Confessions of a reluctant runner, a DL 1/2 & PHM PTR. 7/5 race recaps and final thoughts

Great for making lemonade out of lemons. UGH on the ankle issues. Hope you get all straightened out soon.

Well what are you going to do, have to roll with it as best you can.

I figure I can call it a tempo run from a training perspective :rotfl:

Great job to the boys as well.

really proud of Eric!

and grateful Jeff's calf held out or I'd never hear the end of it

Good thing you can return and exchange the shoes. I know it is a pain but great that you have that option.

It is a pain. In every way possible. It is great that the option exists, definitely. I'd be in a world of trouble without it. Then again, I wouldn't have tried the Newton's in the first place.

Sorry about the ankle. Hope the brace helps.

I'm not convinced it does, really don't want to wear them today as they are quite difficult to get into "street" shoes but I suppose I have to if I want to try on the next pair of running shoes with them on.

Well done to you and the boys on the latest race. Despite your running issues with the ankle, I'm in total admiration.

Thanks. From a training perspective it mildly freaks me out as I'd like to be at longer runs on the weekends from here out but technically I do still have time and running that distance isn't the actual issue.

YAY on getting the wait list for the room, and all the team things sorted out. It sounds like a bunch of fun!

SO happy about the room!!!

Thanks for all that info. I never even thought about the logistics of organizing a race and incorporting the drink and potty stops.

Yesterday's race had zero water on the course which really isn't cool for a 10K in my book. Not enough potties either for the size of the race.

They had a special on the Disney medals, I think on the DME, and that was really cool.

I remember seeing that on the bus!

Whenever I see someone out running in less than optimal weather I am impressed with their dedication.

Or desperation :rotfl: once it's your routine though, you generally don't htink about it that much.

I'm sorry about your ankles :( what a pain in the rear. Any time line on when they'll be back to normal?

Absolutely no way to know

:worried:

Great they were able to change you to a 5K instead of a DNF! Wise move to change and not risk greater injury.

I'm not sure I'd have thought of it if a co worker hadn't told me he just did the same thing.

Of course in his case he was registered for a 50K, and "just" did the marathon (which is a little over 42K) so cut out about 4 miles.

:rotfl2:

Can't really compare my swap down to 3.1 miles to that.

Congrats to Eric! What an awesome accomplishment for him!!!!

Very proud of him

Yuck... sorry about the ankle problems. It is too bad that you didn't get to complete the full 10K you intended to run, but better to be safe than sorry. You did the right thing. Better to take it easy than to cause more damage!

Hopefully you can finally find some shoes that will work for you and between the shoes and braces the ankles will heal...

Cynthia, I am trying to catch up as best I can.

I'm sorry to hear about your ankles.

Glad you had a good date with Ann and that your room came through.

And how fun that you, Maryellen and Ann are running as a team.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all of your family.

Those are great results. For your ankles acting like crap, you certainly did a great time. I haven't run that fast in years.

Hopefully after your PT and rest period you will come back stronger than ever! :thumbsup2

It was definitely the right call to cut it short. Doing what little I did do, may well have done some damage

Hopefully you can finally find some shoes that will work for you and between the shoes and braces the ankles will heal...

Thanks, it is definitely still a work in progress

:confused3

I'm sorry :(

I thought I was reading this wrong at first! :rotfl: Oh my goodness!!!

Seriously. a 50 K. He is CRAZY!

Cynthia, I am trying to catch up as best I can.

I'm sorry to hear about your ankles.

You are doing better than I am in the catching up department!

Glad you had a good date with Ann and that your room came through.

I am SOOOOO happy about the room, now if it could just be ready early.....we just got a flight update and we now land at 4:40 am!

Some how 5:15 am seemed a bit better. :lmao:

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all of your family.

thank you Kathy! I hope yours was wonderful

Those are great results. For your ankles acting like crap, you certainly did a great time. I haven't run that fast in years.

Well it was a 5K, definitely easier to fun faster for a short period. The ankles were definitely crap and well, the braces were NOT a good thing to run in. It was such a weird race, I have never felt like I was being passed like I did at this race, and yet my time was ok as was my placement. At the time though I was thinking either my watch was wrong or I was reading it wrong. LOL. I don't get it. Last week was pretty rough and depressing for sure.

Hopefully after your PT and rest period you will come back stronger than ever! :thumbsup2

We shall see. While they aren't better from a pain perspective, from a mobility there is some improvement so I've been cleared for a little test. we shall see! I do want to run that 5K on Sunday. I'll have an update on developments shortly.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Enjoy your families, every day is a gift!

