DS 5.5 is still wearing pullups at night. He isn't nighttime trained. speaking with his pedi - he believes it may not come till he is 7 or 8 yr old. We've tried waking him up around 11pm to use the bathroom but the started about 2 wks worth of nightterrors. Plus he would still wet sometime after that too.

DS is on the autism spectrum and non verbal at times. He says the pull up makes him itchy. He is always an itchy child and I think they irrate him more.

He is just about 40 pounds and slim built.

Does anyone know where I can find a cloth overnight diaper that will fit him? I know how to sew and would not mind making them myself but honestly do not know the first thing about cloth diapering.

He is our 5th dc and first not to be nighttime trained by 3 or 4.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you on the diapers. Ds was a sound sleeper and I had to limit fluids after 6pm, take him to the bathroom before bed, and once more before I went to bed. No night terrors here so that mostly worked. What I do want to recommend (though you've probably already thought of it) is an excellent waterproof mattress cover. I covered that with a cut up garbage bag as well and then made the bed over the whole thing. Then if there was an accident, just the pyjamas and bedding needed washing instead of the dreaded cleaning of the mattress.

have you thought of doing a bed alarm? if your worried about sounds with his autism, maybe try doing a chime or vibration to wake him up since he is older. you can do cloth diapers in the meantime, but trying to help him with night time dryness would be helpful too. vibration might be non-invasive and not scary, but might help him wake up when wet - and i think that the cloth diapering might help too because it will feel wet and help him also know to wake up. sometimes, manufactured diapers wick away too much moisture and help them stay asleep longer because they stay dryer longer. just some thoughts. good luck!

Our younger dd has ASD too, and was well past 4 when she finally toilet trained, so I know where you're coming from!!

Instead of cloth diapers, how about those thick underwear/training pants with the extra fabric in front? Your son sounds very slim, and I bet you could find some in his size online.

Try the diaper swappers thread. It is a whole message board like the dis dedicated to cloth diapers. There are many people cloth diapering older children.

Just wanted to let u know that my son is 9 years old on the spectrum & he wets every nite-multiple times-before I even check on him before I go to bed at 10, he is usually wet. But it doesn't bother him at all-even as a baby, he would stay wet/poopy pants all day and it was fine with him. We've tried everything-aside from medicating-but we r trying to avoid that and just going to ride it out-so to say. Sorry I can't help with the diapering, but just wanted to give u a little "I can relate!!"

Op here.

Thank you to all that replied., I have been looking into some of the links posted. Also contacted the lady that runs the kids consignment sale bc she had a lady that had cloth diaper table.

I'm ok with him still in a pull up type bottom. But really would like to switch him to a bottom that does not irritate him. He is not a great sleeper to begin with lately. I've been reminding him that if he wakes up during the night to go potty and climb back under his blanket. Dh on the other hand keeps telling me to get rid of the pull ups but he would not be the one up changing sheets in the middle of the night multiple times., I truly believe when he is ready it will happen. We are still adjusting to full day K. Like another op stated- my son is also fine to stay in wet/ poop pants all day too if we allowed it.

I'm just want him comfortable - not extra itchy and to save $$ the next few years. I hate when he poops in them while standing infront of the toilet and I have to trash them when they have only been on less then 30 mins.

I've looked at making them from a few pinterest and I know I can make them just not sure out of what. Need to investigate it a bit more.

Keep the suggestions coming!

And thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.

Have you tried different brands of pull ups? My DS wet the bed frequently for many years and at 10 still has occasional accidents at night. Anyway, when he was still wearing pull ups, there were certain brands that he liked better than others. He preferred the Kroger night pants over the name brands.

Just FYI, my friends DD, who is in 6th grade and also on the spectrum, still has night time wetting issues.

