Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

I know that is does sound scary.... I myself get a little worried seeing is I have basically no immune system since I had a kidney transplant 19 years ago.... It is starting to get a little cranky and I don't want anything to go wrong. I am hoping to make it to 20 years...

So from here I am washing my hands vigilantly and using my Purell when needed and trying to avoid sick people ;)

Let's hope we get through this soon....

There are 8.8 million people in Mexico City. I believe 1600 have the swine flu. That is less than 0.018% of the population. So that equates to one person out of every 5,522 people. I don't know if that would be considered an epidemic yet. Yes, it is a concern, but the media is scaremongering again.

Not unless they are doing something else. But we swab every new pts nasal passge for MRSA at admission and 7 days later if they are still in the hospital. It doesn't hurt in the slightest, and I have had pts carry on like that too.

No offense, but the flu swab must be something different than you describe. It does hurt quite a bit and is one of the most unpleasant experiences I've ever had.

My wife and I both got flu symptoms earlier this year, so we went in together. They do go well beyond the nasal opening into the sinuses with the swab. My wife kept backing away and the nurse had to back her into a wall to get her to hold still. When it was my turn I just closed my eyes.

Not fun at all. We had the mild strain of the flu. Tamiflu was prescribed. It was not covered by our rather good BigOil health insurance, so it cost us $250 for the prescriptions.

Before our last trip this past February, I had read stories (on the forum) of people literally wretching every where in Disney World because of a flu that was going around...Needless to say...I was very concerned...Our group of nine went down and met up with another family of seven. One of their teenagers was sick...(for a day) and one of our grandchildren was sick, also for a day. My daughter in law became sick after we arrived home...and another grandchild came down with it...I was so surprised that I didn't get sick right away...as I am diabetic and my immune system isn't so keen.

While people were sick while vacationing in Disney World...they were also getting sick, here in Michigan.

My sister, now is a wreck..(We are going to Disney again in September) and is emailing me constantly about the Swine Flu...being in Orlando...Disney World.....in Michigan...in Ohio...in New York....I think if it becomes an actual epidemic..I'll get it no matter where I am...

I agree...Why can't they close the traffic from Mexico at least for a while, until we figure out how to get this thing under control? :confused3:confused3

There is so much misinformation about viruses and their "life cycle" and how they "infect" it is no wonder people are panicking..

I am not claiming expert status but here is another thread with some info I posted earlier today..

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2159186&page=18

To simplify things viruses are little engines that simply have one thing on their tiny minds and that is to make little copies of themselves ( mutated or not)...

They do this with 2 basic vectors on their little minds....one is to check to see if they can infect you ( ie correct genus and species -a nd in some cases it does not matter - mad cow disease a perfect example)...and the second is to find a way in...

Once both are checked and done and they are in..they start to do their job and make copies of themselves...

The idea of a "vaccine" or immunization shot - if such a thing really exists is to interfere with the process of how these little machines make copies of themselves..

The fact that some of these little characters can mutuate within a generation is the reason we have so much trouble...

And in the case of some of the more nasty ones, like Ebola , a real "vaccine" is very very difficult to make...

Also...one last thing..as I mentioned in the earlier post....considering that it takes oh maybe 24 or so hours to circumnavigate the globe.. and taking into consideration that the average incubation period is 24 - 48 hours and the first "known and verified" case reported was about a week or so ago - we are basically 9 -14 days behind the times...closing borders now will have little effect - sorry...

Yes but the scary part of what is being repaorted in the media (ad nauseum, IMO) of the 1600 "known cases" over 100 people have died - which is a very high mortality rate and that has had me wondering about the relatively mild disease seen in U.S. patients so far. I heard a very good explaination for this on one of the news shows this morning - perhaps many many more people in Mexico actually have (or have had) it and just were not diagnosed. If there are many many more cases, then the mortality rate is actually much much lower. Granted it's only one theory but it makes a lot of sense. And (thankfully) given the quality of health care and overall living conditions for most people in the U.S., makes it a lot less scary too. Probably much more concerning for other countries if it makes its way there.

I am concerned, I won't say I am not. We live in OK, a state sandwiched between two states that have confirmed cases (KS and TX) and we change planes in Dallas when we leave on May 16th. I am not so concerned for myself when out in the open but planes terrify me due to the confined space. On our last flight, two rows in front of us was a woman that hacked for two hours - the whole filght:scared: I felt sorry for her but I tried to keep my face covered by my shirt too :thumbsup2
My real concern is my daughter. She is allergic to everything outside (like plantlife, trees, grass, weeds, etc) but no food allergies. She is a diabetic on insulin and is also allergic to all antibiotics. Her immune system is very poor. I get very concerned when anything like the flu or a bug goes around. She catches everything and what takes someone three days to get over takes her a week to get over. And being diabetic, her sugar stays spiked while she is sick. I know the regular things to do: cover your mouth, cough into your sleeve, wash your hands after touching anything, etc. but does anybody know of anything OTC that you can take to start building her immune system now? Oh, and she is an adult but she does pretty good at listening to me.:)

Florida Hospital in Orlando has suspected cases of swine flu that it has sent to the CDC for further testing, but those cases are not confirmed, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting.

