Computer Locks Up When Trying to Run Videos

I have had this ongoing problem since I upgraded my computer from 98 to XP. Any time I go to a site that has video, my computer locks up. The best example is one of Kirk's granddaughter videos. I have the latest version of QuickTime, but it's still happening. I also tried going to the link for a Mission Space video I sent last week, and it locked up then, too. Oh, and some of Dan's sound/video posts do it, too. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

You have a popup blocker?? A firewall could also possibly block it I think.

I have the Google pop-up blocker, but this was happening before that. I also have Zone Alarm as my firewall, in addition to a router firewall. I'm going to try the Mission Space video on a different computer (with Google, ZA and on the same router) and see if it happens. Will let you know in a sec.

Other computer works fine, so it's definitely something on this computer.

It may not be quicktime that is the problem. Do you have a link to something you are trying to see that I can look at?

It could be a Windows Media file.

Can you download the file to your machine locally and view it that way?

Here's a link to one of Kirk's movies that locks up the computer.

Trying to save it on my computer. I'm going to go ahead and post this, so in case my computer locks up it will be posted.

Okay, I was able to download it and run it with Windows Media Player. The movie was linked to Real One player, and I bet that's causing the problem! I'm going to try uninstalling that and see what happens.

Good idea Dan.

mckryan, I'm going go behind your computer screen and see if I can see anything from there...

I've always had better success with Windows Media Player when playing DVDs, too. The media player that comes with Disney DVDs always locks my computer up. I have to open up Windows Media Player, and then open the Disney movie from within there.

Okay, that's just creepy! LOL At least don't have it on an infinite loop!

I still have Real Player 4 stuck on the system because it won't delete saying another app is using ra3228_8.dll. The other Real Player uninstalled.

I opened Windows Media and ran the file saved on my computer just fine. Then when I tried to double click the file and chose Windows Media Player, the computer locked up. I went in and associated the file type with WMP, and it opened fine. Now I'm going to go try the link Kirk provided and see what happens. I'll be back.... ;)

Well, I was able to click on Kirk's link, and I got the file started, but then it closed down. Now when I go there I get a red X. Argh!

Okay, I've screwed something up now. When I go to this thread

I just get a box where the sound control is. Argh, again!

You need to reboot your machine to get rid of the RA totally. If you ran something, it's still in memory and may be in use. So reboot, then you should be able to finish the uninstall.

Then go to Microsoft's site and download MP 9.0 and that should solve the problem. Either that, or use the 'add/remove software' choose Windows components and then choose Media Player, uninstall, then reinstall.

Nope, no go on the reboot and trying to get rid of RA 4.0. So aggravating! It tells me that decadnet.dll and ra3228_8.dll are being used by something else. 4.0 is so old, so I can't even reinstall it and then uninstall.

Do you think downloading MS Media Player will help me see this thread from Dan today? My computer locked up the minute I tried to open it. Edit: yes, I was able to go to Dan's post with the install of MP 9.0. Let's see if this holds out for me. I still want to get rid of RP 4.0 on my system!

The magic of it all......(sound)
