Concerns about booking

I am considering buying in to DVC. Went through the presentation, have watched this DVD at least 10 times, been all over this board, and lots of other places.

My biggest concern is availability. What I am most interested in is the Grand Villas. The idea of going to Disney with my extended family is very appealing to me. The second week of September seems to work great for everybody. How hard is it to book that time window every year?

Part of what really concerns me is I tried calling yesterday and kept getting disconnected. Then I called today, was on hold for fifteen minutes, finally decided to leave a voice message. I left my number twice during the message. I did not receive a return phone call yet. I realize it is sunday, but there was no indication they werent working today.

Is this the level of service to be expected?

Who did you try calling today? Your guide, member services, DVC sales?

If you book day 1 at your home resort you likely won't have any problems at OKW, SSR or AKV.

The only caveat I would add the Dean’s assessment is that it would now have to be a full week or more. Otherwise the odds are significantly less.

Can you please explain why it will now be harder to book a GV for 3 or 4 days. I do not understand.
Thanks.

There was a recent change allowing one to book a week on day 1. There's some discussion and disagreement on the effect this will have.

No GV at VWL or BCV. BWV has the fewest of all the resorts.

A couple of thoughts:

Second week of Sept is one of the lowest-use DVC times ... if you book at your 11-month window, I can't see that there would ever be all that much of a problem getting your reservation...I've never even tried to book a grand villa, altho I read here that getting one can be difficult...but it would seem to me that in the second week of Sept your chances should be pretty decent, especially at the bigger resorts, even if you don't call right when your 11-month window opens.

Another thought: we've been told over & over that MS won't talk to a non-member...and MS is the only way you can book a DVC unit...so if you called MS, they wouldn't have talked to you (unless you've already joined)...if you called CRO (regular Disney) whatever they might say to you about availability would be completely irrelevant to whether a DVC villa of any size at any time might be available...CRO and DVC inventories are totally separate. So are the CMs...so good or bad service at one means nothing as compared to the other...

Don't know about your guide...ours always calls back promptly, but each one is different...but guides are strictly sales people; they aren't part of the reservation system, so their knowledge, while "insider," wouldn't necessarily be anything more than "probably/maybe/possibly" type advice...they can help get an initial reservation which is a condition of the sale...but they don't have anything to do w/subsequent reservations...that's all MS...

Having said that, in my experience, DVC CMs wouldn't get the same very high marks I'd have given to CRO CMs...maybe it's just coincidence, and maybe it's different now...but two years ago, when we first bought into DVC, I noticed how much less friendly/helpful the DVC CMs were as compared to the CRO CMs...not that the DVC CMs were unfriendly--they were fine--just not as "we'll do anything for you" service-oriented as the CRO folks were...now, tho, I haven't called anyone but MS for two years and I know considerably more about how to work the DVC system so the DVC CMs are just fine...some are friendlier than others; some are more knowlegeable than others...but they're all at least just fine...

I've never tried to leave a message for a call-back on reservations, tho...didn't know you could! We have experienced times (both at CRO and at DVC) when the call centers are so busy that busy signals and lengthy wait times happen...

Final thought: I read these boards multiple times each day (like everyone else, I'm a Disney/DVC addict!) and I see a LOT of comment on how difficult availability is/is getting. That has not been my experience. True, there are times when you might have to use a waitlist, or take the resort that's available...but I've never ever not gotten a reservation...and we've done or reserved 10 trips since joining DVC (boy that sounds "bad!" Told you we're addicts!)...we even got a five-day in-the-same-villa reservation at Old Key West for spring break week (one of the three busiest and "most expensive" (highest point charge) times of the year) only 10 days before we went...I had to "work it" a bit...and went into it not "expecting" it to work out...but it did...the first year, we bought in late June and called for a T-giving reservation--had to use the W/L, but we did get it (w/out the help of our guide, as I didn't know I could use his help!)...so while you do have to be aware that especially for busy times (and perhaps for limited villas like grand villas) you might have to use the wait list, or be flexible as to resort choice, by and large I have found that availability is nowhere near as difficult as I would have believed simply by reading the posts here.

Good luck w/your decision...

If you are thinking about an OKW GV weekday (very low point requirements) they are competitive all year long (obviously worse at more popular times)

Here is a link to the discussion on the new booking rules http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1861954

In case you do not have 8 hours to read it all here is my synopses for your situation

Members who have reservations starting dates 1,2,3 days ahead of yours and are booking 5,6,7 days respectively will have an opportunity to book these rooms (27 in all) before your first opportunity. The 7-day people actually have 3 opportunities and the 6-day people 2 days.

A lot more info on the thread.

SSR GV's are not as difficult to book. I booked for 2009 spring break in March. We were away and I didn't feel like calling day by day while on vacation. Called about two weeks fter the 11 month window and there was plenty of availability.

Unfortunately, as changes occur it is difficult to predict how it will affect booking. No one can predict precisely.

We own at SSR and have been able to enjoy all the other resorts with the exception of AKV (haven't tried yet). We travel during the spring break and the busy last week fo F&W.

I think the phone system was having "issues" yesterday. I called three times and it would just cut off in the middle of the message telling you what to push.

The fourth time it worked. That has never happened before so I don't think it's indiciative of the service.

However, you may have to hold just the nature of the business. Since I generally forget to call until late in the day I find my holds are pretty short.

i called the DVC-MAGIC line that was in the video. Still as of today no return phone call. Very Dissapointing.

Just another thought - if you are unable to get a grand villa and willing to stay in a studio you could book 3 studios (which also cost fewer points). We just got back from Vero Beach with extended family and this is what we did. There were three families and I booked 3 studios. All of our rooms were right next to each other and we had more privacy.

If a GV is available for Day 1 of the reservation that I want, can I make the reservation for 3-4-5 nights?

Thank you.

I know that this is an option, but early the last week in June we had the BC as well as 3 Inn rooms. There is absolutely nothing to compare to a BC, IMHO! This was our first family visit to VB, we were celebrating somethings that were very special....we had made a "vow" that if we stay at VB as a family, it will be in a BC, and now, I have to somehow figure out how to make it happen!!! Looking at resales is an option!!!!:lmao:

Now, I'm glad that I had canceled the BWV GV and went for a 2 bedroom and studios at VWL, if I only "had" to book GV's at BWV, we really would be in trouble!!!:lmao:

Yes. The new booking method says that you may call and book your stay (for 7 nights or less) as early as 11 months prior to arrival. The good news is that if Day 1 is available when you call, so the other days you want will be as well. One call and you're done.

OP - You will not have a problem getting a GV at AKV, SSR or OKW for the second week of September if you call when your 11 month window opens. September dates book more slowly (at all of the resorts) than dates for most other months of the year. I would be totally shocked if the GV category sells out for September dates during the first week the window is open. It just doesn't happen. You'll be fine.
