coffee-my 10 year old wants some

arminnie ...thanks for the link. Right now I have a huge amount of bagged tea I need to go through. I received my ordered of 4 boxes of 16 bags each of Rooibos chai and Licorice detox. Plus I several other bagged teas a friend just gave me when she gave up caffine. I think I will be ordering form them when my stock runs low. I usually end up cutting bags open and maiking it in my french press anyway.

Hi

My dd is 10 and whenever I let her have coffee, she's up all night
it makes her act like speed...so I don't let her have the coffee coolat's anymore for DD!;-(
I do let her have cofee ice cream if it's early enough in the day, otherwise we are all kept up at night with her repeating, I can't sleep....

Too much caffeine for her system!;-(

Everyone's different...:sunny:

Peg2001, you must be from South Carolina! Down here, they put sweet iced tea (is there any other kind?) in the baby bottles!:hyper:

Close, the family has Alabama roots. I used to think it was so funny to watch my cousin's kids barely toddling but carrying their sippy cups of sweet tea with them everywhere they went.

My oldest DD started drinking sweet tea at age 2, when she was very sick and her doctor told us to push liquids, ANYTHING that she was willing to drink. Funny enough, she would drink more sweet tea than anything else.

I can't remember how old I was. My kids want it, but I rarely ever give them any, the get hyped up enough from coke cola.

A friend of mine gives her grandkids some, but she milks it down a lot. She's says it's not really cafe au lait, it's more like milk with a little bit of coffee flavoring.:teeth:

I hate coffee, but DH started drinking it when he was really young. My 13 yo DS is allowed to have it. He couldn't wait to be old enough to drink it, and now that he can have it, he doesn't like it very well. :teeth: He does like mochas, though, and has one once in a great while. My 10 yo DS LOVES coffee, and has it once in awhile. He is "officially" allowed to have it at 13, as well as my 2 other boys.

I found this part of the article very interesting
These megadrinks can pack a wallop equal to three cups of strong coffee--all bombarding a body that may be one-half or two-thirds adult size. And kids are eagerly reaching for the aggressively marketed new drinks that are at or near the legal limit for added caffeine (which is 6 milligrams per ounce) such as Coca-Cola's Surge (51 milligrams in 12 ounces), Pepsi-Cola's Josta (58), Jolt (72), the caffeinated herbal drink XTC (70), and others.

this article A sip into dangerous territory is even more interesting...this study cites the possible link between caffeine use and ADHD

It is this exact "case of the jitters" that prompts some researchers to ask if children's caffeine abuse could be a harbinger of ADHD. Mark Stein, PhD, of Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., researches the connection between caffeine and ADHD. Stein suggests that caffeine and ADHD may be related through their effects on sleep. Although their symptoms differ, he says, "caffeine is a stimulant that affects sleep, and chronic sleep deprivation can cause inattention, and potentially could be ADHD."

The link does not work.

Most medications used to treat ADD are stimulants. So either the medications that are treating ADD are causing it, or caffine does not cause ADD. As many have stated here, before the wide availability of ADD meds Dr's would often tell the parents to given coffee a child diagnoised with ADD.

A sip into dangerous territory

the link should work now

I saw what the other posters said about caffeine and ADHD....I'm not agreeing with or diagreeing with anyone, just posting interesting reading..

my take on the article is that they think it's possible that caffeine consumption lead to the ADHD in the first place and caffeine helps with it becase it's like getting a fix when suffering withdrawal..
