a few points, it's usually better to borrow from the next use year. That's because it could be tough to find a member willing to transfer a small number of points. Since members only get one point transfer per use year, most of them want to reserve it for a larger amount.
The $15 points for Disney are only an option if you are booking after the 7 month window opens. They are not valid before then.
A rental of points is when someone else makes the reservation for you. A transfer is when you are buying points from someone for one time to have them deposited in your dvc account so you can make the reservation yourself.
You are only allowed one transfer in or out of your account per use year.
You cannot assume that when someone on the rent/trade board says they have points available to rent that you can get that member to transfer a small number of points to you. Members are limited to one transfer per use year. However, they can rent by using their own points to set up a reservation in another's name up to 20 times a use year since that is not considered an actual transfer of points. Those renting points on the rent/trade are very often looking to do a room rental transaction not a transfer and if they are actually looking to transfer it is usually for the entire amount of points designated not some portion of them. In other words, you should not assume it will be easy to find someone on the rent/trade board to simply transfer to you the exact and small number of points you might need to complete your own reservation.

I think that your best option, although a bit more, is to either borow your points, or just get them from Disney. I think it would be very difficult to find someone willing to transfer in so few points..
Plus, many times, owners may want a fee via Paypal to do the tranfer and in your case, that may end up bringing it closer to the Disney price anyway.
I'd go the 15$ per point from Disney, but if you are opposed to that, then the borrowering route. If you need more next yr look for a bigger transfer.
I would think finding someone with only 5-25 points who would transfer would be tough. They have to be current UY, meaning that person would have access to bank them. (As you cannot transfer banked points. )

The advantage with Disney is it's a quick transation and it's done. It's very unlikely you will find someone who will transfer details removed points and use up their one per year transfer.
From the side of having provided the points: I was able to rent to someone points I had banked. I would not have been able to transfer those points because they were banked.
