Clearing the air about PALO

For a long time people have talked here about PALO. Opinions, recommendations, etc. And along the way, the actual name has been pronounced differently by many people. This is in no way attacking anyone or anything, I just wanted to clear the air about PALO.
I have always called it PALO (not Palo's, since it is not owned by a little dude named Palo).
On our cruise, we heard crew members calling it Palo's.....we were frustrated....so, we asked! LOL!!!::yes::
We asked the servers in PALO and found out the true name of this stellar restaraunt and what it means!

The restaraunt is called PALO....there is no "s" and it is not pronounced Pay-Low.
It is Pah-Low and the term is actually the name for the pole they use for the gondolas in Venice.
Now this is what we were told, so I am not trying to undermine anyone's opinion. I just figured that the people who work in Palo know more than we all do! LOL!

So, here we go...the air is clear...we know the true meaning! And for those of you that already knew...sorry....

You are so right, Kamgen!! :)

It is named after an object, not a person, so it should never be used in the possesive form. If it was my restaurant, you could call it Beano's, but since it is named after a Palo (pole), it is always just Palo.

Amen, Sistah!!

'Beano'

Thank you for the info (and the "Into to Italian" lesson)... I knew it wasn't plural (so no "s"), but I never knew why!!

So glad to see there are others like me....I wasn't sure how many more times I could hear it referred to as Palos and not burst! LOL!!!

My good friend Señor Ferrari lamented about this a while back. Thanks for reminding us!

Also, it's a ship. The boats are those yellow things hanging above deck 4....

And it's Castaway KEY, like what you use in a lock, not KAY like the woman's name.
Sometimes hubby and I get a real snicker when we hear people talking and someone is acting like they're really knowledgeable but they're talking about how they're eating at Palo's on the boat when they get back from Castaway Kay, instead of eating at Parrot Kay.

Actually, this is incorrect. Cay CAN be pronounced either key or ka (with a long a sound).

This is from Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

One entry found for cay.

Main Entry: cay
Pronunciation: 'kE, 'kA
Function: noun
Etymology: Spanish cayo -- more at KEY
Date: 1707
: a low island or reef of sand or coral

If you go to their website ( http://www.m-w.com/home.htm ) they even have recordings of how to say the word.

Hope this helps clear things up!

I know it's a to-MAY-to/to-MAH-to debate, but I like to stir things up. I always knew that both pronunciations were generally correct, but someone once explained to me that it's a regional thing as to which one is correct depending on where you are. I don't remember the specifics tho'. Maybe some else out there does!

I agree 100% with it being Palo... but I do have a question as to never using it in the possessive form as BeanoC suggests. Beano says since it is not a person it should never be possessive... I am not sure that is correct. If I am referring to the menu from that establishment, I believe I can say Palo's menu... as it is Palo that is the 'owner' of the menu. It would be similar to be saying my "computer's hard drive." -- of course, without the apostrophe it would be incorrect.

but then again... i ain't no good at this there grammar stuff - so, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks

BeanoC,

Actually objects can be possesive. Those are the tree's branches. The cave's hole is covered etc.

I can't wait for our upcoming Disney trip. We are staying at the Poly and going to O'hanas for dinner. Then we are going on the Disney Cruise. I can't wait to get on the boat. The first thing we are going to do is make our reservation at Palos. It will be a nice vacation from pedants. :jester:

The cast members and others who call this place PALOS must live in Michigan where I am constantly bombarded by people who work at FORDS and shop at KROGERS and MEIJERS.

I draw the line at not correcting the "I seen..." nails on a blackboard to me. This seems to be a Flint/Monroe thing....

I'll just call PALO "the adult-only resturant" to be safe :earsboy:

(I sure hope I never said Palo's, but if I did, I will accept my lashes without complaint.)

Since we're discussing it, I know that the dictionary started accepting both in the recent past, but I have to tell you, I cringe when I hear Caribbean pronounced carRIBean and not CaribBEan. It is the PIrates of the CaribBEan not the piRATES of the CaRIBbean.
And it's DAYta not Dahta.
And it's NU-CLE-AR NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NUK-U-LAR!!!!
Sorry. I just lost my mind. I'm back now.

Hugs to all

What a fun thread I started! LOL!!!

In terms of the menu, when I refer to it, I still do not use an "s".
If I were showing someone the menu, I would not say "This is the Palo's menu" I would say, "This is the Palo menu".
Just me......

Things people say that are incorrect about DCL that annoy me:
Palos
Castaway or Parrot KAY
Boat instead of ship
You are going on the Big Red Boat

And yes, people in Michigan do say Fords.....DRIVES ME NUTS!

::yes::

Great thread!!!! Although posters referring Palo as Palo's always annoyed me, i felt it was a little OCD to call someone out on it....

Thanks for doing the dirty work so tactfully!!!

Glad to see people get so upset about this stuff! Just inspires me to say it wrong! Especially the KEY/KAY one. If they want it pronounced KEY, spell it Key. First stop on the Western is not Cay West (pronounced KEY) it is Key West (pronounced (KEY). We like to vacation at Hawks Cay on Duck Key (Pronounced KAY followed by KEY). So I will continue the tradition, as blessed by Three Circles and Mr Webster, of calling a Cay a KAY and a Key a KEY!!

Palo - Palos....Pole - Poles - who cares! Which pole in Venice did they name it after?

Time to go! Got to go shopping at Walmarts and Macy.

LOL izzinmac! Way to keep perspective. I decided I need this vacation more than I originally thought. My new mantra is
"Switch to Decaf, Myles!" Thank you for giving me the little kick I needed. Calming down is a good thing. I should do it more often. The nuke-u-lar thing still irritates the heck out of me though...
switch to decaf
switch to decaf
switch to decaf
