O.K. This is not earth shattering but

I have a co-worker with whom I am on friendly terms. She asked me for one of my sick days since her recent illness used up all of her sick pay. What she failed to tell me is that she still had 3 personal days left that she is still planning to take off of work.

Would you let it slide or take the day back?

I'd take it back. I never heard of sick days being transferable though.

I would take it back too. That is really too much.

Our hospital is just about to institute a policy that allows us to "donate" sick time to others. They have to be approved by a committee so it would not be as easy as this one sounds.

Boy, what a slimy thing to do!!

*I* would let it slide this time! But you can bet I'd never do *anything* for this person again!!!

I was running out to grab some lunch one day, I asked a co-worker (my employee actually) if I could get her anything (I was getting a salad that she loved). She said, she'd love one but didn't have any $$$ that day. I told her not to worry, she can pay me back the next day. I never saw the $$$. She "screwed" someone elso this way too.......

I'd ask for the day back. I've never heard of a company allowing something like this. Would your co-worker just not get paid for the extra sick day or would it result in disciplinary action?

No repurcussions just no pay. I have given up several sick days to co-workers but I must say that I don't think I will again

Are her other days being used for something that can't be changed...dr appt?

My Mom was given a lot of 'donated' days when she was diagnosed with cancer. It was a life saver for us. She was able to not worry about her time off. I will say that she took a trip to Disney and everyone at her work fully supported it, even though she was using their sick time. She had never taken a vacation and it would be her last one.

I am not sure how I would handle it. What did she need your sick day for? Is it just for an in case situation?

She has no Doctor Appointments just wants the days off for extended weekends. This co-worker asks for sick days every year. She has heatlth issues. I gave her days last year, as did many of my co-workers. Never even a card saying thank you. She was given over 15 days . Unfortunately this has made many stand back and rethink their generosity to others.

I've never heard of this policy, however the old saying goes "burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me".

Ya know, this "co-worker" is going to "ruin" this for everybody. I'm sure there are good, honest people who really need these donated days and are very grateful. One "bad apple" may make your HR dept eliminated it for all.......

The company that I used to work for let some workers donate their sick days to another worker who was ill.
And yes if she had days she could have used and didnt let you know I would take the day back or at the very least say something to her.

Look at it this way. Do you get paid out at the end of the year for unused days?

One sick day would probably cover the cost of 2 one day passes to WDW, depending on how much you get paid. I'm all for being nice to coworkers, but you're giving her ALOT of money.

If she were really sick or terminal, that's different. It sounds like she should just take unpaid days. Maybe if she doesn't get paid, she'll think twice about "being sick".

In a situation like this I'd donate sick time in a heartbeat even if it meant having to take unpaid time myself later on. However, in most situations I don't think it's right for someone to ask a coworker to donate a day if they have vacation/personal days they could use. I can't count the number of personal/vacation days I've had to use when DD was sick rather than take a sick day.

I guess my question would be...why did you do it again if you knew she did this last year? If her days left are just for extended weekends I would take the day back.

our policy at work is that they can be donated, however they are donated on a anonomous basis...and are usually only allowed for someone with long-term or terminal illness. They also have to go though a committee to approved....

You can't just 'give' someone a day because they used up theres...and also- the ones donated to not get used until all of the regular sick/personal/vacation hours that employee has are used...they use the donated ones last.

I am just curious. Do your sick days start at the beginning of the year or start date? if beginning of the year then you should have thought twice about it cause you may need them for your self or if you have kids if they get sick. I am just stingy I would never get rid of them. let alone ask to use someone elses.Thats just plain rude.

sick day accumulate year to year. I assumed that she took all her personals. I told her that I could not donate my days and she is a bit upset with me. All of a sudden she says that the reason she has taken 3 Fridays in May is for Drs. Appt. But I remember having a conversation when she asked for those days off that it was just to have extended weekends. Now if she asked for midweek days off that would not make me so doubtful. All I know for sure is that I feel like a cad saying no, but still think not giving up those days was the right thing.

What happens to the personal day you gave her? I assume it's gone now.

Unfortunately I guess she really used you and others in your office for her own good.
