coffee-my 10 year old wants some

I can't remember how young I was that's how young I was.

I to got my taste for coffee from my grandparents. I remember walking on the chilly floor and my grandmother singing there she is miss america and handing me some coffee.

I had the milk and sugar kind as well.

Now days I drink decaf and my son drinks coffee but only at my grandmothers and I've made sure it's decaf. I just like seeing the whole production through grown up eyes. *note- she doesn't sing miss america to him she says there's my superman!

I came from a family that weaned babies from breast to iced tea so I guess caffeine wasn't a real concern.

My family too!

I have also heard and tried Coffee and Mountain Dew for those with ADHD, and yes it does work.

My kids have all tried coffee at various ages, but it didn't interest them any, I drink mine with non dairy creamer only so they thought it was boring.

My niece started drinking coffee when she was about 2 years old. She kept trying to get at my cup and I kept telling her she wouldn't like it until one day we were "fighting" over the cup. So I gave her a taste, she's not going to like it anyway right.
NOT--I created a monster, she loved it. Kept drinking and wouldn't stop, now I'm "fighting" with her trying to get the cup back. Good thing I could flip the lid closed so it wouldn't spill on us.

My DD7 loves coffee with lots of cream and sugar. It is her special treat on the weekends.

She also loves Breyer's Coffee ice cream.

That's for now because we're both on a strict regimen. I've found that Michael will NOT drink it if he has an alternative so I just don't have it around. Now he craves it and drinks it all the time. And BTW, he's dropped two sizes since January! :teeth:

Thanks for the info on stimulants working on ADHD kids, this is amazing to me. I say if it works, do it!

My oldest probably started drinking regular coffee around 12 or 13. I came home from work in the morning and my coffee maker was on the counter. (I don't drink coffee at all and neither does DH) Her girlfriend was staying overnight and she drank it so of course Amanda had to try it. The she started mixing hot cocoa with it, so I bought the Swiss Mocha stuff for her. The other 2 girls don't really drink it. Catie will drink the stuff from Starbucks...some kind of mocha latte thingie. Melissa likes the cold cappachinos (sp?) I drink decaf hot tea and decaf ice tea.

I don't see any problems with the older 2 from caffiene or sugars...but Melissa will get a bit hyper if she has too much chocolate.

6 DD gets a little coffee with a lot of milk and maybe a dash us sugar. Usually it is only when we are out shopping and a store has free samples. She drinks herbal hot tea at home fairly often.

14 DS drinks coffee more often than I do.Maybe 3 times a week. He drinks it with just a little cream (like I do). No sugar like soda, and I believe coffee has less caffeine than most sodas.

One rule we do have with DS is only one cup of regular coffee a day then he has to switch to de-caf. When he was 12 we were out to eat in Michigan with DH's family. The waitress was a classmate of one of or nephews. She could not believe DS liked coffee and laughed every time she had to refill his cup of de-caf.

I remember my first cup of coffee, but I don't remember how old I was. I didn't sleep that night!

DS recently stirred my vanilla latte at Starbucks, then stuck the stir stick in his mouth for the foam. Now he wants me to buy him a latte whenever we stop! Nope! He'll be 11 on Monday. ;)

Aside from an occasional (one per month, if that) cup of Wawa flavored coffee (fellow NJ/PA DISers will know what I'm talking about), I don't drink coffee. I'm 23.

I do agree that 10 is to young to be drinking coffee on a regular basis, but to have a (very) occassional cup is okay. Everything in moderation, right?

I was younger than 10 when I started. It was probably half coffee/half milk. I don't remember having it every day, but I don't remember every being told I couldn't have it. I don't remember ever having a problem getting to sleep after coffee until I was much older.

Congratulations to Michael! That is fabulous progress!

Jipsy, that is a sweet story. I remember my GF face feeling like that too.:( Gosh, I miss him.

I don't have an answer 'cause I still don't drink it (I'm a tea bag, myself)

Ditto. I may have a cup of coffee in a restaurant once or twice a year, but I love my tea - prefer it loose though as opposed to teabags. I worked in London when I was 24 so I think that's where the tea thing started.

I remember drinking tea and milk at "tea parties" when I was a little girl. Started drinking coffee-black, no sugar, when I was about 16 because it was the cheapest thing to order so you could hang out in the coffee shop for hours-free refills! (Up until the coffee shortage-remember that Baby Boomers?) My kids started asking for it in the local gourmet grocery where they had free samples of their coffee. Gave them a small "dixie" cup with about a tablespoon of coffee, a tsp of sugar, and the rest with cream. They slurped it up at 2 yrs old. Now on occasion they ask for "coffee milk" in the morning, and since they are terrible eaters in the a.m., I am glad to give them a couple of tablespoons of coffee mixed with a cup of milk in order to get something into their tummies before school.

I have read that stimulants help with ADD, that's great that coffee and Mountain Dew can work, too. I also read that sugar has NOTHING to do with kids bouncing off the walls, and that bit about coffee stunting your growth is a bunch of baloney.. I am 5'2", but my mom is only 5', and I'm pretty sure her mother was shorter than that. So if anything, all that coffee made me grow......:teeth:

I still only drink coffee every once in a while. . .maybe once a month or two. My kids (4 and 7) have not expressed an interest in trying it. . .and their iced tea is decaf. ;)

Peg2001, you must be from South Carolina! Down here, they put sweet iced tea (is there any other kind?) in the baby bottles!:hyper:

prefer it loose though as opposed to teabags.

I love using a french press to make loose leave tea, but it is hard to find loose tea around here except for the standard english selections that have caffine. I had a source for organic red raspberry leave, but they no longer carry it.

I might have been 12? I didn't like it until I was 15 or so. But my daughter has always loved coffee. I caught her sneaking sips of mine when she was four... now I just give her a little in warm milk and she loves it. My son is a tea drinker and has loved tea since he was a little guy, maybe two or so.
My doctor told me to give my son coffee for his allergies/asthma.

me three. i was drinking probably a gallon of sun tea a day (in the summer) from age 10 onwards. :p

i've been drinking coffee pretty regularly since about age 12, and i doubt it stunted my growth (i am 5'10"). :)

I order from Upton Teas. They have a really great selection and the quality is great - very fresh. They are very reputable.

I tried coffee around 10 and I can't stand the stuff. I will drink hot coca.

I am trying to wing myself from caffine period so I buying sprite and juice to drink now.

Mom loves coffee.
