and all the drains in the upstairs bathroom is also clogged - should I quit flushing the upstairs toilet and call a plumber or keep trying to unclog it myself?

UPDATE: Got an estimate for $400 to take out the toilet and go down with the snake - called our handyman tonight and will see if he can unclog in the morning. $400 is a lot of money!

LAST UPDATE: Handyman said to use Drano (about $12) and after two cupfuls, the toilet is working better than ever!

OMG - this happened to us!!!

Shut off the toilet and stop messing with it.

The water is going to start saturating the downstairs ceiling and it could cave in on you.

Feel the ceiling downstairs and see if it feels wet & spongy. If so...punch some small holes in the ceiling and let the water drip out into some buckets.

We had to do this!! We even put a heater on a ladder pointing up at the ceiling to help dry it out.

Have you tried plunging it?

If so and nothing works - then yes get a plumber!!!

Good luck!!! :wizard:
I feel your pain!!!

I'm really hoping this is a joke.

Ya think?

Is the toilet overflowing causing the water to seep through the floor to the level below or is the water coming out of the plumbing some place where you can not see.
Either way stop flushing. Start plunging and/or get a "snake" drain rooter from the local hardware store. It may be able to be fixed without the $150 minimum plumber charge. Probably more on weekends!!!

If the water is not overflowing but still leaking the first place I would look is the wax ring that seals the toilet to the fixed plumbing in the floor. But you have to pick up the whole toilet to do that. Which includes (usualy) removing the water line, draining and/or removing the back tank.

good luck!

Please tell me you aren't serious...

I'm only sorry to hear that someone else already had this experience. :sad2:

Whatever the price, it's a bargain to put this to a stop :)

I think you throw more toilet paper in, and give it a few more good flushes.

;)

Kidding...seriously, don't flush again. It'll only make it a LOT worse!!

Water from toilet + light fixture / electricity = bad. :) ( and trust me, that's all the math I'm actually capable of......)

Call a plumber

ok seriously, you are killing me.

drive to Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or anywhere else that has people wearing those handyman apron type things walking around.

Tell them that you need to buy a toilet snake or toilet auger. It will cost you about $20, probably less.

Take it home, follow the directions.

I'm been using a toilet auger for two days now - whatever is clogging the toilet is too far down.

It sounds like you really need to call a plumber. If the other drains are also clogged, the glog is probably near the main line to the sewer system or septic tank, and you will need professional help to fix it.

Get a price from someone else. I don't know if prices are different where you live, but my DH works PT as a plumber, and says $400 is crazy. Also, you don't need to take the toilet out to snake it. You may need to if they have to replace the wax thing underneath it or something, but not just to snake the line.

Good luck

jaye614 - We have a clogged toilet quite often try this SAVED another DIS'ers upstairs toilet, too!!

Don't flush, Add 1 diet coke and Dawn dish liquid wait 1/2 an hour then flush. It must be Dawn!!

I was out of diet coke, so I used baking soda and vinager, but it didn't work as well