Happy thanksgiving to you Tammie! I hope it was wonderful.

A little training and trip update.

After the race last Sunday, my ankles definitely hurt. And, sadly, the hurt didn't get any better. On Tuesday I had a chiro appointment for my neck and ankles anyway. I did some additional research on Monday night and went into the appointment expecting they might send me to PT.

They did.

PT did NOT like what they saw. Apparently not only are my ankles kind of frozen and locked up, but my hips and shins are as well and worse, one of my arches is starting to collapse. They think a few things. They think that it is very probable that the ankle issue is really just the latest symptom in what may all be linked together, starting back with the callus/blister issues and moving into the shins. While they don't think the shoes necessarily caused the issues, they didn't help either and frankly they weren't crazy about the ones I was wearing before this last round (like for the full past year, sigh). They did think running in the braces was a spectacularly bad idea and were shocked that the podiatrist suggested it at all. The braces I have are a sports brace, but for lateral movement like soccer, not straight forward like running. They did think the braces caused problems and made things significantly worse. After a series of extremely depressing "tests" and exercises where it became blatant how messed up I was they gave me some news I really had hoped not to hear.

No running.

For at least a week.

The PT could tell that didn't sit well and asked if that was ok. I think I only had a two word response.

How long?

To which she couldn't promise a timeline but did say at least one week and then they’d re-evaluate. As a runner herself it’s the last thing she wants to take away and really tries to avoid it. She actually felt that if I even tried, I wouldn't be able to. I was given exercises to do at home and told I could do the elliptical or the bike at the gym.

Joy.

Not.

LOL!

I'll be honest. I almost completely lost it there. It wasn't just the no running decree. It wasn't just visibly seeing how limited I was. It wasn't just the fact that the ankles did still hurt. It was the very real baggage I have when it comes to PT for things that are "broken". I've put in the time over years trying to get things back to "normal" with little success. I have been able to get things to a manageable level but never back to "normal". That's meant giving things up like pilates and cycling. The idea of losing running too was almost more than I could bear in that moment. To be fair, it was with different PT folks for the most part but that didn't lessen the sinking feeling an iota.

I felt bad about my reaction today. I didn't think I said that much at the time but it must have been clearly visible as my poor PT went in to my Chiro after I'd left and apparently felt awful and thought I hated her.
Which of course I don't. I trust her and think I am at the right place with the right people, it was just upsetting, depressing and wow did it make me feel old.

Even though running was off the table I did head out and exchange my shoes yet again. I'm holding off on pictures of them, maybe it’s bad luck! The funny part about the new shoes is they are one of the runDisney models, one I actually tried on while we were down there for the half. At the time I didn't buy them as I didn't see the point in buying a cute sneaker that I wouldn't actually run in. I don't wear tennis shoes for anything other than the gym or running (or hiking but rarely for that). My PT liked them MUCH better than what I had prior and better than what I ran in all last year. Not that she loved them, but did think they were ok. She’s a bit concerned they are too narrow for the orthotics but I won't know till I actually run in them. I did wear them on the elliptical twice last week. PT had suggested I do intervals to make it more interesting and challenging, so I did. I'd forgotten something about the elliptical.

My toes go numb about 20 minutes in! Annoying. I also forgot just how HOT it gets at the gym doing cardio. YUCK! I need to bring a towel. I did do my exercises all weekend and today when I went in, while I am stiff and sore (and likely some from the elliptical, some from the exercises) there was some improvement. Not huge but it is better. The ART felt like it made some more progress as a result. Both the Chiro and PT really hope that once they get everything unlocked and moving again I will be ok and a little thing like a shoe or a hill won't throw me off. So...I get to test it out tonight or tomorrow. I have been cleared to run on the treadmill (YUCK!!!!!) doing 1:1 intervals. 1 minute run, 1 minute walk.

I hate that kind of interval

I hate the treadmill

DREADMILL

But...she will let me do up to 30 minutes so I am going to suck it up and go for it. What we want to see if is the pain gets worse, or if it just stays constant. Obviously if it gets worse I am supposed to stop. It will also let me test the shoes in more of a running fashion which will be good. I've also added, per her recommendation, something called a toe separator. Which is exactly what it sounds like. Super weird to wear but not uncomfortable and if it helps my alignment and possibly the bunion/callus/blister issues I am all for it. The Chiro wants me to consider some joint therapy supplements (glucosamine, fish oil etc) which…yeah, makes me feel old. We will see, I may pick some up on Weds. Historically fish oil/flax etc hasn't done squat for me.

