Communicating with friends in parks, other than our mobiles any ideas ????

Totally understand people's scepticism on this. DH has just double-checked DS's online O2 bill for the time that we were in Florida recently. All texts to my phone were just deducted from his allowance. During that same period all texts he sent to his girlfriend's phone (she is in Austria) were charged as texts to an overseas number and not as part of his allowance.

I don't have anything to gain by misleading anyone on this!

Loftus is agreeing with what you are saying, it looks like its an old tariff. I have done some searching and found this

All new or upgrades on o2 (UK mobilephone network) since 20th February 2010, you will no longer get the 4 for 1 deal. Appartently they have replaced their previous x number of text messages a month with the new unlimited text package which makes the previous 4 - 4 - 1 unviable.

Previously, if you texted a UK mobile from anywhere in the world, they would allow this free of charge providing you had enough text credits remaining in your monthly/sim only plan. They would then subtract 4 of your free remaining texts for this international text message.

Looks like you are on a tariff no longer available since Feb last year, I suspect they have to continue with the deal you have until you cancel or upgrade.

Sorry Loftus and Wayne. It's not an old tariff. It's one he's had for less than a year. Nor does it deduct 4 texts for each one he sends to me.

Anyway. It's worked for us. I'll leave it at that. :)

Sounds a great deal for using abroad then:thumbsup2 I just assumed it was an older tariff.

Sorry, wasn't doubting you, just trying to suggest an explanation as I used to be with O2 and this was a definite advantage of their network.
Sounds like whatever has happened you've had a result - which makes a change with a mobile network. Long may it continue.

Thanks. Would be useful to know if anyone else has tried it.

We went as a group of 8, but knew that we would be splitting up into 3 groups at times - sometimes at different parks and areas altogether.
We bought 3 of the LG Net10 from a seller on ebay and have to say they worked a treat. They cost around $36 each and came with 300 minutes per handset. There were even enough days left on them for some friends of our to take them the following month and use them as well. Setting them up was also very easy - just by following the instructions that come with it - and DW did that on the way to the park on our first morning.
We have bought the walkie-talkies in the past and can't speak low enough of them. They cost us about $30 from Walmart and had loads of diferent frequencies on them, but it always seemed that everyone else in the park also had them and most of them were on the same frequency as us.

Also had similar experiences with walkie talkies - re the phones that you bought, do the minutes expire after a certain time or can you use them again the following year, say.

As far as I can remember they expired after 90 days - which is why we let our friends take them on their holiday with them

i use pay as you go phones a that i bought in orlando - at walgreens (the little drugstore)...there is one right near DTD...

i bought the net 10 phones, as they were the cheapest at the time...
at the time i didn't know that net 10 sits on the AT&T network (one of the worst networks in the US)....had i known that i would have opted for one of the other phones..

but they serve their purpose....we can call each other...and others can call us...
i paid less than $20 per phone..

in between trips, i keep them with all our orlando travel stuff so that we'll have them for the next trip..
