Close: Lost job today, no Disney

I would also talk to someone in HR, but I do understand about the severance package, which may include health care benefits. I wouldn't just say forget it I am taking off.

Couldn't your spouse just take the kids without you?

I would speak w/ an attorney today about your rights in regards to your paid time off that was already scheduled and approved of. Like a PP stated, if you are still an employee for another 2 weeks, you should be entitled to all the benefits of an employee until your official termination date. You can consult HR, but I would verify with an attorney to make sure they are not twisting the truth to the company benefit.

I don't really have any advice for you, but I wanted to say I am very sorry.

Have you even talked with them about the vacation time? I really don't see how, if they appoved the vacation time already prior to laying you off, they can go back on that. Is there any practical reason that you can't serve out the two weeks when you get back? I have found most employers to be reasonable with issues like this, so I would at least ask, if you haven't already.

I'm very sorry and hope things work out for you.
I would send my husband with kids on trip if I was in that situation.

Honestly, if you've paid and can't get your money back, I'd go. They can't do much if they've already laid you off. Tell them you have plans, you can't change them and you would like to get your last paycheck with all your vacation/sick pay at the end of this week. I'm so sorry for your job loss, I hope you are able to find something soon and I really hope you can go to Disney! :)

Me too! You need to tell them to kiss off and go on your vacation. You losing your job is going to effect your family is so many ways, please let your kids enjoy their trip before everything is turned upside down. You all deserve some happiness right now.

Your threads have helped, and my my wife is trying to muster the courage to go on tomorrow as planned. Trying even harder to find someone who can take the time off to go with her on short notice.

Thanks so much for the support. I don't want to sound like a sob story. I'm just one of thousands in my own company let go this week, let alone all the others you hear on the news. Reflecting on it, it is probably a rare thing for the timing to be right.

Thanks again, and good luck to all others out there who find themselves in the same situation.

Hey, I'll go with her! :) ;) J/k of course. I wish I could go though. I think dh would kill me, ha ha! I hope she goes and I wish you could go with her. I think it stinks that you have a trip planned and your company won't let you take the trip anyway...

I hope she goes for the kids sake, it will not be the same but if you have cell phones maybe they can all call you and have you participate in whatever they are doing at the time, fireworks a ride whatever. My husband was not going to go in April with us so that is what we were going to do it is what we did 2 years ago when he couldn't go with us. Send pix if you can by phone. Good Luck in the future we all need to keep our chins up and Hope for a brighter day ahead !!

So sorry for your situation! I'm like everyone else... go enjoy your trip.

I would NOT tell them to kiss off because you don't want to burn a bridge for a company you might have to work for again. But if you explain nicely that you have this trip planned that is non-refundable maybe they would understand.

My DH lost was laid off in December, but was rehired by the same company this month for a different job. We have had a WDW trip planned for almost a year now that was originally approved by this company. The new boss had to give the same time off no matter what.... thank God!

Good Luck,
Jen

We actually rented DVC points from a member on this site and were told there was nothing we can do. Seeing how we are not owners ourselves, unfortunately we are not able to deal directly with WDW.

As a DVC member I am embarrassed of their treatment. Would this trip be your first at a DVC property? I hope you wont give up on trying it out again at some point. The "apartment" setting is perfect for families like yours.

I hate it that your family may go without you! I can not imagine going without my DH. Is there any way you could meet them there over the weekend?

We were booked and headed to Disney on Sat, but laid off today. Must finish two weeks so no trip for the kids. We have 3 kids, DD 6, DD3 and DS2, all who have talked nonstop about trip. They cleaned every day to earn $$ for their souveniers. DS 6 checked out travel books from the library to go over all the rides, and even read about DW to the younger ones. She wrote letters to people on the trip, all drew pictures, etc. How do we break the news? At their age, I know they won't understand the concept.

Also, just adds salt to the wound when you can't get your money back.:sad1:

Seriously go on the trip. I know it's disappointing but work can't tell you that you can't take a vacation you already paid for. You could offer to work 1 week extra but work must adhere to vacations depending on your type of work you do. Sorry again about you being laid off. Hopefully you can find a new job soon.

I'm a DVC member too. I don't know how the DVC member could help the OP. OP my heart breaks for your situation, but I think if the DVC'r canceled your reservation with member services, the points would go into a 30 day use them or lose them situation. Maybe I'm confused, but I remember there being strings attached to late cancellations.

OP, on the work situation, agghhh!! We have friends and neighbors going through layoffs right now (and frankly it could be any of us, anytime). Both dh and I have been through it in the past. Your situation is so unique though.:grouphug:

We have never rented our points out, so I do not know know how that works. And I am really not sure about this either but I thought if you cancel a trip within 30 days they put those points in a holding account that can not be used for a while. Is that right? We have never had to cancel... knock on wood... so I'm really not sure of the details.

SandJ7749, I had to go look up the guidelines in my Member Book.

I stand corrected. I thought last minute cancellations resulted in the member (or renter, theoretically) having to use the points within 30 days. In reading about the holding account, it sounds like you could re-book anytime within the calendar year, pending availability. OP, again, I'm sorry for your situation.

Thanks for looking it up, I honestly had no idea.

Sob story? Hardly. This is huge, you have a right to feel bad. I hope you end up going and if you don't, I hope your wife and kids go.

Good luck. Hopefully you'll find something that suits you even better.

Unless Ohio law is radically different form Alabama I don't see how they can force you to forefit vacation that has already been approved. It is agianst our state law to do so. I know because my mom just went through something similar. She lost her vacation because she had not put in for it before the layoff, but our law says you can only be forced to forefit vacation time already approved if you are the one seperating form the company volintarily, not the other way around.

DVC Members and cancelling - since they are within the 30 day window, those points go into holding. They cannot be banked, will expire at the end of the use year, and can only be used for a reservation 60 days or less out. Since none of us are the member, we have no idea what their use year is - its possible the points expire at the end of this month. It is possible that any reservation that could be made for a future date in this use year would be more points that the member does not have available. None of us can judge whether its even possible for the member to be helpful.

However, its possibly worth a phone call to the member to see if the vacation can simply be pushed out three or four weeks. You might need to shorten it a day, stay at a different resort, switch rooms during your stay or take no for an answer - but they MAY be able and willing to help.

DVC rentals are a great value - but their is significant risk in the cancellation of a DVC unit.

I would have to find someone else to go with my dh and kids if that happened to me or just have them go anyway...especially since it's already paid for. Hope things get better for you soon!
