So I guess they think I'm stupid and I'm going to call up to ask them to bring me a box to the one tv that doesn't have it for the digital conversion. When I got my cable hookup to the computer there was a tv right next to me-kids watched dvds on it- well He hooked it up for us for free. If I get a box they'll chage me a monthly rental on it!

I guess we'll lose a few channels on this one (disney being one of them) but I think we'll live. We'll just go back to the dvds. It was nice while it lasted.

Comcast is playing catch-up with its competitors, and switching to digital for cable networks, like most of the competitors did years ago. This will free up a lot of bandwidth for new services that a lot of us have been clamoring for for years. With this transition, Comcast is making available two free DTAs (digital converter boxes). The cost of the DTAs is included in the expanded basic (or higher) package price subscribers are already paying -- they will not charge you extra for it. If the transition has occurred in your area, you can pick your DTAs up at the Comcast office, and avoid an extra installation fee. (I think in some areas they're even shipping them to folks, on request, without charge, but don't count on that.)

I had a box shipped to me free of charge. There will be no increase for it in my monthly bill.

In my area, the change is supposed to happen in october, so I have not yet connected and registered the new box.

hmmm now I am confused. They are charging me about $10 a month for my other 2 boxes (rental fee they call it I think) I am going to have to investigate this further- thanks for the info!

There is a difference between DTAs and STBs. DTAs give you access to unencrypted channels. You needs STBs for encrypted channels. They have always charged rental on STBs. It is possible that, in addition to doing the analog reclamation in your area, that due to cable theft they also have begun encrypting more channels. That's a different effort, and will vary from area to area based on how much theft is detected.
