Comparing POP to DVC makes me crazy!!!

I try, I swear I try to be nice and understanding. But every time somebody new asks "Why is DVC such a good deal -- I can stay at Pop or All-Stars for $89 a night?" I just want to scream.

Uhh, because THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! One is a glorified Motel 6, and the other offers a resort experience.

Certainly, these folks have never actually toured the DVC properties, right?

No i would guess they have not toured a dvc. But to be fair before we joined i may have made the same comment only becuz I never gave it much thought about where we stayed, as long as it was clean, close to wdw and reasonable I was happy.

We Stayed at all-star once to save weekend points (during that kids football thing) and it was sooo loud, and crowded and busy I plan never to do that again. I have to admit i've become a hotel snob since becoming a dvc owner.

I just never knew what we were missing.

$89.00 + 12% tax = $99.68/night

OKW Studio takes 8-points/night, @ dues of $3.86/point = $30.88, and there are no taxes.

After you get their attention with that statement, you can explain that's at the lowest point schedule and take it from there. But considering dues only, the equivalent $99.68 is the same as annual dues for over 25 points, and that will get them a spacious 2-B/R OKW villa for a night, during several months of the year.

Well I will be in a position to compare the 2 in January! We split our stay with SSR and 2 rooms at Pop which I got for $59 each under BR code. I would like the resort experience while the kids want the brightly colored loud themed Disney resort experience.

You have a point it is a tired old refrain. It's just that it comes from new posters who are unaware. Let them enjoy POP Century, if that's what they prefer. I presume they are able to add and multiply $$$ to do thier own calculations.

I have just come off the UK forum where they are debating I-Drive or On site and they think I am a snob for suggesting pop rather than I drive!!!!

I think before someone can debate properly they have to try both sides. I am sure once staying at a DVC resort there can be no argument. I stayed most of my vacation on I-Drive in May and was my worse USA holiday ever. Can't wait to come back "home" October 2006.

I just stayed at Pop a few weeks ago and loved it. Is it the same as my home at BWV? Nope. But, it's sometimes nice to try the other places Disney has to offer. While I love BWV, I really don't avail myself of it's many amenities. We don't use the health club, although maybe we should. We don't eat in the BW restaurants too much and do very little cooking in our villa. But, I will defend my BWV to the death if need be!!! But that does not preclude my enjoying stays elsewhere on-site. Now, truth be told...I don't think my dh could ever stay in a value resort. He truly is a DVC/deluxe kind of guy. He thinks camping is going to a Holiday Inn!!!

And don't forget to have your listener compare the living room, kitchen, dining table, jacuzzi and washer/dryers with the luxurious amenities at POP or All-Stars...

In my good old selling days, when someone asked me that same type of motel, versus resort, question my reply was, "If you want to buy a Cadillac, do you ask a guy who owns a Volkswagen, what he thinks about it?"

Boy, does that ever take me back!!! But I really do enjoy the responses you folks come up with! It makes me feel young and full of P & V!

It is a comparison that escapes me completely. This last trip we were with friends staying at POP.

Call me silly, but somehow POP did not have quite the same feel of VWL. But then again I don't think that Spam tastes like sirloin either.

People view accommodations in very different ways. Many folks just want to get their butts within striking distance of WDW - as cheaply as possible. On site or off. They'd rather allocate the bulk of their vacation money elsewhere (or so they think). Others, like us, feel that where we stay is an important aspect of the immersive Disney experience. It's not just a place to sleep.

I doubt that most of the "just want a place to sleep" crowd are ever going to be convinced of the added value of DVC. So why bother? They'll always see POP or a cheapo place on I-drive as the perfect choice. And for them, it probably is.

Didn't even have to be an owner to catch the hotel snob bug.

We've stayed (in order of preference) I-drive for pre-post Disney, ASMu, POP, Swan, POFQ, VWL 1 BR, CBR (several times), BCV St, OKW 1BR, AKL SV, Disneyland Grand Californian DTD View, OKW 2BR, BCV 2BR, OKW GV.

For some, it is hard to decide an order of preference. It isn't even apples and oranges, it is a whole mixed fruit salad. We like OKW for the size, BCV for the location, and CBR for the nostalgia (it was "our" resort for several of our trips in the beginning). In the last couple of years, we have tended to split our stay between something old and something new. At Thanksgiving, our Saturday when we arrive late will be CSR. Then it is 3 nights in a OKW GV. If the waitlist doesn't come through, it will be 2 nights CBR at DD17's request. While I like other resorts better than the values, DD17 down right hates the values because of "the way they feel". I've created a monster.

I've taken my niece and nephews twice each... this will be my brother's first trip, so a variety of resorts and room types might work out well. When he decided to go, I went straight for the GV for that OMG factor... hoping he'll catch the DVC bug.

Maybe it is a little like the way my parents think. A few years ago they went to WDW for three weeks. The first week they stayed at POFQ with an AP rate--less then they usually spent on an AS. All I heard when I checked in for the weekend was how it was nice but they could make due with AS. Just too fancy for them and that the food court didn't offer as many choices / prices (perhaps they didn't think things should increase in price afer six years). OK I'm thinking if they think this is "fancy" I really don't want to see/hear what they have to say about WLV. The next two weeks was spent in a 2BR at WLV. Again they loved it but again it was too fancy. I'm not sure why but they just don't believe they are entitled to luxury for some reason. All I hear is how when they go back to WDW they are staying in an AS because that is all they need. Whatever. It isn't like they paid for WLV, it was my treat, and it was less expensive for them at POFQ than an AS becasue of the AP discount I was able to set up for them. I gues I'll throw it back to those that get it, get it and those that don't, don't. I'm going to continue to go and enjoy it my way and they can do so their way.

To be honest we love the All Stars and POP every bit as much if not more than our DVC stays. And Coronado is tops over OKW for us but BWV is our favourite DVC. We still love staying in the values every trip there is nothing else like it at Disney and it is truly a Disney experiance staying there.

Bill, that is a bit off because you can't compare the cost of a room to only the cost of DVC dues, unless you got your contract for free. You should really factor in the amortized cost of the upfront purchase. Which right now is a liitle over $2.00 for SSR up to about $2.50 for the rest. So with both factors a point cost at between $5.86 and $6.36 per point you get a more realistic sense of how they compare -- and it is still a good deal.

You can't save money at WDW anyway. It's impossible. The place sucks it out of you the whole time you're there. If you need to save stay away.
