Hi All,
I just completed my first race! My gosh, what fun.
The Race: Edison 5K as part of the Edison Festival of Lights http://www.edisonfestival.org/
Location: Ft Myers, Florida - a very cold 55 degrees at race time (6:00 p.m. start)
What makes it special: You run along the parade route an hour before the parade begins which means the course is packed with people cheering you on. There were 1175 runners.
My Goal: To finish and not get hurt
My Finish: 24:29 which was way faster than I thought I'd run. Placed 397th.
Lesson Learned: It is easy to get caught up in the moment and run raster than you should. I made it through this one, but if it were a half or full marathon I would have paid dearly.
A little background: I have been running inside for a few years and only started outside this past October. I worked my way up to 8 miles then had problems with my IT Band so I'm back to 5 miles and building again. I had no desire to race when I started running, but you all know how that goes. Now I have the bug to do a marathon. Of course it will be Disney in January!
Anyway, it was was fun experience. I did it just to get the first race out of the way and gain the experience of a race. I did forget pins, so had to use paperclips to attach the number. I also learned that I cannot drink from a cup and run at the same time
I usually drink from a bottle. Oh well, the cool water down the front of me felt fine. Other than that, it was a great time!
Signed up for the 5K Treasure Run as part of the Shrimp Festival on Ft Myers Beach in 3 weeks. This one will be a challenge as it runs you over the bridge twice. It's a HUGE bridge too! After that I think I'll volunteer to help out at a race since as the local track club does an awesome job.
enjoy,
Duane
