Clearskies photographic Journey to the World and Beyond - 8 theme parks & much more

As long as the pictures are as good as your's, I have no problem looking at tons of bird pictures.:thumbsup2 It's been years since we've been to Sea World and I'm enjoying the trip down memory lane.

I second this! on the stale bread...it's a shame you didn't enjoy the meal after the long walk. Hope the animals listen up and are more co-operative later on!

Am also going to check out your Pop pictures in your other TR - hadn't realised you stayed there in 2009.

Those are some seriously awesome photos! What kind of camera are you using again?? Whatever it is, the zoom is phenomenal. :thumbsup2
Thank you Aprilisis :goodvibes
I am using a Canon 5D MarkII Digital SLR. Since it is an SLR it does not have any built in lenses so I have an assortment of lenses that I used. Most sane people rightfully believe that I am a bit bonkers to carry around the amount of equipment that I do. It adds about 25 lbs to my back. I consider it part of my exercise program :) The lens that I have that provided the largest "zoom" is a 300mm f/4 lens with Image Stabilization.

Wow - great pics and very entertaining report so far! I had to switch over to your 2009 TR since we're staying at Pop for part of our upcoming trip and I wanted to see your pics of that resort - haven't read all yet but have been scrolling through your pics and I'm envious of your skills. Those fireworks pics are gorgeous! Got my first DSLR 2 years ago and have not really had time to master it yet (if that's even possible). Your TR has inspired me to put some additional effort into taking better night photos before our May trip since that is a weak area for me...

Looking forward to seeing and hearing about the rest of your trip!
Hi Sharona! Thank you for joining. I loved photographing Pop. As you could tell from my 2009 TR I especially loved it at night when it is lit up.

Keep using your DSLR and you will see improvements. The more you use it and get used to it the more natural it will become. I am still learning myself but I can see improvements from a couple years back. I'll probably never master it.

I highly recommend bringing a tripod around if you want good night pictures and fireworks. It can be a pain in the rear to lug around but you should be able to get much better results with it. If you don't want to carry one though there are other options such as a gorillapod or something similar that can do the trick without all the bulk and weight. Let me know if you want any more specific info. You have lots of time to prepare for your May trip.

:goodvibes Thank you for indulging me Lisa. I am glad that you don't think that this TR is "for the birds"

Thank you as well Tanz :goodvibes

Well, some animals behaved better than others. I should be able to wrap up Sea world in my next installment.

I could never get sick of pictures of puffins and penguins! They're all so stinkin' cute!

I definitely enjoy some slapstick humor (I'm easily amused), so I think the show you saw earlier would be right up my alley. :lmao:

:) I am not sure what it is about them but I am with you on that Danielle.

Oh, if you head there in a future trip then make sure you get seated early and you will really be amused.

Your pictures are AMAZING! I can't wait to see the next installment.

Hi reelmom, thank you for stopping by and for your comments. I take a lot of pictures so some of them are bound to turn out :)

I will be posting my next installment after I get done with work today.

I managed to miss some updates...not sure how that happened!

I love all your Sea World animal pics! I haven't been there since probably the early '80s, so it's nice to remember what I'm missing.

In between dolphin stunts they had some entertainers. I can't say I am a fan but I was impressed that they were able to get Lady Gaga for the show.

large.jpg
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Lady Gaga, indeed!

large.jpg

I can't take this oppressive heat anymore. The heck with this show. I'm jumping into the water.

large.jpg

I'm right behind you on this one dude.
I love the sequence of these two, in particular!

Hi Nory,
I know you are busy from your TR. I have caught up and have been anxiously awaiting your next entertaining update. I see you are poised to post an update this weekend. We'll hold you to it.

Thank you for your comments!

"For each of us,
There comes a moment—
A defining instant in our lives—
and we are changed… forever.

There comes a time
When we stop wondering,
And begin to believe!"

For me this perfectly decribes how I felt the first time I saw Illuminations. Oh, wait a minute. We are still in Sea World aren't we and I'm fairly sure thats not quite where they are headed with this. This is the dramatic intro to their signature show in Sea World called ........yep you got it "Believe".

