This is my first trip report, so bear with me if I don't do well!

Cast: Me, DH (known as Grumpy from here on out), and DS.

Planning for this trip "officially" began back on May 1, but my mind is always whirring with future plans for Disney trips. So when Grumpy finally gave the go-ahead to get things started, I was already way ahead.

Scheduling is difficult for my family because I am a teacher in a different district than DS. This means that the only school breaks we share are two days at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and summer. Grumpy has to work on the day after Thanksgiving and is too far down on the seniority chain at work to ever get Christmas week or a summer week off. Luckily, Grumpy gets three personal days off and he only works four days a week, so he took all three days and combined them for a six-day vacation. He works overnights and would get off work around 2:30 or 3AM on a Saturday and wouldn't have to be back at work until Friday evening at 4. He checked with his work and could have the days off at the end of July. Finally, a schedule I could work with!

First, we had to choose the resort. I had stayed at many of the resorts over the years and was privately pulling for the Poly. Grumpy, however, had only stayed onsite once and it was the GF. After a lot of research and going over the budget, we decided that a moderate would work best for us. I had stayed at POFQ and loved it, though was thinking that we could try CBR this time. As I was making reservations, I discovered that the exact same reservation at AKL would only cost $200 more for the whole time! Once Grumpy saw the photos, he was convinced. A pool-room (a little more money, but not much more) at AKL was booked. Yahoo! Here we come! :cool1: :cool1:

In the next few days, I signed up for the DISboards (GREAT decision!), bought plane tickets, arranged a car service, and started a packing list. I took every tip to heart and started searching for cheap ponchos at Wal Mart and locating card-holder lanyards online.

Some of my careful research only lead to what I call "Overpaid Frustration Syndrome" or OFS, for short. For example, I had been going to WDW since I was three...and I just assumed that everyone paid "rack rate" for everything. I had no idea what a code was! Of course, by the time I found out, there was no code I could find for our dates and no guarantee I would be able to get the same reservation if I cancelled. Also, about a week after I bought the plane tickets, a Ding! came out that would have saved us over $150 AND we would have left from a closer airport! Grrrr! :headache: Of course, I never shared any of this newfound information with Grumpy... ;)

As the days CRAWLED by, I found myself almost addicted to the DISboards. If I wasn't going over budgets and packing lists in my head, I was reading other people's tips and suggestions online. I made spreadsheets, bought the Unofficial Guide AND TourGuideMike...I was pretty much obsessed. I had a laundry basket in the dining room and any time I bought something to use at WDW, I would throw it in. And I bought LOTS of stuff!

Also from my time on the DIS, I found out about Memories by Sarah. I worked with her to get three caps (I included one for me, too!) filled with goodies all themed with AKL in mind. She was wonderful to work with and had super ideas.

At about 30 days out, we got a call from AKL. Due to my excessive time on the DIS, I knew it was coming and was prepared. The construction on the new DVC Villas was way ahead of schedule and they wanted to move us to
a different resort. I was told that many animals wouldn't be there and the noise could be disturbing. At first, they offered a 1 BR at SSR. I knew they were making some other deals, so I made sure to tell the CM that Grumpy had his heart set on AKL and I had already purchased themed baskets and everything. Without missing a beat, the CM offered the 1 BR at SSR and $946 back. Even though I probably could have had a room at the Poly, I didn't want to press my luck. I jumped at the offer and switched my ticker.

By the way, this call alleviated my OFS a bit because it seems they gave us a 40% off code rate with that offer.

When we were finally in the last few days, I was getting stressed. Somehow, I managed to pull a muscle in my neck and had to finish a master's-level course for school and pack while on muscle-relaxers (I bet my homework got some laughs!).

Even though I knew we had laundry machines in our villa, I decided to pack enough for each of us to change twice every day. Grumpy sweats a LOT and prefers to wear a t-shirt under all of his shirts, so I needed to pack 4x the number of shirts for him (or so I thought! ). Bought a new set of luggage, but it wasn't big enough...so I bought an even bigger set.

