Fried Shrimp Basket - Served with Coleslaw and French Fries $9.69

I imagine it sounds like a crazy question, but do they devein the shrimp?
Thanks!

I do not know the specific answer to your question. But from my general knowledge gained in the food and wine service industry, I can tell you that shrimp of the size that normally come in a fried basket are not deveined unless they are "butterflied". Once battered and fried, the consumer cannot see the vein, and what the consumer cannot see cannot hurt them. And the amount of material in even the fullest of veins does not add up to be a microgram and cannot be tasted. It is far too time consuming for the prep staff to have to devein thousands of shrimp each week, especially the smaller ones that end up fried and in baskets.

I can't be 100% positive that it was CCH, but I DO remember remarking to DH this past September that the shrimp were not deveined at one place we ate (only noticed that on a few of them) and CCH IS one of the places we ate shrimp. I'd say with my faulty memory that there's a good chance it was at CCH since I don't order shrimp that often.

They were very good though! I'd order them again.

I had the fried shrimp at CHH last week. The shrimp was butterflied prior to breading and I believe deveined. At least I didn't notice any veins and I normally would.

It was very good. :goodvibes

It may be time-consuming, and the amount of material may be small, but I refuse to eat shrimp that are not deveined. It's a lazy habit restaurants have gotten into. Let's face it, they are not "veins" --it's shrimp excrement!!!:scared1:

I won't eat non-deveined shrimp either! Deveined shrimp is readily available. It's just a bit more expensive.

Ditto - they have machines now that devein the shrimp for you. Its not even laziness.

1) No.
2) But, it is not a problem.
3) After all,
. . . your veggies are grown with "natural" fertilizer
. . . your beef is fed with ground-up beef by-products
. . . your sweetened soda pop comes from manure fields
. . . your cabin air on cruise ships is full of "gray water"
. . . your hands greet folks who don't wash after restroom breaks

OFF TOPIC: Have you ever wondered why people won't share tooth brushes in the morning with another after sharing an "evening" with them?

TheRustyScupper is somewhat right.

In my opinion a lot of this stuff is just in the mind. Just a few yrs ago no-one really gave a second thought about deveining the shrimp but these days those same people will not eat a veined shrimp, at least in my experience.

And it is true that sooo many products have stuff that you really would not want to eat if you knew what it was or what it was made with.

My position is, if it looks good and tastes good, eat it! :)

Actually, properly prepared shrimp carry no "excrement." They are purged prior to cooking and the "vein" is actually the EMPTY digestive tract. There is no need to take it out other than the fact that some people freak out if it is not removed.

According to the Straight Dope:

To be accurate (and this is the Straight Dope, after all), the black stuff is the contents of the intestine and not the intestine itself. There are several reasons for removing the intestine, the most obvious being the aesthetic appearance of the poop chute (I mean, how can you NOT look at it?!). In addition, the shrimp's colon and its contents can impart a disagreeable taste and gritty texture to the meat or dish.

I may eat vegetables grown in fertilizer, but I do not eat the fertilizer.
I may eat beef fed with ground-up beef by-products, but I don't eat the by-products directly and by the time I eat the beef, the by-products have been digested and much of it excreted.
My soda may come from a manure field, but I do not eat the manure.
I may shake hands with someone who didn't wash after using the toilet, but I don't lick my hand afterwards.

I don't understand my cruise cabin "air" being full of "gray water" -- that one has me stumped??

In any event, I do not eat shrimp that have not been deveined. And, I really won't eat it now that I have read all the unpleasant details on the Straight Dope.

I want to see all of you peel off the breading from your shrimp to see if they have been deveined. Because that's seriously the only way you're going to get the real answer to this question.

That's why I only eat butterflied (cut open and deveined) shrimp. If they bread that, then I'm good. Otherwise, no way, Jose. You can keep all that peel and eat crap, er stuff. I don't eat canned shrimp either if it hasn't been deveined and it usually isn't, especially the smaller shrimp. I also don't eat anything but grass-fed beef, but that's another story.:goodvibes

Was that a pun? :lmao::rotfl2:

Why yes, yes it was.

I am a believer that humans take things way too seriously and life is too short to worry about things.

I can't imagine the millions of people who have eaten non-deveined shrimp having a problem with it. I love shrimp and I honestly cannot tell you if the thing has been de-veined or not. But to each his/her own, I guess. I'm alive and kicking and don't plan to change my shrimp eating ways anytime soon.

Man! Are people that squeamish about a microgram of digested plankton? I hope you all don't eat Skittles, M&Ms, Reeses Pieces, Good-N-Plenty and any other food product coated in beetle secretion.
