Was reading on how we could spend our miles this morning.

Companion flights seems to good to be true 21,000 miles for a friend or family to fly with you.

Are these extremely hard to get hold off? I guess you have to taxes etc on them.

Can any one help?

You do have to pay the taxes and surcharges for the companion flight. You also have to book a certain fare code (I.e a flexible fare). We priced it up one year and it worked out quite expensive. We ended up booking 2 miles plus money fares for less than it would have been with a free companion flight.

I have seen availability quite frequently though :)

Oh I knew there would be a catch lol.

The best way we have found is tranfer them to other comapnies, we had a fab night at dtd hilton last year on our miles and a dtd view was fab :-)

I've used companion fares a few times. One difference we found was that the main flyer still got miles for their flight wheras with miles and money you didn't (the time we did it - may have changed). Still counts as a reward flight so a limited number available each flight.