I started packing two days before we left with the 2.5 gallon bags (another tip from the DIS) and they worked GREAT -- but air would seep in over time and things I had packed no longer fit. I packed and repacked and packed again, and just COULDN'T make everything fit. On the night before, I called Grumpy at work and he suggested another suitcase (bringing the total to five PLUS golf clubs for a 6-day trip!). Got it out and now had plenty of room! Yippee! Maybe I could fit in more stuff... :rotfl:

On that same call to Grumpy, he told me that his boss messed up and scheduled him for a 12-hour shift that night. This was BAAAAAAAAAAAD news because he started work at 4PM. If you add in the mandatory break for lunch, he wouldn't be off work until 4:30AM...but the car service was picking us up at 4:15!! Our flight was at 6:30 and we live almost an hour from the airport. We really couldn't push that window much more without the possibility of missing the flight.

Did he make the flight? Wait until the next installment...

I knew I had it bad when my living room was filled with clothes and half-packed suitcases (plus all of the items weeded out because they didn't fit into the luggage) and *I* was sitting down "taking a break" from packing by being on the DIS! :lmao: I am such a crazy woman!

I finally finished the packing at 11PM. I checked in at the airline online, set my alarm for 3:30, and called Grumpy one last time. He was working like a fiend to get off early and skipped his lunch so he could make it on time. Still, we worked out a plan in case he would be late. I printed out his boarding pass and a list of later flights in case he had to drive himself to the airport. I was going to leave him a suitcase and a carryon because DS and I had too much.

Some of you may wonder why I wouldn't wait for him and just take a later flight with him. My answer to that would be :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: !!

Went to bed, but I couldn't sleep a wink. I was too worried that Grumpy wouldn't get home in time, that the car service wouldn't show up on time, that I had forgotten to pack something (even though our house was practically stripped BARE -- there was almost nothing left TO pack!), that some crutial detail had been overlooked. Oh yeah, and I was a tad excited. ;)

I finally gave up the sleeping charade around 2:30 AM. Got up to take a shower and get ready for the day, and I ran into Grumpy in the hallway!!! HE MADE IT HOME!! Whoo-hoo! He managed to cut some time out and was tiptoeing upstairs because he didn't want to wake me. I was so happy, I was singing in the shower.

The car came 20 minutes early (luckily we were ready) and we were off! DS was sort of sleepy on the ride to the airport, but Grumpy and I were wide awake.

The plane ride was smooth and we actually landed 1/2 and hour early. Got right on an ME bus and got to our resort by 10AM. I intentionally didn't make a request for a specific location because I knew Grumpy would need sleep and I wanted to get the first room available. And luck of luck! A room was open in the Paddock! Away we went!

After a loooooooooong trek to our room, Grumpy went straight to bed. I wanted to find out the status of our grocery delivery and gift baskets. DS wanted to go to DTD right away, but I had packed his hat in our checked luggage because I figured the gift hats would be waiting for us. After a couple of hours, three phone calls, and one trip back to the lobby, our gift baskets and our groceries were located. We also had all of our luggage by noon.

I unpacked the groceries and cursed myself for not bringing a copy of what I had ordered. Some things I could have SWORN I ordered weren't there. Oh well, I was unbelievably tired and maybe I had made a mistake. After unpacking the luggage, I talked DS into taking a short nap and we would go out in a few hours. Good kid...I would have pitched a fit if I were him!

As I crawled into bed, Grumpy woke up. Very un-Grumpy-like, too! He was rested and refreshed and raring to go! He wanted to talk to me about DVC, which he was STEADFAST against up until now. All of a sudden, he wanted to buy in. Right now! Today!!

We were originally supposed to go to TL that night, but I suggested we hit DTD for a snack and some shopping and then we head over to AKL to check out the model and take a tour. While we were there, we could eat at Boma and turn in early. All agreed and away we went.

The bus for DTD came as soon as we were walking up to the bus stop and we were shopping within about 10 minutes. We made a few purchases (including a PAL Mickey) and started toward the buses to go to AKL. We happened to pass a DVC kiosk (how could you NOT?! Those things are EVERYWHERE!!) and I thought we might be able to get a ride over to AKL to eat and take the tour. A small miscalculation of mine got us back at SSR (where the AKL models are) and in a full-blown tour. DS was dropped off at the kid's play area and admonished not to eat too much because it will ruin his dinner. This was at 4PM.

