ORLANDO, Fla. -- Despite reports of a case of swine flu in Orlando, the Orange County Health Department director told Local 6 News the case has not been confirmed.

Dr. Kevin Sherin from the Orange County Health Department said there has not been any confirmed cases of swine flu in Orlando.

Someone who may have visited Mexico and returned to Orlando was tested for swine flu, but the results have not come back from the state lab in Jacksonville, Sherin said. The test was sent out Monday night.

A local TV station reported Tuesday morning that there was a confirmed case of swine flu at the Florida Hospital.

Sherin said people who think they have the virus are flooding hospitals, but this is the first case of a patient presenting flu like symptoms that are compelling enough to test further.

There are now 50 confirmed American cases of swine flu: 28 at a New York City high school, 13 others in California, six in Texas, two in Kansas and one in Ohio. Only one of those has led to a hospitalization.

In New York, the school reporting all the state's flu victims is closed for now. In northern Ohio, a school reporting one student with the disease is closed for the week. Ohio school officials said a cleaning crew has been sanitizing doorknobs, desktops and telephones.

Some schools are also closed in Texas, California and South Carolina.

Elsewhere, there are signs that the public is taking precautions. Pharmacies in Manhattan say paper facemasks have been selling by the box.

In Illinois, students at a Chicago school have been told not to shake hands with anyone. And residents of Guadalupe County, Texas, are being asked to avoid public gatherings and stay home if they feel ill.

They're doing a press conference right now on Channel 6 here in Orlando.....I dunno if anyone has mentioned it before this or not I didn't read any other posts. I just saw the press conference on TV and figured the info had already hit the Disboards.

Maybe if everybody panics the crowds will be back down to 4 & 5's instead of 8 & 9's! I doubt UG considers swine flu in the crowd predictions, though.
We leave tomorrow. :banana:That's exactly what I was thinking!! Maybe I will get Chef Mickey's after all LOL!!

How is this flu different from any other flu?

they say because it is from an animal we dont have the immune to fight it off so if can hit everybody, even the healthly, and there is no vaccine for it as of now. this is a quote from online:

This is a new virus so there's no natural immunity. It has the potential to spread very widely. That's what raises worries about a possible pandemic.

OK, poor guy is taking quite a beating....

Will know in about 48 hrs - right now it's all seasonal flu. Doesn't know how many cases have been sent to CDC for testing from other hospitals.

Let's face it - an airport like MCO, with people flying in/out from all over the world. It's gonna hit Orlando. Be careful, take precautions, and have fun on Space Mountain!!!! :thumbsup2

Good healthy thoughts and vibes to all those going to the world soon. :goodvibes

I just read the cdc website and it shows that tamiflu and another antiviral is effective in treating the cases they've seen. Is there yet another strain out there?

If we're going to talk about a REAL epidemic, why don't we talk about this??
These stats are from 2006, but I'm sure they are probably close to current stats...

In 2006, there were 13,470 fatalities in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver (BAC of .08 or higher) – 32 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year.

16,005 people were killed in the United States in alcohol-related* motor vehicle traffic crashes (BAC of .01 or higher).

In 2006, 1,794 children age 14 and younger were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Of those 1,794 fatalities, 306 (17%) occurred in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Children riding in vehicles with drivers who had a BAC level of .08 or higher accounted for half (153) of these deaths.

The 13,470 alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in 2006 were almost the same as compared to 13,451 alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities reported in 1996. Ten years of progress.

The 13,470 fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes during 2006 represent an average of one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality every 39 minutes.

even if its not confirmed..its still possible this flu will arrive in disney..i mean if 5 states already have it? People from EVERYWHERE visit Florida.

iF not swine flu..someone is bound to pick up somthing like it ...expecially on the plane.

I leave on Friday and i think im pretty prepared and know what to expect but if I have to wear masks and gloves in disney world...well..theres no point to enjoy my vacation.

Im slowly making myself get over this flu thing..ive been waiting for soo long...

to anyone traveling this weekend...have fun. no worries!!:goodvibes

Hmmmm I have not read all the posts in this thread. I will say that when we went to WDW recently my 16 year old got a flu...she was ill the last three days we were there. It was not enough to keep her down...she took meds and still went to the parks. When we got home within two days my 4 year old and I were both ill. Very ill. We both ended up at the doctors and my 4 year old spent Saturday night and half of Easter Sunday in the ER. She coughed so much she ruptured blood vessels in her eyes! They ended up treating her with two different antibiotics simultaneously. She just finished them on Thursday last week and is better now...but whew! I am so glad I wasn't reading about all of this swine flu stuff then!! She was in bed of her own will for 4 days straight...definetly not the norm for an energetic 4 year old! She lost weight too...went from 38 pounds down to 32.4 pounds.

If we were getting ready to head out within the next few days I would be slightly concerned. If all of this doesn't die down and it is an actual epidemic problem...we may be canceling a cruise in June and a Disney trip in Sept :scared1:

Yep, I totally agree. I already had a few little bottles of Purell, will pick up more before we leave on Sat. and will definitely be washing hands more than usual. But come Monday morning, we'll be hitting the Magic Kingdom and loving it - heck, I could cancel the trip, stay home and end up picking it up at the mall or the playground or 100 other places! (we're in NE Ohio, so there have been confirmed case(s?)

Very true ToriPeanut

And I may have been late posting this because they are having a press confrence about this right now. So please don't flame me everybody.:) I am trying to watch on the web but it has no sound. I am taking my 82 grandma there for a birthday trip in 2 weeks. :guilty:

Already a post with 5 or 6 pages on this subject and No cases of Swine Flu has been confirmed in Florida. WFTV had a big MAY HAVE confirmed in front of their story at noon. CDC says none confirmed.

It takes a couple of days for the CDC to confirm any suspected cases. As I understand it, an instant test is done to identify the symptoms as being caused by influenza but samples have to be shipped off to the CDC to confirm the subtype. Some of these reports are likely to turn out to be garden variety flu, and I think it is rather irresponsible of the media to be playing up every flu case with "may have confirmed" swine flu and other alarmist headlines.

I am assuming it is a blood test. The nasal Swab you heard is absolutely nothing. We swab nasal passages to routinely to monitor MRSA.It is a qtip gently swiped slightly in side the nostril. The RN should have explained it better to that pt.

I was watching the news this morning and they showed someone getting tested for Swine Flu and it was done with a nasal swab. The person being tested looked slightly uncomfortable since they went pretty far in to the sinus cavity with the swab.

Because the Media gets higher ratings the longer people tune in and buy all the nonsense. Seriously they beat the economy and recession fears deader than dead. This is the next huge ratings sensationalist crap to get attention and boost ratings.I am not saying there aren't realistic concerns, but simply saying the "Flu is popping up across the nation "doesn't quite have the same ring to it

That's it exactly. Higher consumer confidence numbers came out today, so it seems pretty clear that the economic doom & gloom is losing its impact, and they can only spend so much time talking about the First Lady's arms. It was time to move on to a new panic of the week.

Ok, normally I am not the kind of person who worries about stuff like this, but I leave for WDW Sunday and I am a bit concerned. So I called my sister, she is a nurse and a somewhat of a hypochandriac, I asked her if she would go if she were me and she said yes. She even talked to one of the infectious disease doctors at the hospital and he said his sister is going to Disney in 10 days and he told her to go and have fun. He said to be aware of others around you and more vigilant about hand washing and that he wouldn't cancel his trip if he was going.
