Cold and curious - what is your thermostat set to when you are home?

Daytime is 64, nighttime/at work is 60. We live in NY and oil is SO expensive right now! We fill our tank maybe 3 times a year.

If we have people over, sometimes I crank it to 68. We don't have central AC, so our costs in the summer are minimal (just a wall unit that runs on electric).

This year we've kept it at 70. Usually, it's at 68-69 but it's been such a cold winter, I just left it at 70. I am usually cold, even with a sweatshirt & slippers and throws on the couch. I blame my thyroid! :lmao: In any case, it's comfortable and I hate being cold inside when it's so cold outside. Our bill is not unreasonable so until it becomes an issue, I'm keeping it warm!

63 overnight and when everyone is at work, I'll usually put it up to 67 or 68 for a few hours while we're home in the evening or on weekends. I can't remember the last time I turned the heat up above 70. I'm literally not sure I ever have. We live in Minnesota so we're pretty used to thick socks, layers and blankets.

My husband had the woodstove cranking and it hit 78 degrees in here earlier, I had to open the door to let some of the heat out! Now it's a comfy 74 with shorts and tshirt on!

:thumbsup2

We put a wood stove in 2 winters ago and it has been AMAZING. We do have easy access to wood, thankfully. I used to keep my all electric (expensive!) heated home at 62 and use a space heater in the kids room at night so they didn't turn in to ice cubes.

Being cold makes me miserable. I'll gladly pay the bill to keep the house at 73+. It's a big bill because we live in New Hampshire but I'd give up vacations before I'd be cold and miserable every day! Even with the house this warm, I'm cold. I need to wear a sweatshirt. It could be the cathedral ceiling in the family room although we have a separate heater in there. The only time I was ever warm was when I was pregnant and I refuse to gain weight to lower my heat. Ha. Ha. The good thing is we save money in the summer because we don't have central A/C and we can tolerate the house being hot and it gets hot. It it's 90 degrees outside, it's pretty close inside. :rotfl2:

This is exactly me too! Being cold makes me miserable. Our indoor temps are in the low 70's day and night, all winter. The thermostat is usually set on 74, but if we have company, I turn it down to 71 since the family room warms up quickly when its full of people.

In the summers, I refuse to turn on the a/c. We have so few months of the year when I can have the windows open and have fresh air, that I will not close up the house when it's sunny and hot. We have window fans and the heat doesn't bother me. I figure that the money I save by not using the a/c, can go towards keeping me warm in the winter!

I swear temperature is a hotter topic (no pun intended) than politics. :surfweb:
We'd have all the windows open in the winter if it was 70 here, and closed during the summer.

Sort of like on the cruise line forum, people complain about the water at Castaway Cay being freezing when the record low temperature is 72, and out here in California, people start using their pools when the water hit's 68, and all the gyms keep their outdoor pools at 75.

Sorry, I guess I didn't phrase my post very well. We live in PA and it's horribly cold all winter. I meant that it's in the low 70's INDOORS at my house all winter! I edited my post so it made more sense!

Usually 70, and I still sit around with a blanket a lot of the time. I despise being cold more than anything.

Haha, I agree...and the thing is no one is right or wrong. Comfort is subjective to each person. ::yes::

Wow...you guys are tough!! We have natural gas heat which is very affordable right now, but my family is always warm...we keep it at 70 and I'm cold...sometimes push it up to 71 or 72 if no one's around. Oil heat at work but my office is the coldest...so I tend to turn the thermostat up to 73 or 74 just to make my office warmer... perhaps I should be down south!!

Same here. Fluctuates between 68-72.

We've been keeping the temp set at 68 but I am tempted to crank it up just a little . . . I should say we are not used to weather this cold for this long - which also means our house is not built for these temps either . . .

We keep it at 66. We did buy a space heater because I get cold when i am just sitting, this sub 0 weather we have had lately is just too much.

I agree! Life is too short to be cold. I keep it at 74 during the day and 71 at night or if no one is home. Actually our gas bill wasn't that much higher, we expected worse. The house is 3000 square ft but with catherdal ceilings so it seems cool even at 74.

OMG I would be miserable if my house was 74 degrees! I keep it at 62 summer/ winter whatever...that is where I am comfortable. I would be sweating and not able to sleep if it was 74 degrees!

We keep it between 68 - 70. Have to use a blanket on the couch because the window behind it is very drafty. One of these years we will replace the window.

I hate being cold. I keep mine on 71-72 and am still usually in a sweatshirt with a blanket. Some of you are hardcore with mid 60's. When my gas bill comes in, I wish I could be that hardcore too, but I'd be wearing a hat, gloves, and big coat at that temp.

We set our temp at 65 degrees during the day and 62 degrees at night.

When we are home, 70. If the windchill is below 0, 72. Our family room and kitchen face the northeast and it can get cold when the wind is howling.

While we are gone during the day, 68.

While we sleep, 65.
