Confirmed New Security measures coming to Disney Parks

Keep in mind that in addition to the security theatre being presented, Disney is very likely doing some real security in the background. Trained observers, behaviorists, profiling, whatever. The point of the theatre is to create a bottleneck so that the real observations can occur more smoothly and with greater accuracy. Anyone except the most highly trained bad guy will appear nervous in some fashion when approaching a checkpoint and would be picked out of a crowd by a profiler.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Disney is protecting their bottom line. The San Bernadino attack proved that small-scale local terror can be a very effective tool to terrorize a populace. Could you imagine what would happen to attendance #'s if some terrorist made it into a Disney park and killed people? (Not trying to dehumanize the horror of the crimes here, but Disney does need to think of their bottom line and their shareholders.)

As has been stated many times here, the terrorists don't need to actually make it into the park. Doing something to the people in line waiting to get through security would work just as well. This would still be every bit an "attack at Disney" as if the attack occurred past the security checkpoints.

Very good point. The least safe place in the airport terminal is in the security line :)

1) I got selected for additional screening, maybe because I was carrying a cane.
2) This "clown" tried to get my attention.
3) I ignored him.
4) He placed a hand upon my shoulder, and I jabbed him, hard, with my cane . . . it has a big, impressive, knob in place of a handle.
5) After grabbing his mid-ribcage, he said he was Security.
6) He looked like a scum-bag, so I asked for his identification.
7) He produced a real Mickey Mouse ID . . . Not a WDW ID, but a real cheap looking ID.
8) I did obey, and held my cane aloft, much like Santa in Miracle on 34th Street did with Mr. Shellhammer.
9) If the "guard" tried to retaliate, he would have been beaned by the cane's knob.
10) I was eventually let go after the search - angry and displeased.
11) The way he searched, I could have been hiding anything except a vest-bomb, and gotten into the park.
Let's say this actually happened; would you really think anything good could come from ignoring security personnel?

1) It did actually happen.
2) And, nope, nothing good or bad came of it.
3) If they wish to address me, they had better do it respectfully, and not lay hands on me or grab me.
4) Sometimes rent-A-Cops get way out of hand.

According to your first post, they did address you and you ignored him.

Well, they did try to get your attention, but you ignored the 'clown'. So, his putting his hand 'on you' isn't hard to understand. Talk about an overreaction.....if you had just done as asked, none of that would have happened. Although you profess to be 'in the know' about how Disney does things, I'm pretty sure you aren't privy to all their security measures. It may all look like theatre to us, but I'm pretty sure that Disney has a clue as to what they're doing. And perhaps people, guests and CMs alike, should just do as asked and then get on with their lives. It's a sad part of today's world. No one likes it or enjoys it.

What on earth??? You were within the security check area. You deliberately ignored the security person when they called out to you. And when he touched you to ensure you didn't try to continue on your merry way, you physically assaulted him??

I might understand this from someone who had never been to a Disney park, or never encountered a security checkpoint before. You fit neither of these categories. As a veteran CM, you know very well that there are security CMs in various uniforms as well as plain clothes. Yet you chose to lash out. I'm surprised you weren't frog marched backstage for a more lengthy conversation with Security. Good thing you were off duty, or your encounter might have resulted in a note on your employee record. At the very least. I hope in the future you keep your big knob to yourself.

Just an FYI. I wouldn't try this same tactic at the airport or you won't be posting to the DisBoards for awhile.

Let me point something out. "Rent a cop" at Disney is now supported by the sheriff dept. I've seen one stationed at the entrance. They are there to support "Rent a cop". Boy did you get lucky. The sheriff upon request has the authority to arrest. If you raise your cane to one of them let's just say your day would be pretty well ruined.

I just left DHS for the last park on my last park day. I was pulled to go through detectors Twice. Once at international gateway and tonight at DHS. Both time they were very up front and nice saying sir can you go through here. I also must say MK had a larger police or sheriff presence than I remember in years past.

There are so many things wrong about this post. 1. You assumed they picked you for additional screening because you had a cane? 2. You called the security officer, a "clown", why is someone who is trying to do their job a "clown"? 3. Perhaps he placed his hand on your shoulder, due to the fact that you ignored him for no reason. What is so different about placing a hand on someone's shoulder, then shaking hands, it's not like he threw you to the ground. I think it's terrible, you injured him as you put it, "he was grabbing his mid-ribcage", were you glad you hurt him? What about him made you pre-judge him as a "scumbag"? When I originally read this, I replied, "IS THIS A JOKE"? That's how inappropriate I thought the post was and to be honest, I thought it was a joke. Rusty, maybe you were having an incredibly bad day, but I think you should look for that guard and apologize to him for your behavior.

You would get that offended if someone tapped you on the shoulder?

I don't like strangers touching me either. Or my kids for that matter. But Rusty's reaction was over the top.

Offend is the wrong word.... It would not offend me, but if I don't know you, please keep your hands to yourself!

I don't particularly like strangers touching me either. BUT....if someone in uniform was speaking to me, and I chose to ignore him/her, I shouldn't be surprised when they put their hand on my arm, shoulder, etc. You never know why they are trying to get your attention...perhaps there is a huge spider on your back...one would assume that you would want to know this in order to remove it...for instance.

Right. Which is why I said Rusty's reaction was over the top.

Going to Disney, or any other theme park is a privilege, not a right. It is also private property, so Disney has the right to do as they choose. I'm not a huge fan of security theatre, or overreactions to perceived threats.

However--Disney is a happy place. I'm there to have fun, to enjoy myself. And to see the enjoyment of my kids. If I were asked to go through metal detectors or submit to extra scrutiny I would just comply. Why escalate a situation and potentially ruin your day and your kids day? <Sarcasm>Wouldn't it be a great family memory to have been arrested at Disney?</Sarcasm> It's best just to accept things and go about your day.

Lol. Exactly.

I think we can all agree that hitting a security guard with a cane is just a bad idea!