We made our way into Shamu stadium and the rest of our crew wanted to sit in the Splash zone seats. My camera told me in no uncertain terms that there was no chance that it was headed to those seats. So, to keep my camera happy we went off by ourselves together for in search of a seat a bit higher and drier than where the rest of our crew was headed where the only moisture my camera had to fear was my sweat from the brutal heat that day (my apologies for that pleasant thought).

Here is a pic of Shamu stadium. It is the largest stadium in the park.
original.jpg

Well after seeing the show I would say that I "stopped wondering" and "began to believe" that the show was still good but not quite at the level that was in the past. Listen, this is still excellent entertainment and if you have never seen it then you will most certainly enjoy watching these massive creatures put on a tremendous display for you and you won't know what you missed. Heck, we still enjoy the show as well but it is just not as impressive a show now that the trainers are not allowed in the water after the last Tilikum incident. Don't get me wrong, it is perfectly understandable why they are keeping the trainers out of the water for the shows and you certainly can't fault SeaWorld for this. It is just a shame that there are these safety issues with these creatures and the show had to change.

Here are some pictures of these colossal stars strutting their stuff.

When you stop and think about it (something I rarely do), it is truly is amazing that they can train these behemoths to perform the way they do on cue.

After the show ended I caught up with my travelling partners and we made our way out of the stadium. The kids wanted another excursion to the Wild Arctic. There was no argument from me. One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that they keep this attraction gloriously cool and it is so heavenly to get in there on a hot day to put a halt to the melting process from the unmerciful sun. Again I don't have any pictures of our amazingly quick travels from Florida over to the Arctic since my camera was stowed away for the journey. After the attraction we made our way through the exhibits again.

Hmmm...they did not improve the lighting from earlier on the beluga whales. What's up with that....didn't they realize I wanted good pictures for this Trip Report.
original.jpg

At least the walrus behaved a bit better and showed me his other end
original.jpg

That lazy polar bear was still dreaming away though.
original.jpg

After we got out of the Wild Arctic, we made our way over the the "black hole" of the park. I am talking about "Shamu's Happy Harbor" aka "nap time for clearskies". This is a kiddie area which has smaller rides, a big climbing net area and some areas where kids can splash around in water. The younger kids in our group wanted to play around in the area for a while. My wife and the daughter of the other family took advantage of this opportunuty to escape and go ride Manta again. I parked myself at a table with all the bags while my son and his friend went to climb the nets. I am not sure how long we were held captive in this area but it was quite some time. I'll approximate it at..er..10 hours. Well it felt like that. As a public service announcement I must warn you that if you have younger kids and you want to see a lot of Sea World in one day then AVOID this area until you've seen most of what you wanted to experience first. There, I have done my part for the greater good of the Dis community to warn you.

At some point after my nap, my son and his friend were getting antsy. I decided that I would take them ahead and the others will be able to catch up with us when they were ready. we informed the rest of our crew and we forged ahead. We made our way over to the Shark Encounter Exhibit. This is where we ate dinner on our arrival day but we never went through the Shark exhibit. So here we go...

queue the Jaws music

original.jpg

Whoa, watch out..that is one fierce looking shark isn't it?

Um...OK, yeah it is not a shark. There is a small aquarium section before you get to the Sharks area.

original.jpg

original.jpg

OK, now I assure you, we are now getting to the Shark area. Note that I was not too keen on the fact that they take you through on a conveyor belt so you can't stop and get set for a picture. I guess this is their way to ensure that people don't dwell here.

original.jpg

original.jpg

If you want a better view where you can remain stationary then Shark's Underwater Grill is the place to go.

We actually went though this exibit twice while waiting for the others. I was planning to try to see the A'lure show but it became evident that we were going to miss the last showing. We stayed around the area and I snapped a few more pics of what else.......birds.

