College

I'm gonna be a freshman and I move in August 29th! My major is Food and Nutrition with a concentration in dietetics. (My concentration may or may not change) I have 16 credits for my first semester :headache:

my fun classes...
fundamentals of chemistry, intro to food & nutrition, nutrition w/ lab, new student seminar, college writing I, spanish II.
(I have so many classes related to my major because I joined a learning community...most of my schedule was picked for me)

How does everybody's campus handle parking? I need to go pick up my parking passes sometime this month before school starts. Our passes are free but if we break any of the parking rules we can't register again until we pay off our tickets.

i'm a sophomore at Lone Star University Park (it's a community college) we don't have to pay for parking and we all have to park in the parking garage. But my boyfriend goes to University of Houston and they make them pay 100 dollars each semester to cover their parking.

I think my campus would collectively revolt and tar and feather all workers at parking services if we had to pay for parking! Our campus is more than 95% commuters and finding a parking spot is just about murder. There are NOT enough spots in the the places that people want to park.

My best friend is a similar major, but she's more food science. Like she studies how to create food, kinda. lol it's hard to explain!

Parking is free for us, mostly because we only have one parking lot on main campus that is closed to students, unless they commute, and only open for professors. The parking lots for the dorms/apartments is also free, but you need to register your car with Pub Safe and you have to put a sticker in your window. If not, you get a ticket, which is like $70. It's stupid.

My friend goes to a big University and she also has to pay for parking. I don't know how much it is, but I'd be really upset if I had to pay.

First I have to turn in my last paper so I have sophomore standing to apply for a pass. Freshman aren't allowed to park on campus.

Then I have to shell out $354 to see if I can get a spot in the lot I want. If I can't, I'm refunded $350 (all but the $4 processing fee) and I have to try again with a different lot.

I hate that it's so expensive.

LOLLOLOL IM DYING HERE!!!
@ my school there are 3 levels of parking pass, the base one is $500, where you get to park miles away from everything, next one up is $700, you can park in the good lots, or for $1000 you can park in the underground parking.
it's highway frigging robbery.

and on top of paying $500 for the base pass, I've gotten 3 $25 tickets for parking in places that they didn't like.
AND there aren't enough spaces for everyone, so if you get to school past 11:00 am, forget about finding a spot remotely close to any building.
AND on top of that, I go to a commuter school. it truly is robbery.

i hate it. :headache::mad:

My school is the same way, but it's not quite that expensive. I think to get a freshman parking pass (so freshman can park by the dorms, but pretty much nowhere else on campus) is somewhere around $200, maybe $250. I think commuter (if you live off campus) and priority housing (if you are an upper-classmen living in the dorms) is the same, give or take some $$.

If you want a guaranteed parking spot - basically one that is only reserved for you - it's $889 for the year.

Parking is a nightmare. Living in the dorms and parking was horrible - it was VERY rare to get a close parking spot. Although, the last day of school I managed to get the closest parking spot to my dorm as possible, which made moving out MUCH easier. I still have no idea how I got so lucky :rotfl:

This year I'll be living in an apartment off campus. Thankfully, my apartment complex has a free shuttle to and from campus so I don't have to drive myself if I don't want to. Most of the apartment complexes have a shuttle too. There's also a free bus system, but I won't need to use that.

Also, they currently have one of the main parking lots completely torn up because they're installing some pipes or something in the ground. It's absolutely ridiculous.

My friend goes to another major university, and base parking there is $750 - you have to fight for a spot, park FAR away, and when there's a football game, all of the people with the base parking passes have to move their cars so people attending the football game can have their parking spots.

It's expensive and parking in general is crazy. Basically you can get a daily pass thats like $80 a semester, and park in any of the garages for the day, or park in overnight parking for the night. If you live in one of the dorms you can get a pass for that parking lot and like are like $120, but dorm parking lots are way out in the middle of no where so you basically walk everywhere anyways. Finally if you live in the towers (a dorm, but they are "special" so you get your own space) is like $400. Parking in general is a pain because there is not enough of it!!!!! Unless you get there at 6am you have to stalk people out to there cars to get a space. You need to get to the garage an hour before you need to park to find a space (not even an exaggeration...) I think they are building more garages though, it is so insane.

I wouldn't be paying that. Seriously.

Here's a map of my university with the parking lots. I can park in any green lot:
http://frank.mtsu.edu/~parking/map.pdf

And this is our bus map. There are three bus lines that run constantly around campus.
http://frank.mtsu.edu/~parking/busroutes.pdf

I usually park in that really big lot to the right of campus thats really far away from everything and ride the red bus line to the middle of campus, where my classes are.

Does anyone have anything like that on their campus? We don't have any covered parking/parking garages. There was a proposal for a parking garage many years ago but they decided to do busses instead. My campus is pretty old (1911) so they didn't want to destroy any of the clustered buldings in the middle since they're all very very old and everyone wanted parking in the middle of campus. So they did busses to the further lots out instead of building a parking garage.

Free parking but you just have to register your car and get a sticker. The parking near the dorms isn't bad (except for my dorm... there's a tiny lot next to it and then behind it is the student center parking) but on the academic side of campus parking is a nightmare.

I'm taking my car for the first time this year (I'm a senior) and I have vowed that because I live SO close to the academic side of campus (I'm in the very first dorm closest to the student center, which is connected over the turnpike by a bridge to the academic side) that I will NEVER under any circumstances, drive to class haha. Drive to the gym at the back of the campus? Yes, drive to class? No lol

My school is teeny tiny (main campus is one city block...for real) so I really have no need to drive. Now this year, I'm living in an on-campus apartment, which is a hike to main campus. So I'll drive to class this year, but only because I don't wanna be walking around the area by myself. It's in the middle of a city, that's not the nicest of places.

But the main reason I have my car up on campus is to do stuff off campus, such as go to the mall, movies, etc. There's not much social life on my campus, especially during the day. So if you don't have a car, you're basically sitting in your room with your friends bored all day, until night comes and the parties start.

Scotland got their exam results today. I'm not sure what type of exam it was though. I still have to wait until 19th August to get mine. I just want them now!

Thanks for all the advice!

I have another question, do any of you actually use the $100 calculators in college? You know the ones with all the graphs and everything or is that even necessary in your math classes? Or is that for those who are generally going for a math major?

YES.

I've had one since seventh grade and I will never use another calculator. My TI-89 is amazing and even though I don't take math anymore, it never comes out of my purse. I can do so many things with it that you just cannot do with a regular one. The bigger screen is a major plus too because you can see everything you just did, to check for syntax errors.

I never have to take another math class as long as I live, but I still use it every week when i go grocery shopping. I love that calculator. It is a major investment that I am very pleased with.

I agree with Shelby, YES!!
My college math classes required a graphing calculator. College math goes into a lot more detail than high school math classes do. So you will definitely need it.

Alright, thanks! I was looking through a staples ad and saw one so figured I'd ask. I have owned a $12 one for the past 4 years and love it, but didn't know how much detail that college math would get into.
