Competitive figure skating moms...

I really dislike the girls in tights and shorts - which usually have SKATE or something on the bum! (sorry tjmw - I don't mean to insult here - I know how hard it is to get 9 yrolds to wear what we want! LOL!)

It also makes me nervous when skaters wear jeans or pants that are not absolutely tight to the leg - I remember as a skater way back doing that once, and only once. I caught my blade in the leg of the pants and down I went. It's really easy to do. Capri's would be OK if they are the ones that are like the leggings.

DD also always wears gloves - never thought about mittens.

LOL - no offense taken in fact we have a no words on tush ever rule in our home. I should have said skating tights and soccer shorts!!

fwiw - and way OT, I just got home from the mall trying to find some shorts for my 9yo and could not find anything comfortable that she would like without the words.

Also thanks for the advice on the long pants getting caught. That is something dd can understand and I had not thought about. I don't skate so I am clueless!

TJ,

Don't know if you had noticed, but they recently opened a Kohls department store on Rte 1 in Saugus. The same plaza as Wild Harvest. I've been a few times and they have some great prices and good selections. Even at the higher levels, I see a majority of the girls wearing either shorts or tight pants. Whatever your DD is comfortable in.

I guess I fall into the catagory of "the bad skaters mom" because DD9 wore her shorts she got from the last competition that said SKATE on the rear and a matching skater 04 t-shirt yesterday to school and her private lesson;)
DD usually has to wear her practice dress to team practice so all the girls look the same but during privates she can wear what she wants which is usually shots or stretchey yoga pants that we get from The Childrens Place.
We have our end of the season ice show this weekend which includes 5 shows from Friday till Sunday so guess where I am going to be this weekend? Our synchro team is in charge of flower and t-shirt sales. We are also doing a 50/50 raffle and the American Girl Doll company has donated a doll with the ice skater dress for us to raffle off.

Hi - good luck tjmq - if your not already heading to the rink, that is.

How old was your dd when she started synchro? My 9yo is not at a level yet where she can even consider this but she LOVES this type of skating. She can't wait to watch the DVD from our show as we had 3 synchro teams exhibit.

FWIW- in my opinion there is no such thing as a "bad skating mom" with all the parent involvement, driving, freezing and oh the $$. If your dd is happy, comfortable, warm and safe then that's all that counts!

Back OT does anyone know of an instructional dvd for purchase? My oldest is a very visual learner and would love something like this. TIA
TJ

Oh - and Michelle, my 7yo dd and I were at the MK on 12/7, how wonderful to open MK!

She started with the synchro team last year at 8 and we had a team of 19 this year 9 of last years girls came back and we had a team of 14 for next years team all 14 are coming back so 9 of these girls will be in the 3rd year of skating together and 6 into the 2nd so we are hoping for a really strong team next year. Like I said we have our show this weekend and Monday we start clinics for next seasons team. No rest for the wearey. Not only will DD9 have to practice with the next seasons team but she will also have to keep this years program fresh because we are traveling to Minnesota is August to compete at Worlds. YEAH
One of the dads from our team is in the midst of organizing a pizza party for us in Minnesota and he is inviting one of the international teams to join us. Possibly Korea or Spain. How cool is that.

Tjmw2727-
How funny you were there that day -- we were very happy to let you in, lol!

I am a former skater ( started as an adult and competed at adult nationals) I made all my own dresses and beaded them as well. I used sew on Swarovski crystals with a small hole in the middle. Here is my question....

A previous poster mentioned "stoning" her dresses with a "Bedazzler" What kind of stones do you use? The reason I am asking is this. I have thousands of tiny Swarovski Crystal discs--several colors all 3 mm with a foil backing, most round and some marquis shaped. I used to work for a temporary tattoo company that sold "body jewels" as well and these were left over when the company closed. Rather than see them thrown away, I got them! I would love to see them go to use, but I don't use a bedazzler tool. Would something like these beads be useful to anyone? If you are interested e-mail me at LJC1861@AOL.com and I can send you a picture. I would love to help out up and coming skaters with resourceful Moms who make dresses. I know how costly dresses and beading can be!

Hi, Linda -- I sent you an e-mail.

Wanted to share a coincidence with everyone. We were at the arena yesterday and I was talking to another mom. Here was our conversation:

Her: "We won't be here Saturday."
Me: "Oh, really? Us either. How funny. We're going to Disney World."
Her: "Get out! So are we!"
Me: "Oh my gosh, how funny! When are you leaving?"
Her: "Friday at noon, when are you going?"
Me: "Oh my gosh, so are we! We are picking DD up from school and hitting I-75"
Her: "No way, oh my gosh -- that is what we are doing!"
Me: "No way, where are you staying?"
Her: "Poly -- you?"
Me: "Contemporary!"

and so we laughed. How funny is that -- we made our plans totally independentally and we are leaving at the same time to come back, too.