We came across this particular bird. It is an Inca Tern. We first came across these birds at the bronx zoo (well not these particular ones but you know what I mean) and I loved their look.
original.jpg

Since we all know that "One good tern deserves another", here is a another pic for you.

large.jpg

Oh come on, I had to say that...

ok, one last bird pic while waiting.
original.jpg

By the time we collected our crew back together it was too late to make any of the shows we had not seen. We decided to call it a day from Sea World and make our way back to the resort to see my SIL and family who checked in earlier in the day. We lucked out and they were put in the adoining room to ours. They were not straying from the resort and were using their arrival day to getting settled in and relax by the pool. Hmmm...relaxing while on vacation. This is a foreign concept to me. Anyway, we parted ways with both our friends as well as Sea World for this trip and headed back to ASMO. Our friends were moving further south in Florida to other adventures on a cruise ship. Sea World was staying put but we had other plans for the remainder of the trip. We'll just have to see some of the other shows the next time we go on vacation. I'll pick up here here in my next installment. We will be heading out to Dinner with my SIL's family to my favorite buffet on property tonight. It was my wife's favorite as well until it got de-throned by another one on this trip. You'll just have to wait until the next installment to find out which buffets I am talking about. I know that is some tough suspense to live with.

The Inca Tern is such a pretty bird. I love your photos of the Believe! show, sharks, and everything else! Thanks for sharing.
And it IS suspenseful to wait to find out what buffet is your favorite!!!

Hey there! I just caught up on your report. I had lots of comments in my head as I went along....... but alas.........my aging brain let go of them........

The photos are outstanding! Now keep in mind I hang out here to get my dose of Disney, but I'm REALLY enjoying the other parks as well. Our family loves Sea World, and you did it proud!

I know you mentioned your 300mm f/4 lens, but what else are you using. I'd like to hear if you stick with one lens primarily then swap out occasionally, or if you change it up a lot. I struggle with this a lot. I want to be in the moment, but I also want the best lens for the situation.

Can't wait to read more! :surfweb:

Love the pictures of the 'believe' show.

What is with the beluga whales and the walrus...don't they know how to be good sports for the camera?!

I wonder what that lazy polar bear was dreaming of...um no I'm not going to wake up for you to take my photo. I've had enough publicity for today - thanks.

Am glad you all survived the shark area to tell the tale :thumbsup2

Thank you for coming by Janet!

I know you love your Disney experiences so I appreciate you hanging in. My Disney park visits are at the tail end of this trip. I do have a lot of nighttime pictures of Disney including lots of fireworks pictures from various off site locations before we get to our park days though as well as some DTD pics. Thank you for reading about the "other" parks though :)

I appreciate your comments on my photos. When you chronicle a trip it is tough to get them all to be winners. Sometimes I have to take what I am given with the light. Thank you for the positive feedback. :goodvibes

Oh boy, you want to know what I am crazy enough to carry around. Well here is my arsenal of lenses:

17-40mm f/4L - I need to improve on taking wide angle shots.
24-70mm f/2.8L - The lens I use most as a walk-around lens
50mm f/1.8 - Did not use very often now that I have the 85mm 1.2 but it is light so really did not weigh me down
70-200mm f/4L - When I want more reach but still want to zoom in and out
85mm f/1.2L - This one is new for this trip. This is a great portrait lens and became my low light lens for rides. Though a smaller focal length, big aperture lens would be better for that, I don't have one (yet)
300mm f/4L IS - I love this lens!

There are some times where I switch lenses around frequently and then there are other times where I decide I am going to stick with just one lens for a series of shots (such as that 300mm f/4). In those instances the reason I don't switch is not really because I can't be bothered to switch the lenses around. It is more so because I feel that I want to experiment a bit with a particular lens and try to get different perspectives with it. I can't say I put too much thought into that beforehand though. It just comes down to what I am feeling at that time. Note that sticking with one lens does not always work out though. If say I am walking around with that 300mm lens on and my daughter sees a character that she wants a picure with it would not work out that well for me to back up far enough to get them both in the picture so the decision to switch lenses is pretty much already made for me.

