confused about transfers

My DH and I banked 170 points last use year and will unfortunatly not be able to use them by February 2006 (we just had a baby! ). We are considering looking for a DVC member that would want to do a transfer of points, but we are new at this and have some questions.

Would the reservations be made by us or the member that we transfer the points to? Whose name would the reservation be in?

I'm assuming that the transfer wouldn't be done until payment is received, what method of payment is usually used in these situations? Is there a contract needed?

We are a bit nervous about renting the points to someone we don't know and having the reservation be in our name. That is why we are hoping to transfer the points instead. Is transferring the points really as easy as it seems? How good are our chances of finding someone interested before we lose our points? Can we transfer points to more than one person if there is no interest in the full 170 points?

If the points have already been banked, they cannot be transferred to another member. Only current points may be transferred. You can try to rent the points thru the DVC Rent/Trade Board here on the DIS, but you will need to make a reservation for your renter using the points.

Thanks for the quick replies, but unfortunatly now my question is changed. I am very bummed to hear that we can't transfer banked points So, how do we go about renting our points? Has anyone ever had a bad experience with this? I'm concerned about making the reservation in my name and there being a problem at the resort. Should I worry about liability? How does the payment work? Would you ask for payment prior to booking the reservation? Again, what are our chances of renting these points to be used before Feb. 2006?

Actually, you don't make the reservation in your name, you make it in your renter's name.

You might want to begin by reading the <a href="http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=323442">Rent/Trade Board FAQ</a> and if you still have specific questions post them here on the DVC Board.

Basically, you are just making a reservation in someone else's name and expecting to receive payment for that reservation. You may set whatever terms you will be comfortable with. You will also have complete comtrol over the reservation right up until your renter checks in at the resort- so if some aspect of payment isn't forthcoming, you can always cancel the reservation and regain use of your points up until they expire.
