CNN Money's List of "8 Least Evil Banks"

theres actually 8? Sorry to be cynical, I guess I need Bailey's Savings and Loan from It's a Wonderful Life.

Don't look for miracles with any of them though, this is sort of like
making a list of the tallest midgets, or least grey elephants.....

Drew :)

We LOVE USAA, they're an awesome financial institution IMO

I concur. Ally and Alliant are excellent, too. I'll soon be splitting my accounts across a few credit unions (Alliant being one of them).

buh-bye banks.

good for these eight, but we quit banks too.

DH moved us back to a credit union (I never wanted to leave) just recently.

Our bank is on this list and I'm quite happy with them. I certaintly don't think they are "evil."

I've got 2 on the list -- both are top-notch financial organizations (and one of the two I would put over nearly every credit union in the U.S.).

The list is here.

Interesting.

Our student loans are held by one of those banks and our larger savings accounts are with another.

We use Chase for our credit cards, car loans, mortgage and day to day banking. I can't imagine doing that with an online banking company but I *hate* doing stuff like that over the phone.

And the majority of these banks are online banks, and most of the rest, for most people, are as good as online banks, in terms of how they'd have to do business with them. Another instance where newer is better than older.

I just had the most awful experience trying to refinance my mortgage with PNC. They dragged the process out for months, the loan officer lied repeatedly, and eventually, I had to get the loan origination fee (charged to my credit card) back from my credit card company.

It was a nightmare - and I thought PNC was very evil.

I'm with 3 of them - USAA, ING and Capital One. I'm still not sold on Capital One since I'm with them as a buy out of my original bank but so far they are good. As for the other 2, they are awesome and I'd put them above the credit union we left for charging us an account maintenance fee.

It just goes to show how little our own personal experiences have to do with how things are in general. For example, I have had fantastic experiences with Bank of America, which wasn't on the list. The fact that BoA isn't on the list doesn't reverse the good experiences I've had.

I think for a lot of things like this, it is really a matter of compatibility. Many banks on that list are going to be "evil" for some potential customers, for the very same reasons that they're "not evil" for other people.

We bank at a "small local" bank, and we love it.

A human always answers the phone. They call you by name when you walk in. We have free checking, free ATMs, free checks, great mortgage rates. I could go on and on. I don't think they will ever sell out to the big boys (fingers crossed).

I hope you are right. My DH currently works and I previously worked for banks. My last one was the Federal Reserve. Smaller banks were constantly being sold to larger banks. We both worked for a smaller bank and it was sold to a larger bank, and then sold to an even larger bank. It's hard to find small banks that stick around anymore, especially in Ohio. Heck, our large bank (National City) got itself is so much trouble, it's now PNC. Credit Unions are about the only safe bet not to be sold.