Your Shamu pics are amazing!

All I had to do was get that Jaws theme running in my head, and suddenly these aquarium pics became very suspenseful!
:rotfl2: Thank you Nory
You always have entertaining captions!
Can I hire you to help with the completion of this TR. I need more of your creativity :lmao:

Yeah right. What's up with them not cooperating :confused3 Some serious attitude adjustments are in order in that exhibit.

That shark area was indeed dicey :)

Thanks for the rundown! What a great collection of glass you have! I'm with you and always carry a heavy bag of gear. Once you have the lenses and know what they'll do, isn't it hard to go back? I started with a Tamron 18-270, which is great as a theme park walk-around lens. But then I started adding some faster lenses, which I never want to leave behind, so I end up leaving the all-in-one behind in an effort to lighten the load!

I can certainly see why you like that 300mm so much! How much does it weigh?

Wanna come photograph my son's high school graduation in the spring? The only long fast lens I have is my Sigma 50-150, and I don't think it's quite long enough. I think your 300mm might just do the trick! Or just go ahead and send the lens........ I promise I'll send it back..........really........... well..... unless I REALLY like it! :lmao:

Can't wait to see more!

I think you're doing great on your own! But maybe, for the right price... :rotfl:
Thank you Nory but your humor would do nothing but enhance this. Now that you are embarking on your journey to become a famous author, I sadly don't think I can afford your services. :)

I am glad that I have someone that does not think I am touched in the head for carrying around so much :) I agree that it is so hard to leave those fast lenses behind once you know and love them. There are sometimes when I go off at night after a full day of carrying around my bag in the parks though where I will lighten the load a bit but that is about the only time I pare down.

Well, the weight of the 300mm is about 2.6 lbs. It's a bit heavy but not too much more than my 24-70 weighing in at a little over 2 lbs which I am most used to hanging around my neck.

Pshaw, you don't need me photographing your son's graduation. You have great skills yourself. If you can get the ceremony moved to New Jersey I would gladly lend you my lens for the day. My 300mm is a bit fearful of flying and it needs me by its side on flights so it wouldn't take a journey out to your area on its own ;)

When we made it back to the resort to catch up with my SIL's family, we got to our room and found our new neighbors were nowhere to be found. So, my wife and kids quickly got on their bathing suits and we headed to the Duck Pond pool in search of our new party members.

Hey Goofy, sorry to interrupt your game, is our SIL's family around?

large.jpg

Gawrsh, sorry no, why don't you try the Fantasia pool

So off we went to the main pool

Hey there Mickey, have you seen our SIL's family

original.jpg

Why don't you try over there?

Um..thanks Mick but I don't think they can fly.

ok, How about over there?
large.jpg

Um, no, I don't think they are in those trees either and listen don't take this the wrong way but you might want to see someone about spiffing up those shoes a bit Mickey

He He Thanks. I'll sure look into that. Did you try over there?
original.jpg

Er..Nope, not there either. Ok then Mickey. I see you've got important...um... sorcerer things to do ... so we'll stop bothering you and keep looking. thanks anyway Mickey. Appreciate the.....er....help.

Since we could not find them, my wife and kids decided to take a dip in the pool anyway. I took a couple more pics and then sat down to relax in a lounge chair for a bit.

large.jpg

Hellooooo beautiful...Was that an earthquake or did you just rock my world?

large.jpg

Seriously? We stand here every single day. I think you've said that one about 4 million times. Let's give it a rest today, ok?

While I was sitting I got a call from my SIL that they were in their room. we must have just missed each other when going to the Duck Pond Pool. Hmmph...I'm a little miffed at Goofy. He could have mentioned that even though there were not there when we asked that they had just left.

We made it back to the room and met up with our neighbors. I mentioned in my last post that we are headed to my favorite buffet on property. Did you guess what it was? Since the character experiences are sadly not what they used to be when the kids were younger my favorite is based on food and the winner for me is....Boma. I will get to my favorite character buffet though later in this trip.

