Ok, I need to know what Confectioners Sugar is.............how do you use it??

Do you use it for iciing or in cooking in general?

My DS is doing a Home Economics assignment where in he needs to make 2 diff types of confectionery using two diff methods & I have found a recipe off the net for him, but it calls for this confectioners sugar & we don't know what that is.

We most likely have it, but it would come under a diff name.

So, can someone tell me what this is please?

powdered sugar. that's all it is, plain and simple. And if a recipe calls for confectioners sugar don't ever try using regular sugar in it's place. Especially in cream cheese frosting, it turns out like bubble gum with sand in it :p

Ok, that's what I thought too, but I wasn't sure.

ok, so would you use this stuff for icing then?

Here in the US confectioner's sugar is also known as powdered sugar. It is very fine sugar mixed with a little bit of cornstarch (making it look white and powdery) and is used in baking and frostings. If a photo would help, go to krispykreme.com and look for a doughnut variety called "powdered sugar." Hope this helps.

Yep, for icing, and for other things.

I have a pudding and cream cheese desert I make and it uses powdered sugar. More or less anything that needs to be really smooth.

I think I get it now......................it may be what we call Icing Sugar..........we use it mixed with water & food colouring for icing cakes etc.

Thank ya kindly everyone...............now we can go ahead with the recipe......just needed to check that bit out.::yes::

Looks like you have it all sorted out, Nutsy :)

Yes, confectioner's sugar, powdered sugar and icing sugar are all the same ;)

Good luck on the projects.

Thanks Nancy...........................only it's not me who's doing them....it's DS.

So far so good................the cake will be the real test tho.:D

Are you making Chocolate or vanilla?

Is there a Chocolate Variety?

The one I got from the Internet I assume would have to be vanilla, as there is no chocolate or cocoa or anything in it........

Does anyone have a recipe for the Chocolate variety?

If they are what I think they are, they are my very favorite cookie, I make tons of them at Christmas. We just call them snowballs. They are very yummy cookies. They are simple to make.

1 c. butter
1/4 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 c. chopped pecans

Cream butter and sugar; add vanilla and flour and mix well. Fold in chopped nuts. Shape into small balls on un-greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes at 350o. roll in powdered sugar while warm. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

I pop them in a zip-loc bag of confectioner's sugar and shake them around to coat them.

Someone sent me a recipe a while back for chocolate ones (called them "mudballs" or something similar) but I haven't tried it. I think it has cocoa in it and you coat the cookies with cocoa powder instead of the powdered sugar. This one sounds similar:

and this one sounds really delicious!

Now I'm hungry!

I guess it's not too soon to start making (and freezing) those Christmas cookies! Last year I made over 30 dozen! Yikes!

That's supposed to read 350 *degrees* Farenheit. (180 Celcius).

Hey thanks so much for that.............I like the sound of that better than the other ones..........I'm not a big fan of icing sugar anyway.;)

My DH refers to it as "10X". I see that on the box, too. Never heard of that until I married him. We always called it confectioner's sugar.
