We recently had the opportunity to spend three nights at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C., which is a resort available in the Concierge Collection. We were not staying there on points, but I thought I would share our experience for anyone that might be considering doing so. The hotel in itself is fabulous, it is built in the side of a mountain, such that when you take the elevator to your room (if staying in one of the wings), you actually are going down because the lobby is on the main floor. That is with the exception of the original rooms located in the main part of the building.

The lobby is cavernous with a huge fireplace, small bar and there was a trio playing music each evening. There is a large open-air verandah off the main lobby that is Chops Restaurant. Rather pricey ($24.00 for a 10 ounce ribeye and all side dishes cost extra) but the view and ambience are worth the money. Nothing like watching the sun set behind the mountains as you are having your dinner.

The rooms are huge. We had a king-sized bed, extremely comfortable and they offer the same mattresses for sale. The bedspread is almost like a heavy tapestry. The furnishings are not standard hotel fare. Lamps may have shades made from mica or leather. There is a loveseat and another club chair, also a nice desk with two chairs with a computer port. Huge windows give you breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Bathroom is large enough with an additional sink outside the main bathroom to facilitate more than one person getting ready in the morning. There is a huge cabinet that houses the t.v., a vcr, a stereo system, small microwave and mini fridge and coffee maker. I was told these are in all the rooms. I am not a good judge of dimensions, but I would say that the room is much bigger than an OKW studio.

The true star of the hotel is the 1-year old world-class Spa. I was lucky enough to have treatments there on 2 days. The first was a short day with just a pedicure. Second day I spent the better part of the day there getting a manicure and facial and enjoying all the other facilities. I have no words to describe this place. If you are not having any treatments, there is a $35/day charge to use the Spa. If you have a treatment, it is all included. There is beautiful stonework, a lap pool, therapeutic pool, therapeutic waterfall pool, jacuzzi, plunge pool, dry sauna, inhalation room, steam saua, outdoor pool with fireplace and beautiful lounge areas with fireplaces, elixers, tonics, flavored waters to drink and healthy snacks galore. The hours were from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., so you can make a full day of it or go in the morning to swim and then return in the evening. I can tell you that you are pampered and treated like royalty. There were just as many men as women using the spa. The music is very calming and soothing and the entire experience peaceful and relaxing.

I would not hesitate to use points to stay at the Grove Park, mainly for the use of the Spa. Other things in the area to do include golf, the Biltmore House, many arts and crafts galleries, Grandfather mountain and not too terribly far from Cherokee that has Harrahh’s Casino..

Any questions, please feel free to ask.

It sounds heavenly. Thanks so much for the detailed report.

that the entire area is wonderful and downtown Asheville is a lot of fun. It's a really wonderful vacation destination. Glad to hear you had such a great time!

Thanks for sharing the info!

Thanks - sounds great. Is there much there for kids to do? How far is it to drive there from Hilton Head?

Thanks so much for posting -- this is an area we really want to go to and were considering Grove Park Inn since it's part of Concierge. Now it's a definite!!

In April, we stayed in the historic part of the inn, on the fifth floor--two doors down from the room haunted by the "pink lady", who supposedly fell to her death from the 5th floor to the 3rd floor attrium. The elevator that we had to use was very small, with the accordian doors, and with an elevator operator 24 hours a day. The first time we got on, my DD made some comment about "this isn't the tower of terror is it?" and the operator remembered her every other time we rode, and would tease her. Our room overlooked the front portico and parking area of the hotel, and was very large. We had 2 double beds that were so comfortable--they were piled with pillows and comforters, etc. Also in the room were two real leather chairs that were wonderful for reading in, and smelled so good. OUr room also had the fridge, CD player, TV, coffee maker. There were 2 closets in the room--one was large, lined with cedar and had the little light that comes on automatically when you open the door. OUtside of our room was a sitting area that was open to the 3rd floor attrium where there was more seating, and tables with checker sets, and with puzzles, etc. The resort has an indoor pool, indoor tennis courts, and an aerobics studio, that is separate from the spa. In season they offer daily child activities in a very large room in the same building with the pool. We visited off season, so DD didn't do the day thing, but did a kids night out on Friday night, which only had 3 other kids in it. They played games, swam and painted T-shirts. She enjoyed it, but was a little bored because the other children were quite a bit younger. we were there during prom season and saw so many prom couples coming to eat at the restaurant. I noticed that during the day, lots of people would sit out on the porch in the rockers and read. Asheville is quite nice for a visit. Not sure how long it would take to get from Hilton Head. Sorry so long.

Thanks for the thorough report. It brings back great memories of our stay at Grove Park Inn last fall.

Asheville is about a 5 hour drive from Hilton Head. We have made that trip frequently over the last 18 years. The drive is all interstate except the last few miles.

I would have thought the drive to be longer from Hilton Head, but I guess it is the angle that you drive. It took us 4.5 from Raleigh to get to Asheville (but that also included stopping at the Pepperidge Farm Outlet store in Burlington) and then Hilton Head is about 5 hours away from Raleigh in the other direction. I would have thought it about the same as driving from one North Carolina Coast to the other, but then I also realize that the North Carolina Coast goes much further east than the South Carolina Coast. Guess that would make a trip to WDW from Asheville about 9-10 hours, then.

I wonder what route you took - from Chapel Hill it only took us 3 hours. That math doesn't seem to add up... :)

From the HHI area, we take I-95 north to I-26 west through Columbia SC and up to Asheville NC. Then I-240 east (a pretty short arc of highway around Asheville) takes you close to the Grove Park Inn.

We live near Asheville and it takes us about 6 hours to reach any resort on HHI, door-to-door, including a short meal/rest stop. It takes us about 10-11 hours to get to WDW if we travel during the night and take I-26 to I-95 to I-4. It's 12 hours during the day, same route, 2 stops. It's 11-14 hours drive time, if we choose the inland route (I-26 to I-85 to I-75 through Atlanta and Ocala to visit relatives in those cities). Remember the bypasses in most cities during rush hours.