The AKL is not far from the All Star Resorts area and car is definitely the way to travel there if you have one. During the short drive over the skies unleashed a torrential rain down upon us. It was raining cats, dogs, horses, cows, you name it. This is the kind of rain where is does not matter if you are wearing a rain poncho, you are going to get wet. when we got the AKL I pulled the car up near the main entrance and let the rest of the family out while I went to park the car in the lot. My brother in law did the same. I tried making a mad dash from the parking lot to the resort but it was an excercise in futility. I was soaked by the time I got in anyway. Unfortunately, it was becoming a nightly ritual for me to get a good soaking so far.

After we got our beeper I took a few pics while waiting for the table

large.jpg

I thought after this last picture that it would have been pretty awkward if just as I was taking the picture that someone came out of the bathroom door. "Hey mister, let me capture you for prosperity after doing your business in there." I quickly decided that a picture of the ladies room fixture would not be a smart move.

It did not take too long to get seated. Since I have dietary restrictions I had to wait for a Chef while the rest of the table went to get some food. Fortunately there was a nice man in the table next to me that I was able to chat with about photography while waiting. He was a very rare breed that still used film. Personally I could never go back. The rest of the table came back and started eating and there was still no chef to be found. The waiter came by and said, Oh, he has not come by yet..let me look.. and then disappeared for a while. After waiting a bit more the waiter came back and said that the Chef was with someone else and would be by soon. Note that I could not see anyone resembling the chef near to buffet or in the dining area but ok I continued to wait. The rest of the table had started going for seconds when he finally came by and gave me the run down of what was safe on the buffet. There was still a lot for me to eat but when he got to the soups he said there were none there that were ok for me. He asked if I would like him to check back in the kitchen on other soups I could eat and I said sure and we finished the walkthrough so I could finally get some grub. This was the last I saw of the man. He never even came by to tell me there was "no soup for you".

There was still plenty to eat though and it was all tasty so I was not disappointed with the meal. Note that there is no steak to be had so I did not take a picture of my meal and there is no ratings tonight. All in all, it was another good meal at Boma. The service...eh...not stellar...but the food was good. I'll tell you about a completly different amazing chef experience later in the trip. If you have dietarty restrictions that is the place to go.

We strolled around a bit after eating but it was still raining some so pictures of the animals outside was not a happening thing. The downpour fortunately had at least stopped though.

By the time we got back to our resort the rain had stopped but there was still a thick humidity in the air. I was going to head out for some more exploring but we had a fun expirement in store for us first. My SIL drove down to Fla from home and had stopped in Gainesville along the way to visit my wife's uncle. Her uncle gave her something to bring down to us to try. There are these berries called "Miracle Fruit". They have a surprise effect on you after you eat one. Ok, stop right there, don't worry this is all on the up and up we are not talking about any type of drug or anything. We are as straight a family as you are going to find. Anyway, as you eat this berry you swirl the flesh of the berry around in your mouth and your toungue. After you do this for a while, anything you eat that is sour now is supposed to taste sweet. I had heard of these before so I knew this was for real and I had wanted to try them. My SIL only had lemons so after we all ate this berry, everyone ate some lemon wedges. Wouldn't you know that for everyone except me, the lemon wedge was truly very sweet and tasted like lemonaid. I must have already killed my sweet receptors since I hardly eat any sugar so the darned thing did not really work for much me. Well, either that or the rest of the family was all in on an elaborate joke on me. since I have read about these before I knew that this was for real. Note that after the trip I ordered some tablet form of this from Amazon and had a tasting experience of a variety of differnt foods with some friends. The results were a bit better for me but still not what the others experienced.

So, after fun with lemons and we put the kids went dow to bed I went out exploring again. This time I decided to walk over to the All Star Music resort area to check out the buildings there. Because of the thick humidity I again had issues with my lens fogging up. Here are some pictures after I was able to clear things up a bit.

By this time it was getting late so I decided to call it a night. That's a wrap on Day 4.

For our next day we are headed out of town. We'll pick up from there next time.