Florida Hospital called a press conference for 12:15 to discuss the reports of a swine flu case there. The hospital is part of the Adventist Health System.

A spokeswoman said the hospital's news release would be posted after the press conference at floridahospitalmedicalnews.com/.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Health said the agency would issue a news release shortly.

The Associated Press quoted the hosptial's CEO saying a swine flu case was in a traveler visiting the Disney resort near Orlando.

"A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit," chief medical officer for Adventist Health System, Loran Hauck told The Associated Press.

Im not shocked since disneyworld is a prime place for this to breed with visitors from all over the world..

We leave Friday and I am not worried. I have Lupus (an auto-immune disease), my sister is pregnant, and we will also be traveling with a 13 month old and a 19 month old. My husband will be the only one without a higher risk :).

But we are good about washing hands and stuff, so we just need to watch our for the kiddos to make sure they don't put a lot in their mouths.

I'd have her drink lots of water, wear a mask on the plane and wipe down the arm rests and tray table. Also, someone posted on here somewhere (or maybe the other swine flu thread) about swabbing the inside of your nose with Neosporin. I believe it was a nurse who suggested this for plane travel. I don't know of anything else she could take but I know it's important to stay well hydrated and get regular, restful sleep to help ward off illness. I'm sorry to her about her diabetes. One of my good friends has a young 5 year old daughter who is diabetic. When she gets sick her sugars are very high too. Hope you have a great trip! :goodvibes

If we're going to talk about a REAL epidemic, why don't we talk about this??
These stats are from 2006, but I'm sure they are probably close to current stats...

In 2006, there were 13,470 fatalities in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver (BAC of .08 or higher) – 32 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year.

16,005 people were killed in the United States in alcohol-related* motor vehicle traffic crashes (BAC of .01 or higher).

In 2006, 1,794 children age 14 and younger were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Of those 1,794 fatalities, 306 (17%) occurred in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Children riding in vehicles with drivers who had a BAC level of .08 or higher accounted for half (153) of these deaths.

The 13,470 alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in 2006 were almost the same as compared to 13,451 alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities reported in 1996. Ten years of progress.

The 13,470 fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes during 2006 represent an average of one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality every 39 minutes.

:thumbsup2 AMEN to that! Now thats a real pandemic!

Reply to CKSDNYT - as far as boosting your immunity - sure - get plenty of rest and or sleep - eat correctly, exercise regularly if you can, the usual stuff that you normally do to stay healthy - maybe get the flu shot (IF you immune system can handle it - check with your doctor!!!) ...do not fall victim the eventual quakery that will fall out from this..I imagine that if this gets worse there will be more snake oil medicines out there then you can think of...

Sure some natural herbs and stuff have some medicinal purposes - but to date not many have been tested and verified fully in double blind tests..and if you take some - they can actually be very very harmful ( think back in the last century- BellaDonna - later called Deadly Nighshade) to your immune system..

And of course in high risk patients if this gets out of control - they will probably get Tamiflu shots first...

I'm a bit concerned because I'm going to WDW on Sunday, but I wouldn't be worrying now if I were going in September. I'd be crazy and locked up if I worried for 4 months. By then we will know much, MUCH more and be able to make a good decision about going. It's the iffy-ness of it all now that has me a tad worried. Will it get worse? Better? Be contained? Be un-containable? By September you'll know all that.

Like a PP said, it's too late, AND American's may be the ones spreading it now. It is believed that we have carried it FROM Mexico TO other parts of the world now...... So what if other countries said the same thing? "Why can't the close the traffic from the US...." We just have no way of containing it at this point....

OT, but they said one of the reasons it really took off in Mexico was because of the humidity...Florida is humid, as we all know.

Actually, it is the opposite. LOW absolute humidity causes flu to spread more rapidly. Google flu humidity.

Add one more to that list. We just lost a beautiful girl (2 days before her 19th birthday) to a stupid drunk driver. Maybe the news should focus a little more on these people.

I never said Flu swab...I said MRSA swab. Our hospital swabs each and every admission for MRSA. If they are swabbing for FLU that is different.I wasn't aware that hospitals are now swabbing everyone for flu.Ours is not.

Actually it seems that Mexico and several other countries are starting to point fingers and say that the USA was the one who took it to Mexico in the first place.

China has even gone so far as to threaten to ban all US pork imports to their country. Which is strange since it is not contracted in that manner. :confused3

I'm so sorry to hear this!! What a horrible and completely preventable tragedy!