In other weekend news I had my family over on Thanksgiving and it was lovely. We then met Allison and Fran for lunch on Friday, a VERY wet and soggy and cold Friday. We did at least eat near the water at a classic Seattle “joint” and had a lovely lovely time hanging out with them. Saturday was spent decorating the house and then Jeff and I spent the night downtown celebrating our anniversary which was just lovely. I suppose it was a good thing I couldn't run Sunday because well, I had to recover a little from Saturday! I did a little bit of cyber shopping, the only stores I hit all weekend were Home Depot (for lights) and Office Max so basically escaped any craziness. I did get some gifts done but most importantly, got ALL of my PHM costume ordered.

:cool1::cool1::cool1:

On Friday I got an email with a discount code for my favorite workout wear store, so broke down and ordered the bottoms I want to wear for the race. I wanted them anyway but given they are a basic black, they never go on sale. 20% is 20%! I'd ordered one piece about a week prior and then ordered all the remaining items today. There was a small gift with purchase today only so I figured why not. The reality is I want the stuff here early as there will be some "assembly" and things getting added to the base pieces so I need time to play with them and figure out how it is going to work.
In far less exciting news, the 2nd leg of our flight down had a time change. The good news is less of a layover (still 1 hr 45min).Bad news is we now land at 4:40 am. Holy cats. I am used to powering through with an early arrival. That though is SO early I can only pray we have a room ready early. It's about 30 minutes earlier than the original flight and something about it being prior to 5 am makes it UGH! UGH AND UGH!
Probably the fact that once we even get to the hotel, breakfast locations will not be even be open yet! Most don't open until 7:30, I only found one spot even open at 7. We could have 2 hours to kill before having anywhere other than the Boardwalk lobby to hang out in. The MCO Starbucks will not even be open

GAH!

:sad2:

Wonder if anyone will notice if we just pass out up in the Belle Vue Lounge. That at least sounds better than the main lobby.

Check out the bling! It will be worth being tired

I am loving the snowflake/frozen detail on the half medal. :thumbsup2 I really hope the shirt is that color with those snowflakes on it!!! As long as it isn't the light pink.

I look like I died in that color.

Man when you get locked up you do it right. I am so sorry your body is rebelling against you. I am hoping you get everything unlocked and loose enough to stay that way.

That flight sounds painful. Had a 2 hour layover in Atlanta on the way home from LA and I took a nap in the airport, had to. :lmao:

You might be okay in the Belle Vue but remember they serve breakfast so not sure when they start setting up.
Walk over to Beach Club and nap in the solarium?
Doesn't one place in either the Swan or Dolphin serve 24 hrs?
:surfweb:
Picabu in the Dolphin. They serve breakfast at 6 am. That could be an option. ?

Cynthia, even though I knew already about the PT and everything, that just stinks. I completely understand why you would be feeling upset like you were. I think it's just the concept of potentially being de-railed from a goal.

You're right about the dread mill. And intervals. Although I would rather interval on the treadmill, because running at a continuous pace just seems like it's NEVER ENDING!

OMG. I have to order my costume! :scared1:

I'm so excited about the medals! And possibly kicking myself for not signing up for the Glass Slipper Challenge. Oh well. I'll have two medals out of four. :lmao: And my sanity.

That's awful news about the ankles/shins etc. Sorry you aren't able to run right now. I hope it gets better soon.

It was so nice meeting you and your family for lunch on Friday. Great company, and the boys behaved really well for how long we had "adult time". The food was really good too!

After spending time near your city, I really have to applaud you for your diligence. If I lived in a place with weather like you have, I'd probably never go outside after October 1st!

Hang in there! You are going to find the right combo of shoes and stretching and everything will come together!

I actually like the one minute walk, one minute run on the treadmill. You have to pay attention, so you don't really get bored. Plus if your ankles hold out you can increase your run speed every interval. For me its kind of fun. And its just short term.

Don't worry about getting upset. PT and sports medicine people know how runners are. I am sure no one took any serious offense.

I am struggling with some overuse issues myself. I ran 70 miles in November and I am actually getting slower. My long run this weekend was a struggle. I ran 11 minute miles because my legs just felt dead. Several times I just had to stop and walk because my legs literally ached. It just reaffirms what I already knew from my previous experiences with long distance running. There is nothing easy about it. I miss riding my bike. Wah!