Four hours and over $16 grand later, we were FINALLY on our way to Boma. The DVC CMs called Boma and told us there would only be about a 10 minute wait. Another miscalculation...and we were seated at 9:45. Tired and starving, we didn't enjoy the meal very much. Caught a cab because we didn't want to bother switching buses. Cab dropped us off at the wrong building, but we found our way anyway. DS didn't have any blankets for the pull-out couch, so we called housekeeping. Bell services also brought the groceries they had forgotten to deliver earlier (I KNEW I ordered more!).
We washed up and were all asleep within 20 minutes. What a first day!

I am loving your trip report! I am just like you and always overpack. Can't wait to read more!

Great trip report! I, too, can't wait for more. Exhausting first day - wow!! You'll LOVE DVC though! We have a tendency to overpack too and then I really regret it :sad1:, I'm trying to reform!

Thanks for all of the encouragement!

The next day we were up early. We had skipped our counter-service meal the previous day, so I figured we could go to the Artist's Palette for breakfast. I also had some older passes I wanted to upgrade at the concierge, so I hit the lobby while the family went for breakfast.

At the concierge, I wanted to upgrade two passes from 2005 to include the WFaM options. I had called Disney about two weeks prior and was told it would cost $53 to upgrade each ticket. DS and I each had eight days left on Park Hoppers with no expiration. Each of us had seven-day park hoppers with our package, but I planned to save those in favor of using five of our eight remaining days. But because we wanted to go to DQ, I wanted to upgrade the older passes.

The CM at the concierge desk was polite, but resolute: no upgrades possible after 14 days. What?! :confused3 I explained that I had called and was told that I could. He explained that there must be a miscommunication because it cannot be done, and then asked for the name of the CM I spoke to so he can be retrained. I told him that I was shocked; in all of my experience with Disney, I had never before been disappointed with their service. I told him that this changes our whole plans and we would have gone to a park yesterday, since we were going to burn two whole days from our passes anyway. He then offered to upgrade our passes to non-expiration for free! Faith restored! He spent a few minutes typing into the computer and passed a sheet of paper across the counter to me. On it, he also upgraded Grumpy's tickets too! I almost kissed him. The total dollar value of the ten minute conversation was nearly $300...but the overall outcome for me confirmed the magic of Disney. I am going to write a letter to management about how wonderful the CM was.

Because I had spent so much time in the lobby, Grumpy and DS were finished with breakfast and were ready to start the day. I jumped on a bus with them and wondered why it seemed to be so difficult for me to get food at WDW! It seemed to be everywhere, yet always just out of my reach!

We arrived at Animal Kingdom a few minutes after rope drop, and DS was off and RUNNING with our tickets to grab EE fastpasses. We also had some special VIP fastpasses that we snagged for the DVC tour (AWESOME things! Get some if you can!). We rode every major attraction and saw Festival of the Lion King (one of my absolute favorites) by 1:00. Grumpy and DS had reservations for golf and it was getting pretty steamy in the park, so we left.

The bus came right as we were walking up to the stop (beginning to see a pattern here?) and we got back to the resort with plenty of time for Grumpy and DS to make their tee time. After they left, I took a leisurely shower and a long nap.

When Grumpy and DS came back from golf (DS got to drive the cart!!), we all packed up and went to DisneyQuest. Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!!! :cloud9: We could have spent all day there, and we still didn't get to do half of their activities. We ate a counter-service meal and played until almost closing. As we were leaving, Grumpy gave us a brief scare when we thought he had lost his lanyard that held his tickets, credit card, and ID. Luckily, it wasn't lost (it was around his neck the whole time!) and we were able to head out in a pleasantly good mood. We were back at the resort and in bed by 11:30. End of day 2, whew!

Wow, congradulations on becoming DVC members. Are you allowed to rent out your points, just wondering?

I love WDW golf policy to do ride alongs when golfing. I am an avid golfer, but I couldn't golf when we were there in April. They let me ride along with my dh, and putt a little. In WI, that is totally unheard of. If I want to ride along, I have to pay full price.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your TR.

