Confused about Use Year

I'm just wondering how complicated it gets to manage your points if you take trips that span two use years. Say for example I have an October use year and I want to book a trip for Sep 29 - Oct 4. Will I need to have points left in the current use year for Sep 29-30 and points in the next use year for Oct 1-3? Or, can the points for a trip that spans use years come from either the current or the next use year?

I'm looking into DVC and when I was thinking about when we would be most likely to visit (so I can estimate how many points I need to purchase) I realized that some of our stays would start at the end of one month and last a few days into the next month. That got me wondering about how whether I need to be concerned about what use year we purchase.

Thanks!

Gosh that's a good question. I'm curious about that too!

If you have enough points in the current Use Year for the entire stay, you will need to bank the points needed for the days in October- otherwise, you can just use the current points for the nights in September and use your 2005 points for the nights in October.

This is the one situation where it's possible to use 4 years of points for one trip. I'll use years 1-4 to illustrate. You would bank year 1, borrow year 3 and use the points from year two for the days in the month before your Use Year begins and then borrow points from year 4 for the nights in the next Use Year.

If your Use Year is October and you plan a trip for Sept 25- October 5, 2006- you could bank all points from your 2005 UY and borrow points from your 2007 UY for the September nights and then use the 2006 points and borrow from 2007 for the October nights.

I hope this helps! :)

Yes.

Yes.

Only if you properly bank and borrow the points.

You don't have to be concerned, but it would certainly be a lot easier to manage your points if you bought a use year that took the dates of your probable stays into consideration. This would be especially true if you ever had to cancel one of those trips.

If it were me, and my stays would regularly include the end of September and the first part of October, I'd look for an August use year. Of course that assumes that I'd mostly be traveling in the fall /winter and not during the summer months.

Best wishes -

Thanks very much for the responses. I have a pretty good understanding now which use years will work best for us and which will require more careful point management. Thanks!