I ordered my pants to wear under my skirt. OMG. They are almost too tight. I still have to order the rest of everything, but I've just spent so much $ on internet Christmas shopping. And every time I internet shop I shop for myself too! :rotfl2:

So sorry about the ankles/shins and the no running. I hope you get it all sorted out. :grouphug:

Glad you had a great thanksgiving. How cool to DisMeet with Alison!

Man when you get locked up you do it right. I am so sorry your body is rebelling against you. I am hoping you get everything unlocked and loose enough to stay that way.

I guess huh. I run tight always, that's not new. I didn't realize that extended to my ankles and heels though!

That flight sounds painful. Had a 2 hour layover in Atlanta on the way home from LA and I took a nap in the airport, had to. :lmao:

They layover won't be an issue at all, that's only from 7-9:30 or something like that. It's the arrival time that will kill us. Pray for our room to be ready early.

You might be okay in the Belle Vue but remember they serve breakfast so not sure when they start setting up.
Walk over to Beach Club and nap in the solarium?
Doesn't one place in either the Swan or Dolphin serve 24 hrs?

Picabu in the Dolphin. They serve breakfast at 6 am. That could be an option. ?

We may not be hungry at 6am lol. UGH! Solarium is not a bad idea. I am not sure how early Belle Vue opens but it does seem like at least it would be a bit more quiet and a lot more cozy than the main lobby if we don't feel like leaving the hotel right away.

The expo opens at 10 so I suppose we could do that right away after we eat wherever we eat though I don't know that either of us were planning on hitting it at "rope drop" as the crowds can be ugly. But it would get it out of the way and then I think we may go back over with Mary Ellen once she gets in. Originally we were thinking we'd go later in the day as we'd planned to eat over at Boatwrights and that'd be easy to just head there after the expo. I have a feeling we will be eating early there though. We aren't making a ressie to give us flexibility. I think we will just play it all by ear but UGH that's early.

Cynthia, even though I knew already about the PT and everything, that just stinks. I completely understand why you would be feeling upset like you were. I think it's just the concept of potentially being de-railed from a goal.

It's a bit bigger than the goal. The concept of being derailed from doing PHM is upsetting enough but the long term idea of being derailed is pretty devastating to even contemplate. Trying really hard not to go there.

You're right about the dread mill. And intervals. Although I would rather interval on the treadmill, because running at a continuous pace just seems like it's NEVER ENDING!

I think I have seriously done the treadmill maybe 3 times, ever? maybe 4? And truth be told haven't stuck with it for a full workout. Last time (only time) I really tried for any length of time I felt like it gave me shin splints. Not only am I worried about that, and convinced I'll fall off, having to adjust the speed every minute and watch the clock like that? UGH!

OMG. I have to order my costume! :scared1:

I cannot wait to see what you are doing! Are you telling ahead of time?

We are all going to have so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited about the medals! And possibly kicking myself for not signing up for the Glass Slipper Challenge. Oh well. I'll have two medals out of four. :lmao: And my sanity.

That is one more than I will have! I can't get past 2 things on GSC. One is the cost and two is the idea of having to take it easy on one to do ok on the other. That would be hard. If I was doing it with friends or family though I could do it but I think I'd have to actually run with someone on the 10K part to be ok with it.

That's awful news about the ankles/shins etc. Sorry you aren't able to run right now. I hope it gets better soon.

Thanks, me too!

It was so nice meeting you and your family for lunch on Friday. Great company, and the boys behaved really well for how long we had "adult time". The food was really good too!

They did do pretty well, it was a nice long lunch and I'm so happy you liked the food. It's a Seattle institution and well, it couldn't have felt more Seattle like between the food, the rain and the ferry dock!

After spending time near your city, I really have to applaud you for your diligence. If I lived in a place with weather like you have, I'd probably never go outside after October 1st!

LOL! This is a bit on the cold side for us. It does get this cold, just not usually for long. Usually the lows are more in the mid 30's but there is something about December where we get 1 or 2 weeks of that amazing clear gorgeous sunny but 20 degree weather. Snow is pretty much what you saw, a silly dusting that people freak out over and then it's gone. The black ice is what you really have to watch out for. What kind of shoes did you have to buy? I hope you had a good time down in the market, it was such a pretty day to be down there. We walked down for coffee and a croissant (and a pass through Sur la Table lol) before heading home and I thought of you guys.

Hang in there! You are going to find the right combo of shoes and stretching and everything will come together!

