Codes, upgrades, etc?

I was wondering how it works with codes, upgrades, etc when booking your DW trip?

I am turning the wheels in my head for a trip in Dec. of 09' (I use my travel agrent) and I read so much about how people score free room upgrades and sometimes free dining at times when they are calling and booking their trips or just at random times in general. Is it just luck or should I be keeping my eye out for certain things and such?
