College

Alright, thanks! I was looking through a staples ad and saw one so figured I'd ask. I have owned a $12 one for the past 4 years and love it, but didn't know how much detail that college math would get into.

it definitely depends on what level you take, but MOST levels that aren't remedial will get into something that requires a scientific graphing calculator.

eta you will do math in a lot of your classes. most science will require at least some form of calculation. if you do any kind of statistical or data class, you'll need to calculate. i've even used mine in my english classes when i was using a numerical arguement in my favor. i had to create and prove my calcuation. (it was about textbook costs and i argued that my school could, with very little effort, supply students with free text books like public schools do)

I miss college. What a tease. 6 weeks of pre-college and now I have to go back to high school.

I see.

We had to use calculators a lot in our chemistry 2 class, so I can understand needing it for other classes. Thanks for the info.

Mmk so after a lot of research I've narrowed it down to:

UPenn as my reach
Widener and La Salle as my 50/50
PSU and Temple as my safety

La Salle has a lot going for me right now so I'm really looking at that. But I'm doing college visits in a month. What should I look for when I go visit these colleges?

well are you going to be living on campus?
ask about the dorms (none of my college visits showed us the dorms, but you can ask about dorm avalibility, what students usually do as to living arrangements, etc)
you should ask about meal plans, are they required?
you should ask about your major, what does the program offer/require (and compare to other schools to see the difference)
ask about extra curriculars if you're interested in those.
you should bring your parents if you want to. its good to have a second set of ears
you should visit the financial aid office and see what you should be doing as to financial aid applications
you should check out what kind of area the college is in, like a major city or rural area.
if you get a chance, schedule a visit with the head of the department you're majoring in and talk to them one-on-one.

thats all i can think of right now.

I agree with all of the above. I would just add:
Ask about the social life on campus. That's really important because you will have a good amount of down time at college, and if there's not social life, then you need to be fully prepared to find your own entertainment. At all of your schools, since they are all big, you won't really have a problem with entertainment.

12 days until I move in! I'm going dorm-shopping tomorrow (mainly for organizers, I got my bedding already :) )

Thanks for all the advice!

I have another question, do any of you actually use the $100 calculators in college? You know the ones with all the graphs and everything or is that even necessary in your math classes? Or is that for those who are generally going for a math major?

Not really. we werent allowed to use calculators in precal or in calculus and i did just fine. i used it in stats tho, but u will really need if it u are taking chem and physics.

Dorm shopping is my absolute favorite!
I need to get an egg crate mattress pad for my bed. My old one was pretty much flat..lol

You should get a memory foam mattress topper! I'm not sure if its allowed in the dorms (I don't know the rules) but you can get them just a few inches thick and its like sleeping on a real memory foam mattress. They're not too expensive either at walmart.

They are amazing! I didn't know they sell them at Walmart though...

I got mine at Target.

And to whomever originally said they needed a topper, GET A MEMORY FOAM ONE. I used an egg crate style topper for the first half of the year and by Christmas break, it was completely not poofy in spots. I got a memory foam (1.5 inch thick) for second semester and the difference was noticeably better!

16 days until I move back in! I still consider my dorm home. Whenever I'm at my house for the weekend, I tell people I'm going back "home" on Sunday night!

I really want one. I have a queen size bed tough and they're pretty expensive if you're buying for anything bigger than a twin.

My school has twin XL beds though, do they come in that size?
My egg crate lasted for the last 2 years, and I never had a problem with uncomfortable sleep. I don't get the cheapo ones though. My mom gets them at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and they're like $30, but we use the 30% off coupons.

Mine was a bit short, but I made sure it went all the way to the foot of the bed, since I didn't care if it wasn't at the top, since that's where my pillow was. there was even some overlap. My mom got mine on sale at Target for $35. It was a bit more than she wanted to pay, but oh man, was it worth it.

A friend of mine had the actual TempurPedic one, but it came only in Twin sizes, so he had a gap too. But yeah, it was sooooo comfy!! If I laid on his bed, I was out! lol

Ehhh I start so soon. :/ I'm excited & nervous...I don't know what to expect. I enrolled a couple weeks ago & everything is pretty much set. My days are pretty easy I would say, I have 2 classes Mondays & Wednesdays from 1:30-6 & one class on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9-10:35 am & I have Fridays off so it'll be nice I guess.

10 more days... Everything's set :) My bed is pink-themed with pink and white polka-dot bed-spread, peace sheets and flower sheets. My dorm room is going to be pink-white-and brown themed. I got a new phone to replace my old one that was not working, and I got a bunch of hair stuff, and new clothes! We got a lot of good deals on towel stuff at Kohls (When they have a sale, they have a sale). It was a fun-filled packed day, and I think I'm ready for college!

Dorm shopping is always the best! :rotfl:

I went to IKEA last weekend to get some last-minute stuff, specifically sheets (my dorm bed was twin size, and the bed in my apartment is a full/double size bed). They didn't have a good sheet selection, so we went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond where I got two 500 thread-count complete sheet sets for half price :woohoo: :cloud9:

My room is definitely blue and green themed... didn't plan it that way, but that's how it turned out  . Perhaps I shall post pictures once I get situated, which should be sometime this weekend :woohoo:

10 more days to me too!
This weekend I'm going out and getting all the last minute stuff.
I got a new bedding set. It's dark purple, regular purple, and white. It's kinda like a polka dot pattern. My theme for my room is gonna be like old Hollywood. I have a bunch of old black and white pictures and posters. I'm so pumped. These 10 days need to speed up!! :)
