Ok folks....got a question. For those of you that color your hair, could you help me out?

I am a natural redhead. My hair has a lot of gray.

Well...today at work, a veterinarian that joined our practice said something rude to me.

She said, " I don't mean to be rude, (while she looked at me) ,but I just pulled out my first gray hair this morning."

I asked her why she was looking at me.....even though I knew why.
My gray hair is really beginning to bug me.

Could anyone out there give me some advice?

Besides hurting the person that said that to me? LOL

I have a good sense of humor about myself, but I am looking pretty tired with this hair.
My sister is a redhead, too, and she colors her hair. Unfortunately, her colorist does a horrible job, not even close to our color.

HELP!

I have dark brown hair and generally use dark auburn on my hair to give auburn highlights. I always look at the side of the box to see what color my hair is "suppose" to be after using the color. If you wanted to just experiment, they do have some hair coloring that washes out in 6 washings.

Why not try one of the temporary dyes, that wash out in 6-8 washings to see if you like it or not? They're pretty easy to do!

Crystal, who hasnt seen her real hair color for years

Thanks. For the ones that wash out in 6 washings, if you like it and get a permanent color, is it the same or darker?

Lisa

look at her seriously and say....wait two or so years when you HIT 40 and then see her jump back ten feet.....oh well......I just had my hair colored this morning and I needed it bad......try to find a good professional hair dresser.....do not do it yourself......your hair may not agree with the color that is on the market.....some of the different types are very harsh to hair......good luck

After some rude comments that my hair was really getting gray by an idiot BIL and my DD saying that the top of my head looked like Grandma's I decided to start dying my hair at 39. I had light brown hair but have chaged to a light reddish brown color now and have used it for years. You might want to try the non-permannet ones first and then go to permanent color. It is easy to do at home and you will save a bundle on your hair stylist doing it....

She is 37, I am 40. I wanted to bop her one! LOL!

It just made me realize how bad it really is!!!

How on earth do I find someone to do this....
If I chose someone and they do a terrible job, I am stuck with it!!!!

AAAAHHHHH!!!!
I know there are more pressing things going on in the world, but it just hit me how old I look!!!

Hi Lisajl! I have always been a dishwater blonde, and since getting a lot of gray I use Loreal Excellence hair color. It covers gray wonderfully!! Can't help you with a red shade, but call the 800 # of the hair color company before you experiment. They will be a big help. Let us know how it turns out.:D

If you do it yourself, be prepared that the color will be darker than they show on the box. But it always fades and will lighten gradually.

in a couple of years when you hit 50.......I am in a mean mood tonight.....hahaha

I would recommend you find a really good colorist. Ask around to the people you know, or even if you see someone who's hair color you really like - ask them who their colorist is.

If you really want to do it yourself, I would recommend the Loreal Feria line. Unlike most color products that make the hair rather drab, the Feria color gives the hair more of a highlight effect, thus looking more natural, shiny and glossy. And they have some fabulous reds in this line, I know, because I've tried unsuccessfully to be a redhead a time or two. :teeth: The color looked great, it just didn't look great on me. :(

I'm 43 and starting to have enough gray that it shows. I consider myself lucky since my twin is completely salt & pepper now, she started going gray in her early 20's. Many in my family have gray but hard to know how much since most of them dye it.

I decided that I'd rather not have gray and found this site LorealParis there is a quiz that helps you choose a product and also shows colors. I've got dark blonde hair and decided Casting ColorSpa sounded good. It lasts for 28 shampoos so I wouldn't have to worry about root lines which was something I was concerned about. The results :p NOONE even noticed ;) and I can't see the grey anymore. I haven't decided whether it's a good thing they didn't notice. I quess I matched the haircolor almost too well, maybe next time I'll be brave enough to experment a little.

I was going to a professional and I got tired of her getting hair dye all over my face!...was a mess she made of me...I got Excellence too (it is permanent) but it is so easy now!...I love it!

try your best to match your original hair color...if you take someone with you they may be able to help with the matching part.(they have hair swatches) ...it does tend to go darker with the application...and you will need to leave it on longer if you have lots of grey.

Good luck to you and you'll feel so much better...

I'd give that girl a good bop too!...just wait..she'll have her day!!LOL

Lisa, I know you live somewhat near where I work and with professional color I had to tell you that I have had excellent luck going to Charles Penzone. They have very good and very professional people there and the best news is that they are comparable to everywhere else I have looked for price, but I feel like a queen when I go in. I go to the one at Dublin and go to a great person (I have her name written down at work, but I think it is similar to Evalina or something like that). There is also a Charles Penzone at Polaris that I hear is great (co-worker who lives that way goes there now). So if you are looking for a good professional colorist, I seriously recommend there.

I am almost sad that the last time I went they got my hair color back to natural (my choice). I might have to go in one more time just to make sure, but I will miss going there to do it in a way :)

Elaine!

We just went by the Charles Penzone place last night.

I had not been down by Polaris since the Penzone place had opened.

Yes, maybe I should have it done professionally.

I am very afraid of what I will end up doing to myself!!!

Thanks..
Lisa

I am a lt brown/blonde and would probably be completely gray if I stopped coloring (heredity).
Don't waste your good money on a salon coloring !! That can run you $50+ and the gray will show again in 6 weeks.

There are so many great "over the counter" coloring treatments now. Not like 10 years ago.
Loreal, Nutrisse, etc. are all good. I usually color my hair every 4 weeks and it costs me @$5. I've found one particular shade/brand that works best. You will too. I even let a few of my greys uncolored and get compliments on my "frosting".

By doing it myself, I can go darker in the winter and lighter in the summer. I like the control AND the $avings.

I second the call for using L'Oreal Excellence. I've been coloring my hair for years and it leaves my hair very healthy, shiny and pretty :D

I do have gray, but very few. I have colored it at home and at the salon. I like to stay pretty close to natural, but my natural is too dark. So I color it just a touch lighter and I get visible roots. The color puts a nice shine on my hair regardless so I break down and color it about every 2 months. My problem is I haven't been brave enough to try the permanent ones and my gray always shows through. Luckily, no one seems to notice, or they don't care.

I got my first grey hair at 12  A patch of white actually in the back of my head.
When I was 21 I started greying at my temples, so I took matters in my own hands and started to color it.

I've experimented a lot with different colors. My hair is very heavy and dark brown and it doesn't take color well. I've found Feria works the best for me as far as home color.