I thought it was REALLy funny!

Michelle,

I never got it, or I may have deleted it. Put something about the beads in the title. I get TONS of junk mail on this address and may have deleted yours in the midst of it all. Sorry...

Linda

Michelle,

Have a great time at WDW. We'll be at the GF on May 30th following our 3 night Disney cruise. We just gave our son's coach all the dates that he'll be away from the ice over the next few weeks. Lot's of year end school stuff coming up, plus he runs track and plays soccer. No problem though, his summer ice will be starting soon and that will put him at the rink 5 days a week for 4 hours a day. That will give him plenty of time to get ready for regionals in October. He has to choreograph a new short and long program too. It's not too bad though, he will get to the rink at 10am and finish by 2pm. That will still give him the whole afternoon to hang out with his friends.

On my way out to the door to do some last minute vacation shopping. Have a great day everyone.

My DD9 had her ice show this past weekend (1 show Friday, 2 shows Saturday and 2 shows Sunday) Tell me I am not completely worn out! Well our synchro team sells all the flowers, t-shirts and we do a 50/50 raffle in addition to raffleing off an American girl doll in a skater dress. I worked 12 hours on Saturday selling and doing flower delivery. We earned about 2000.00 to go toward our world competition in August in Minnesota, Sunday we got to the rink only to find out that they had been robbed sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. All our money is gone in addition to the rinks money and the consession stand money. The kicker is that the thieves not only stole the money but they actually took the safes (3, 250lbs each) too. Now we are starting over from square one with our fund raising.

There is a girl that lives near me, Kimmie Meisner (sp?), my boyfriend covers her for our local paper. She won (I believe) the Junior Nationals this year. She is AMAZING!!

Keep your eyes open for Kimmie Meisner. Along with Katy Taylor, too. Both will do well in the next few years. There are a few senior level skaters at one of our local clubs--Alex Patterson, Alissa and Amber Czisny (twins--can you imagine their skating bills??) that have placed in the top 12 at Nationals.

Tmq2766!
OMG -- that is AWFUL! WOW! That is a major robbery! Holy Cow! Any leads? It would almost have to be an inside job.
I'm speechless except for HOLY COW!

tmq - I am so sorry to hear this, hopefully they can recover the safe unopened??? Good luck - man all your hard work!

TJ

They do think it was an inside job.... They think who ever did it spent the night and when everyone was gone they did the dirty work....
We had a few spectators come up to us and say that we should put the story about our fund raising loss in the paper and maybe some local businesses would come forward to help the girls out. The owner of the Ice House asked up not to because he doesn't want the negative publicity which I can understand. He said he would make things right for us even if the insurance company doesn't cover the cash loss.
It is just very frustrating that some low life could steel from little kids! Plus because they think it was an inside job the person or persons who did it knew exactly who they were steeling from.

Hi all, just wanted to say thanks for the info and encouragement.

The girls had a blast this morning at the competition. My 7yo placed 2nd and my 9yo placed 4th. They have a great group of friends they skate with and even competed with and they all had fun, did well and can't wait to do it again. My 9yo got very nervous even though her coach was with her. She is already confident that having done it once she will do better next time.

It was an extremely fun positive experience for all of them and I am so glad they picked this sport.

We are home for a rest and some lunch and then my dd wants to go back to the rink to watch some of her friends competing with programs. Good thing we live close to the rink!

TJ

Congrats to you and your girls, Tjmw2727!
Now that they've gotten a taste of competition, look out! Here come the expenses!:D

Thanks Michelle, II am not looking forward the the $$ especially 2x. My older dd just got her first pair of "real skates" and that was an eye opener. She needed a toe pick to do something and the "off the shelf" skates didn't cut it. I must say she was soooo happy after we had her fitted and got the new blade that it was worth it. I guess my 7yo will need them come fall.

So far we are staying with the Jr Club as the cost is less but we still access to some of the sr ice time just at a pay per skate fee. The girls are already talking about some of the local basic competitions next year.

I can't help noticing your countdown, are you going to be at WDW over the Columbus Day weekend? We are going for a long weekend at that time as the girls have some extra days off from school in addition to Columbus Day.

Maybe we will let you into the MK this time <g>.

TJ

TJ...what kind of boots and blades did they fit her with? My DD has Klingbeils and loves them. Hardly any break-in time. Let's just hope your DD doesn't have a growth spurt within a year. The guy that sharpens my daughter's skates told me she went thru 3 pair in one year due to growing feet. That's enough to take out a home equity loan just for skates:hyper:

Have a great weekend!