Bumkins brand has training pants that are the style of a pull up. Soft soft cloth inside, and very plush, with a smooth and silky nylon shell over it. (OK I'm going by info that's a few years old here, from when DS used them...they might have changed, but I sure hope not)

They would be as easy to pull up as underpants, so if he wet and noticed it he could switch them out pretty easily.

I really commend you for looking into this! The reason I used cloth with DS (and would use cloth for any future baby if we have one) was because my mom used cloth with us, and that was because my skin was SO sensitive and I was reacting terribly when only hours old. Now, today's detergents can be pretty harsh, and they aren't all great for cloth dipes, but you can look into that LATER, don't worry about it now. :)

We really liked Bumkins. They also had really simple dipes that were probably the most disposable-like in ease of putting on, with velcro in the spot where the adhesive is on disposables, and shaped like them too. I don't know how big the sizes go for those "all in one" dipes they make, but you could always check.

OK, it looks like the actual Bumkins website doesn't have them. But a google of "bumkins training pants" yields at least one website, and the XL size goes 40+ lbs. Oh, and they don't seem to have the velcro dipes anymore...sadness...the one-size all-in-one style was coming up as DS was leaving dipes, and I really disliked them.

Another option (to go with whatever cloth diaper thing you find) - they now make disposable waterproof pads (they are in the pull up section). I have those under my sons mattress "just in case."

You could do the make the bed with multiple layers thing with the waterproof pad between each layer to make things easier on yourself. Good luck!

DS wasn't nighttime trained until he was 8, and he is not on the spectrum. He just slept very soundly. Pediatricians (several over the years, we move alot) said not to worry about it until he was 10.

He liked Goodnights....the pull ups have a fluffy layer that I think would be itchy if wet, and the Goodnights didn't. We tried Pull ups once and never went back, mostly because they leaked out the side.

I also did his bed in layers....mattress pad, wet pad, sheet, wet pad, sheet, wet pad, sheet.....that would get me through maybe a week? Just strip off the top two layers. He also, when he was about 6, maybe 7, would strip the sheet himself and lay back down, or he'd go sleep on the floor.

It was literally like one night he stopped. Same with DD. No accidents, no tapering off, just stopped. So hang in there!

My friend has had two older bedwetters and she swears by Sandys by Motherease.

Our oldest son was still having accidents up until he was almost 6 years old. We tried everything including limiting his fluids near bedtime and waking him up to go in the middle of the night. He was just a sound sleeper and never really woke up enough to stop himself from wetting the bed.

Based on a post I saw here on the DIS we bought a moisture alarm from Amazon and it worked almost immediately.

http://www.amazon.com/PottyMD-W103-...e=UTF8&qid=1356903424&sr=8-1&keywords=wetstop

Within a couple of weeks of using it he was completely dry every night and we were able to stop using pull ups and stop washing sheets.

Good luck with your training :)

Is it only night you are concerned about? My sons Dr. gave him DDAVP. It comes in eye drops and pill form. It basically stops the urine output for so many hours.

We also used the moisture detection device. It truly works! We first saw a urinary specialist, and he did have a medical issue, but after that was taken care of he still wet the bed.

The moisture thing attaches to his underwear and an alarm goes off. The first week he was so soundly asleep the alarm didn't wake him up, but it sure woke us up. He did not make it to the bathroom.

The second week it sort of woke him up, and he was so confused. He would twirl around in circles, but sometimes we were able to get him to the bathroom. He remembered none of this when he woke up.

The third week he got to the bathroom himself! And forgot to lift the lid on the toilet.

The fourth week it worked!!! He work up, and got to the bathroom and went back to sleep. In the morning he remembered it all!!!

So if you go this route continue with patience. It really pays off!

Someone recommended Diaper Swappers and I agree. They can help point you in the direction of some WAHM's who create trainers for older kids. I know there are a few on Hyena Cart, but I don't know their names off the top of my head.

Going to Hyena Cart and typing in "cloth trainer" will give you a lot of results. Maybe see if you can just search through and find something you like :)

Good luck :goodvibes
