I'm posting this more as a proactive thread in hopes of limiting new wild and crazy rumors of a 5th gate or new resort. You may have seen the land west of Hollywood Studios and north of Osceola pkwy being cleared out. Unfortunately Disney is just digging a big hole in the ground. . . Yep, literally just digging a big hole. They need dirt for the HS expansion of the new lands so they're digging a "water runoff retention pond" and using that dirt to build onto at HS. Makes sense because why buy that much dirt when you could just dig it up.

Now, the area just a little north of that will be the future launch location for the star wars firework show so that's a plus.

This has been covered in the DHS construction thread a few times. All of the 5th gate rumors generally come from the flamingo crossing area by 429.

Retention ponds are part of any large new construction project to control the excess water shed created by the increase in impervious ground cover. While they will use the fill removed where ever it is needed before paying for fill, it is far from digging a hole for fill. It is a required part of the construction project.

Others along with myself have covered these in the DHS construction thread.

Whoa Grumpy, it was just a general, casual "FYI" thread. I guess I missed yours and the many other people's important memo stamped "latest and greatest" on it, LOL. Seriously though, I honestly just posted it because there are SO MANY people that I overhear every day talking about their theory's and what it could be. I should tell them to follow "rteetz" and "beerdave" on here so they are kept abreast with up to the minute news. Have a magical day guys!

I didn't mean to come across as grumpy. If I did I apologize. I just don't want multiple threads with the same information in them. Maybe this FYI thread would work better on the theme parks board? I know I haven't seen many people asking about those projects on this board recently.

Yeah, the retention pond is the actual purpose of the excavation, using the fill for the expansion where the new parking will go is just a side benefit. Keep and eye out for a conveyor to be installed soon over World Drive to carry the fill from the pond to where it's being used for the expansion.

I was just correcting a little mis statement-- (it seems I've arrived just in time) lol . about the intentions of digging the "hole". From your post I felt you were mis informed about the construction process and wanted to put accurate information on this DISCUSSION FORUM. Take a pill.

You think they will do that? It would be cool. I guess it depends on how far they have to move it into the new site-- If they need to truck it once on the other side, they may just load trucks initially? Also it probably will depend on the composition of the fill they are finding....

The conveyor was part of the permit so it should be happening.

Here is the diagram from the permit. This wasn't in the original permit for the construction access road, it was modified later to include it. They may have realzised that it would be logistically difficult to use trucks for this.

Ok-- not to be lame and quote my own post, but I thought this was pretty good-- did no one get it? Or did no one care....

It seems to me that the management in Burbank has been digging out of a "big hole" in Orlando that's been there for about 10 years and need to for about another 10 to "fill it in"

But that's just me.
