Clothing Drive?

We just had a garage sale last week and had lots of things left over and would like to donate them to hurricane survivors. Does anyone know of a way to start a clothing drive or how to get clothes to the hurricane survivors? I know they have got to be in desperate need for clothes and it would be a good reason to finally get around to cleaning out my closet! I won't be able to do anything until after we get back from WDW, but I know the need will still be there or maybe somebody else will be able to get clothing drive together while I am gone. Any input would be grately appreciated.

I would check with your local Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, etc. - they already have the organizational structure to take your local donation and route it to the areas of greatest need.

They really have no way to clean, sort, and store used clothing, and are not requesting it for donations. The only exception is woman's clothing sized 24+. They will take donations of new, in the package or with tags on underwear and socks.

The news showed Reunion Arena last night and there are MOUNTAINS of clothing, shoes, toys, etc. They are requesting that people donate their items to the Salvation Army. I agree that it would be difficult to keep up with personal belongings while in a shelter, especially since Texas is still in the process of shifting people around to other states.

Our PTA sent an e-mail asking for uniforms in case we get new students from NO, but those will be put to use no matter what because we have lots of low income students who can't afford uniforms. We keep a "uniform closet" year round.
