Help....I have no idea about technology.......this sounds good....but is it?? I want to replace my desktop that is about 7 years old with something that my 12 and 15 year old can use for school....word processing, internet and power point. Thanks for any advise!!!! WWT

not bad but the 1.5ghz dual core is not supper fast. You didn't list a price but you should be able to find something faster. I like to shop around there is a great site www.gotapex.com I like that every day has deals from HP, Dell, and Lenovo both desktops and laptops. They don't sell them they just have links to the sites.

The Acer laptop the OP described is $278.98 at walmart.com. Even for a low-priced laptop, with Windows 7 I would want at least 4GB RAM, and probably would hold out for at least 500 GB harddrive. My vote would be to pass on this one, check the Black Friday ads that are already up to get an idea of what might be available, and keep checking online for sales before then. I think it's worth spending a little more (if you can) to get something that won't go obsolete by New Year's

OP, if you can go up to $400 in price, Office Max has an Acer with an i3 2330M processor, 4GB RAM and 500GB harddrive for $399.99 ($200 off their regular price). That's a better desktop replacement than the Walmart model, but is more spendy, obviously. I'm a sucker for a sale, though If you don't like Acer, Best Buy has a new Toshiba model with similar specs for the same price. I think both have web cams and HDMI out, too.

Hope this helps someone looking for a basic, inexpensive option -- Fry's online has a HP with an Intel B950 processor, 4GB Ram and 500GB harddrive for $299.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate (so $349.99 out the door). With that processor, not much for gaming, but fine for everyday stuff I think. Limit 1 per household.

Win 8 is still about a year off as it is in the release candidate stage. IMHO Win 8 is not something to call home about. The back end is still Win 7 but the main page uses the large icons like Win 8 mobile for the phones. I did not like it and deleted it after a couple months...

Anyway, OP try to get something with at least 4 gigs of memory. That will push you into mid range hardware and should do well for what you want.

Jump onto newegg.com and sign up for their sale emails. They periodically have relatively nice laptops on sale for less then $400.
