Coming Soon...The Villas at the Contemporary Resort

STOL? I know it's a landing strip but what does that stand for? Short Takeoff and Landing?

Yes, but more specifically it's used as a descriptor of an aircraft characteristic--meaning that an craft described as a STOL craft can desend, assend, come to a stop and gather lift in a much shorter distance than many/most aircraft.

The latest MouseTunes podcast has them building the next DVC resort in the STOL airstrip area, between the Contemporary and Wilderness Lodge Resorts.

If they build this one, even though the monorail runs through the airstrip property, we will have tons of posters complaining about the veiw of the TTC.

Thanks, I knew about VSTOL but I wasn't sure if they were one and the same.

There are many, many things that can be done to minimize that, just like things are done to minimize views in nearly every park at WDW. This complaint is WAY pre-mature. Let's see what happens. This could be very big.

The thing here is that the space in existing MK resorts is limiting. But not here. Here they can build a much larger resort then they can if they stick one on the POLY ot CR.

I'm trying to picture where this area is...

would it be the area off to your right; beside the Epcot monorail (that looks like it has an access road on it) before the light where you would turn left to Poly & right to WL?

LOL, talk about a mouthful, ala...you can't get there from here & I-4 runs North to South not East to West.

Concur... Disney isn't afraid of moving dirt... Most of you all know that the entire Magic Kingdom is the "second floor" of that complex, right?

If Dis Vac Development is going to commit the financial resources to this project, they won't screw up something as simple as the "view" when they know that they can end up charging more points for rooms with a MK view. I can easily imagine a resort complex where the "first floor" is parking and service areas, "second" floor is the lobby, restaurants, pool deck, shops, "promenade" (walkway to a new monorail stop or connection to the TTC) and the guest rooms start on the third level above ground. That would about cover the view problem. From checking out the aerial photos of the location, a bigger problem would be the orientation of the resort. You are pretty set back from Bay Lake or the Seven Seas Lagoon and pinched off by WL and TTC parking.

I've always heard - and only from folks here on the DIS - that DVC has declared that they will never again have different "categories" with different point costs for villas at a DVC resort. :confused3

ITA with the location / view problem. Hard to avoid a scenic view of Fort Wilderness Campground and/or the race track. And while I know that they have some great soundproofing (SSR facing DTD is quiet when the door is closed) I would not want to be anywhere near the race track on race day.

I'd have to think that if they built there, a lot of people would be disappointed - not what I think of when I hear the phrase "Monorail DVC Resort"....

ETA: Just looked at that photo again - maybe (given Disney's current savings efforts [pool temps, etc]) they will simply extend the MK parking lot tram service to pick up at the new Villas at STOL! :rotfl2: "Next Stop: TTC!" :lmao:

That's not the way I remember it. I think we here on this board have declared that DVC will never do so. And I suspect a few guides have said it along the way and possibly even a MS CM or two have done the same. However, I don't recall even one semi official report. I don't think we'll see view differences that are fairly subtle such as at BWV, but I don't think some more obvious differentials are out of the question.

My comment was in jest. I never complain about my views, I am happy to be there. I was making fun of all the complaining post I read.

Our family would love to stay at a CR DVC! DH loves the CR, although I personally am not overly fond of the theme. I would get over that quick in order to stay at a DVC property on the monorail! :thumbsup2

I believe the wing that is currently undergoing renovation is the North Garden Wing. Of the 2 wings, this one has the nicer views and is closer to the walkway to the MK.

South Wing and Tower rooms are being renovated. No plans for the North Wing have been announced, which adds credibility to the DVC rumors, IMO. The Tennis Center located near the North Wing is also closing, which would add even more space for a DVC wing.

From what I am understanding, a brand new DVC is going up in the STOL area. I agree with Lou Mongello on this. I think they want the first MK area resort to be much larger then they can make a wing of CR.

All of my info says it is the STOL and new construction

If you look at aerial photos of the CR, the North Garden Wing has a larger footprint than the VWL. I'm sure they would demolish the wing and build from the ground up. Add that space to the space that the soon to close Tennis Center takes up, plus the additional empty land that runs along the coast of Bay Lake, and you've got plenty of space for a DVC resort.

Judging from the comments regarding the CR (it's outdated, it has no themeing, etc) it seems that it's a less popular resort. Room rates are also lower than other monorail resorts. Disney even let SOG use a substantial block of rooms during their remodeling project to fill rooms. The last resort that had occupancy issues was the Villas at the Disney Institute. How did Disney solve that problem? By converting it to a DVC resort. Taking a wing of the existing CR down for a DVC resort follows already established patterns in two ways- building a DVC resort onto an existing property and converting a less popular resort into a DVC resort.

Below is the location of the proposed new DVC. Note the addition of the waterway plus the rerouting of the main roadway:

Ok, how do I post an image? I have a GIF file showing the location of the next DVC.

you have to switch your IMG's around. the first one should be
with the url in the middle.

ETA:
And it won't work if its a file on your computer, it will have to be from the net.

I think that would be great if they built a DVC there. Close to the MK, between FW and WL. Although, no true waterfront/views.

I still wish DVCDC was able to build something of "our" own in NYC! A planned project near Broadway got the old kibosh a number of years ago. It seems New Yorkers didn't want to be Disneyized. I'd love to see them convert a whole building. I'm sure it would be tasteful and be very pricey in terms of points needed for a stay, but imagine a 2 BR suite in Manhattan at Christmas!...M
