Cold and curious - what is your thermostat set to when you are home?

We have electric heat and I keep it on 71° all the time all year long. I live in the south and that means there is a ceiling fan in each room but the kitchen. I don't think the one in my bedroom ever gets turned off.

Electric ceiling heat so its 68

When burning wood I shoot for 65 in the bedrooms at one end of house which makes living room 70 easily and back of house where stove is mid 70's

We have a pellet stove and for the most part it keeps the house at 73 or so. We have to manually adjust the feed level and this can effect the temp. Too slow and the temp hovers in the high 60s too fast and the temp will quickly reach 78.

BTW - for those of you who keep your house temp below 60 be very, very careful, especially if you have a forced hot water or steam heating system. (I know most parts of the country have forced hot air). When the system's temp is kept below 60 there is a high risk that the system won't run frequently enough to keep the water in the pipes from freezing, especially if the outside temps are below 20 degrees. And if the power goes out the temp in the house drops too quickly to below freezing. I can't tell you how many calls DH has to go on for busted pipes this winter and how many of those people whose houses he went out to kept their house in the 55 degree range.

digital stat.. 62 when not a home. 68 when home. this is about hour north of New york city..

saves a ton of money and we are fine

65 when we're home. We just throw on an extra layer; sweater, sweatshirt, undershirt. Even at that our gas bill is high, so I'll live with the layers. I'd rather spend my money on vacations and special dinners. :)

We have gas heat and it's been below zero here most every day for the past two months.

Keeping it at 66 during the day and 64 at night.

We previously kept it at 68 all the time but we didn't really want a $200/month heating bill.

Try to keep it at 63-64 but will up,it a bit when the grand babies are visiting. Oil is running $3.89 gallon currently. Only getting as needed, love winter but can't wait until I do t have to buy oil for a little while!

I have been setting it at 68 most of the winter, to try and keep the heating bill down, but I swear, this deep freeze weather has chilled me to my bones. I just can't get warm. At 68, I was wearing big heavy sweater, and a blanket over my lap just to watch TV. A few days ago, I broke down and "cranked" it up to 70. I wish my house had a fireplace. If it did, I'd be spending most my time camped out in front of it.

To those of you who can handle it in the low 60's, more power to you. I'd need a snowsuit to keep warm at that temperature!

I keep it between 67-73 most of the year. I cannot make myself get things done of I am too warm or too cold. I also can't get much done wearing a sweatshirt. It's weird, I know, but I cannot stand wearing a sweatshirt while cleaning or doing other projects. I want to be comfortable in my home, I will also scrimp elsewhere. I wish I could feel comfy at 62, but I don't see it happening.

Anywhere between 70-73. It's at 73 right now, I have 2 layers of clothes on, and I have a robe on, and still freezing. It drives my husband crazy that I'm ALWAYS cold.

We keep it at 69-70 during the day and I still wear a jacket full time. 63 at night. I would have to wear a heavy coat if I kept it in the low 60s. I'm very thrifty on everything else but I refuse to freeze in my own home.

77 in summer for ac to kick on, 75 in winter for heater to kick on. Floridian.....thin blood.

Haha, I agree...and the thing is no one is right or wrong. Comfort is subjective to each person. ::yes::

Yeah, the temperature and light level debate comes up at work from time to time. No real answer on temperature.
There is a minimum standard for lighting though.....which at my last employer upset the folks who went to HR complaining it was too bright. They brought in a guy with a light meter, and discovered we didn't have enough light. :stir:

We keep our heater set at 63 in the winter and 73 in the summer. We're fine at 63 degrees and I cook when I go to anyone else's house. My mom keeps her heater at 77 and we never stay there overnight because of it!

65 and we wear layers if it's cold. If I have company I will occasionally crank it up to 67/68.

Yup.

65 while we're home is our default. 60 at night and when we're gone all day. The kids and I don't stop moving all day, apart from an hour of TV time on the weekends, which is spent underneath blankets. DH gets a little chilly, but that's just a sign that he should do some chores around the house too, LOL.

If we catch a chill, we'll turn it up, and DH and I use the gas fireplace at night once the kids are in bed and we're watching TV.

I don't mind turning it up if one of us is cold, but the default is nice and low.

68 during day,70 in evening,58 overnight..... and I am cold with layers during the day anyway