Enjoying it so far. Keep up the good work. I'm going with my sis in September. So excited. I love reading all the trip reports before we go. Especially the good ones....:thumbsup2

Thanks to all who are reading my report. Even Grumpy tells me he can't wait to read the next chapter!

OhMari - I don't know if we can rent out our points, but I don't see why not! I also didn't know about the ride-along policy for golf at WDW. Good for you!

We woke up early on Monday and had a quick breakfast in the room. We learned a LOT from taking a huge backpack to AK (trust me, I over-pack at every possible opportunity!) and pared down our gear quite a bit. I still brought PAL Mickey, though he didn't seem to be working very well. He would giggle and wiggle a lot, but he didn't give us any of the cool facts he was supposed to. :confused3 So, off we went to Epcot!

We arrived about 1/2 an hour before rope drop and used that time to apply liberal amounts of sunscreen. They let us through the turnstiles at about 8:50 and we all filed in and lined up at the rope stretched out in front of the big fountain in Future World. Grumpy was going to run to get fastpasses for Test Track while DS and I sauntered to get in line for MissionSpace. Just as we got to the front of the line, Grumpy caught up to us with the fastpasses. We literally walked on MS and played the games afterward. We sent goofy emails to our friends and got to command the Orion against another family commanding the Triton in the space race game. We won!

By the time we were done at MS, fastpasses were ready for Test Track. Hopped in the fastpass line and went through the pre-show to the loading area. Unfortunately, it was taking a LONG time to load. An overhead announcement stated that there was a small problem and that loading is currently suspended, but they would resume the ride soon. Forty minutes later, they started the ride again. Yaaaaay! They loaded four cars, and then announced that the attraction had to be shut down. :headache: They gave us more fastpasses to use within the next day and we had to climb out of the loading area.

I didn't really mind. I don't think I want to go on a ride that breaks down twice within an hour. :thumbsup2

After the TT fiasco, we were off to Soarin'. The standby line was 80 minutes and the fastpass return was hours away, so we tried our VIP fastpasses again. TA-DAH! Immediate fastpasses! Those things were so cool! :cool1:
We also got regular fastpasses in case we wanted to ride later.

After Soarin' (which Grumpy didn't really like), we wanted to grab some lunch. DS and I love Restaurant Marrakesh, but that doesn't really do much for Grumpy. We were going to eat counter-service in the Land (we were there anyway), but the menu didn't seem very exciting. We decided to walk over to the Nine Dragons in China. By the time we walked there, however, we remembered that none of us had ever eaten in Germany. They had both counter-service and table-service, so we wanted to check it out.

The counter-service was mostly brats and hotdogs, so we decided to spring for a table service at the Biergarten. We got there at opening, and it was a big buffet. This turned out to be one of our best meals the whole week! We all loved it and ate way more than we should have. If you haven't been, give it a try -- it was terrific!

Grumpy was getting grumpy and it was getting really stinking hot again, so we decided to go back to the room for a nap. We grabbed more Test Track fastpasses on the way out, and walked up to the bus stop just as our bus was arriving.

After napping and freshening up, we called a cab to take us to the Hoop-De-Doo revue, something only Grumpy had done in the past. We had a lot of fun, though our waitress wasn't very attentive. We were suckers and bought the photos, too.

We hopped on a ferry after dinner and caught the Electrical Water Parade on our way over to the Magic Kingdom. We arrived just in time for Wishes and grabbed a spot for the Spectromagic parade. The evening was relatively cool and there was a nice breeze. Everything was perfect...well, almost everything.

When we were leaving MK, I directed the family to the monorail to go back to the TTC. In my defense, there WAS a sign that said that was the way to resort buses! Well, 20 minutes later, we realized we (ahem, *I*) made a mistake. Tired and achy, we grabbed a cab back to the room. It was late, but we made it back in one piece.

HI! I'm subbing for sure! I am very much enjoying your TR! I love the food at Biergarten!!! Yummy stuff! Looking fwd to more!

Big congrats on buying into DVC....how lucky you guys are.

Great report so far..any pics!

Great report! Thanks for taking the time to share! It sounds like it was "hotter than the blazes" while you were there!
:flower3:

Great trip report! Thanks for sharing!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a "VIP" fastpass and how do you get it?
