Close: Lost job today, no Disney

Your threads have helped, and my my wife is trying to muster the courage to go on tomorrow as planned. Trying even harder to find someone who can take the time off to go with her on short notice.

Thanks so much for the support. I don't want to sound like a sob story. I'm just one of thousands in my own company let go this week, let alone all the others you hear on the news. Reflecting on it, it is probably a rare thing for the timing to be right.

Thanks again, and good luck to all others out there who find themselves in the same situation.

Keeping my fingers crossed that we get a happy update that all of you are able to go.
Did you speak to anyone about the pre planned vacation?

Sorry to hear about that. I agree with the good advice of the posters. If you can't get the money back and it's pre-arranged, I say go.

Sending happy thoughts your way, Dawn

I hope you work it out so you can all go. My DH was laid off before our trip 2 years ago and we decided to still go and I'm so glad we did. We enjoyed ourselves and dealt with the "real world" when we got home. Times are still tough for us now but we look back and have these wonderful memories with our kids at Disney.

Good luck to you and your family.

I agree with those who posted that my worker rights lie in taking the trip. Of course HR and boss didn't see it that way, but they postponed my departure this afternoon for an entire month (unrelated of course). Too happy about that to rock the boat now.

Wife is taking kids and dragged in her mother. Even though I wanted to experience it with them, happy they will have the memories.

Blessings to your family:grouphug:

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Once you get back on your feet you will have to plan another trip with the little ones, and think of all the stuff they can teach YOU!! :grouphug:

:grouphug: I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. I'm glad the kids got to go- sorry you are missing it. We had to cancel a Disney trip 4 years ago when our kids were 5 and 7- same as yours, they had worked to earn money for spending and we had planned the trip for 2 years. DH got laid off and it was far enough out to cancel. It was very hard to make the kids understand and all we could say was- we'll go as soon as we can- that was 3 years later! DD cried for a month! And, to add salt to the wound- her grandparents and my brother's family went that year- they already had a trip planned. Anyway...I'm happy your wife and kids are getting to go. Glad to hear you got another month of work though- that is wonderful! Congratulations!

That's very noble of you to let your MIL go in your place. :) I'm glad you got an extra month out of your employer, it's another month of income, but I'm sorry you won't get to go to Disney. It's an excuse to go again as a family once you're back in a better financial place.

Good luck in your job hunt. Mabey something better is on the horizon!

So sorry to hear that you lost your job. My husband lost his in October but thankfully is now employed. He found a great website I wanted to share with you and any others out there who have experienced job loss. It's www.indeed.com This sight apparently pulls listings from all other job sites. So for example, if a job is posted on Monster, or your local paper, or at Target.com, they should all show up on indeed. Hope this helps and good luck with your search. I hope your wife, MIL, and kids have a safe trip.

I am so sorry:grouphug:

We have been in a similar situation, as I am sure a great number of DISer's also.

It hurts now, but in the end it will all work out.

You have a great resource as a PP pointed out. Put your resume out there and maybe some Diser can help you.

My DH lost his job 2 x in 2 years. The first time one month and than 9 months without a job.
1. Get Cobra or a state fund heath insurance for your family, please do this ASAP.
2. Spruce up your resume
3. Do not be shy or ashamed. You did nothing wrong.
4. Look at some expenses that can be cut.

I just wanted to add my wishes that you are able to find a great new job and get back on your feet soon. IMO, your boss is being a jerk, since the vacation was already approved and booked. I think you did the right thing sending your spouse and kids, since the kids would have been so disappointed and you would have lost the money anyway.

Stay positive. Imagine how much fun those kids will have showing YOU around Disney in another year or 2.

Unemployment does pay if you have been fired in many cases. Once the OP explains the situation they can very well still get their unemployment as they are not being fired for being a problem worker.

As many have said, I am not familiar with Ohio law, but my husband was "fired" from his most recent job, accused of misconduct. The company fought his unemployment, we hired an attorney, and while he was unemployed and I was home from work (it was the summer and I'm a teacher), we researched and researched and gathered all sorts of documentation...when we finally got his unemployment hearing, DH's was awarded all unemployment, back to initial termination because company couldn't prove that he intentionally caused harm to the company.

OP can clearly prove that he/she paid for this trip ahead of time and was granted time off. Company couldn't force her to work after granting her the time off and I am pretty sure that if my husband won his case, that this would be no issue.

But again, I'm not from Ohio. This is just my thought.

I know how tough it can be. Im glad the kids will still be able to experience it, Have them take lots of pictures for you so they can have the excitement all over again when they tell you about it. This will just give you a good excuse to go again when things look up a bit:)

I'm so sorry that you can't be with your family at Disney, but you are a great dad for letting them have this trip! I hope that you will be able to find another job soon!

Honestly, if you've paid and can't get your money back, I'd go. They can't do much if they've already laid you off. Tell them you have plans, you can't change them and you would like to get your last paycheck with all your vacation/sick pay at the end of this week. I'm so sorry for your job loss, I hope you are able to find something soon and I really hope you can go to Disney! :)

I agree 100%. I would let them know you're last day will be XX/XX and enjoy your trip with your kids.

I'm so sorry that you lost your job . Its good that your wife still took the kids because that would have been so hard explaining .. hope they bring lots of pics to show you! Glad that your job got extended for a month that should be a good thing for your pockets!