I hope so! I didn't like that the PT thought the latest ones might be too narrow. Sadly my go to Asics in the neutrals just don't seem to feel right every time I try them on. I did try a Zoot Solana and may go for that if these don't work. Sigh.

I actually like the one minute walk, one minute run on the treadmill. You have to pay attention, so you don't really get bored. Plus if your ankles hold out you can increase your run speed every interval. For me its kind of fun. And its just short term.

Well you are pro at the treadmill, me, I am scared of it! The concept of adjusting the time that often sounds like work. A minute is so short, that seems like a lot of starting and stopping.

Don't worry about getting upset. PT and sports medicine people know how runners are. I am sure no one took any serious offense.

I don't think Brit was offended, she just felt bad. And I feel bad that I made her feel bad!

Wah!

Dude, that's a LOT of miles. I have been worried you've been overdoing it. That is as many miles as I ran in August right before my half and including the half! You did that right after your huge bike ride. Other than that month I'm always much more in the 40-60 range. Nothing wrong with 11 minute miles, Galloway says that the long run can't be too slow. I really took that to heart with my training this past summer and it helped. I definitely had some longer runs at that pace and it could happen again for sure.

I am trying not to freak out, I've not run farther than 7.35 miles since the half. Which is what my plan calls for but still. I guess the good news is that I can fall back on the galloway basic plan if mine ends up being too aggressive. The interesting thing is the one I am doing is actually quite a few less miles on the long runs (more during the week but still less overvall) but it is supposed to be consistently faster and I am worried about my ability to try that given the developments.

I ordered my pants to wear under my skirt. OMG. They are almost too tight. I still have to order the rest of everything, but I've just spent so much $ on internet Christmas shopping. And every time I internet shop I shop for myself too! :rotfl2:

Did you get compression pants? I can't wear those, or compression shorts. I do like the look of the shorts with the skirt better but know I'd be supremely uncomfortable. I went with my standard knicker but in black as they have the amazing pockets and are not compression! I can send you the link if you are interested.

On the too tight...UGH. Between basically being off all of Sept, batting the ankles lately and work travel, holiday and vacation eating...I've put on any weight I lost in the last 2 years. I think I'll be able to take it back off between now and the PHM but right now I feel rather beached whale like!

So sorry about the ankles/shins and the no running. I hope you get it all sorted out. :grouphug:

Thanks, me too!

Glad you had a great thanksgiving. How cool to DisMeet with Alison!

We had so much fun with Alison and Fran, it was just a lovely lunch (despite the weather).

I'm sorry about your ankles :( and ugh about the braces causing more harm :(

At least they gave you some options, I know you don't like the treadmill or bike but at least they didn't order no activity. One of my coworkers, a runner, tore one of her glute muscles and had to basically do nothing for a few months. She was miserable.

And that is a mighty early arrival time! :scared:

Ugh! I'm so sorry to hear about the ankle/foot issues. That sounds horrible, and I can certainly understand the fear over having yet another activity you love taken away.

But.

We're not at that point yet. So take it slow, and hopefully the doctors/PT's will have good answers and treatments for you. I hope you come back strong.

And how cool you were able to meet up with Alison and Fran! :thumbsup2

I'm sorry about your ankles :( and ugh about the braces causing more harm :(

Yeah, that's super frustrating. Basically I have one side telling me to immobilize it and another saying that's the whole problem, it's locked up and needs to move. My gut says joints moving is better than frozen up.

Doing nothing for a couple of months would be awful. Not thrilled about 4:40 am arrival time for sure.

Well, "love" is a very strong word. I wouldn't go that far. I can't honestly say I love running. There are moments when I love it, moments I hate it and most moments I tolerate it reasonably well as a chore I need to do. And a race as all three of those at once lol! I do love being able to do something that keeps me fit and healthy and potentially losing another option is scary.

We had such a great time with Alison and Fran, it was just really nice to chat and catch up!

Yuck. I'm sorry to hear about your latest news. I guess you just have to go with what the PT tells you to do and hope for the best. The worst part is that you put all that effort into finding shoes that work for you, and then you follow what should have been good advice about using the braces, only to find out you're causing more harm. :headache:

I hope the new shoes work for you and the PT gets things straightened out quickly!

Aw man, that really stinks about not being able to run (although i'm a treadmill girl, scared to run outside!) Hopefully everything heals quickly for your race in a couple months!

Yay for meet ups outside of Disney! :cool1:

The medals are awesome!

Cynthia, I'm sorry to hear all of your woes with your running. I hope things improve quickly for you.

I'm glad you had a wonderful holiday and anniversary.
