I just spoke with my mom and she told me about a lady she spoke to today. This friend went to WDW last month. She told my mom the resort name but my mom couldn't remember. She will call her tomorrow to find out for sure. Anyway the lady said that she and her whole family came down with vomiting and diarahea. She said that after they got better they had them leave and everyone else in the building and had the whole place disinfected including bedding, curtains, carpets. They even scrubbed down the walls. Did anyone else have this happen to? I can't wait to find out what building this was. She said she spoke to other guests in the building and they too had this sickness. Strange!

very odd... hope you are able to get more info... i'm surprised it did not make the newspapers...

That is strange. To be honest and not trying to start a panick, I've noticed many of the trip reports and posts with people mentioning that they'd had vomiting or someone in the family has. There's a lot of it going around here too. We're heading down the 23rd and I think I'm going to take some of those wipes to do the room with this time.

Just wondering where this happened at......... do we at least know which resort??

My mom will try to get a hold of her and find out what resort. She said it was onsite and my mom remembered she said that they disinfected her entire building. It happened in October.

Gastrointestinal upset is much more common among travelers than it is among those who remain at home. Doctors call it traveler's sickness or traveler's diarrhea. Each of us is accustommed to the germs in our home settings, but when we go to strange places there are strange germs that our immune systems aren't used to; since our immune systems don't yet know how to fight those germs, we get sick more often.

In addition, we tend to be exposed to more germs when we travel, as compared with when we stay home, simply because we're around other people more than when we are in our normal routines. On vacation, you are around large crowds every day, whereas most of us don't live like that every day at home. In WDW as compared with home, you're touching more railings and handles and door knobs and doors and elevator buttons and tables and trays and water fountains and public bathrooms and exchanging more money/cards with sales clerks.

Add on top of all that that, compared with when they stay at home, travelers eat less nutritiously, drink less water, are more stressed, and get more physical exercise than they are generally accustommed to. ALL of these variables COMBINED lead to traveler's sickness.

I am glad to see they are taking all precautions to stop this. My kids both got the cruise ship virus that was going around, a few years ago. Not fun at all! Poor handwashing and having a ton of people all together makes these viruses spread easily. We are taking numerous small bottles of Purell with us to clean our hands lots. It's easy to take with you and easy to use. Also, I have extremely dry hands. Constant hand washing only exacerbates this. Purell, however, is somewhat moisturizing.

DH used to get sick for a few days every time we went to Disney. Now he only drinks bottled water, and hasn't had a problem since we started this habit.

I realize people get sick on vacation. I wasn't blaming Disney for making them sick. Geez, I wasn't even hinting at that aspect. I just thought it strange that they took the precaution of evacuating and disinfecting an entire building. I had never heard of them doing that.

I was sick when we went in 2003- drinking only bottled drinks is my plan this time.

I find it strange too, so strange in fact that I have to think it is an unfounded rumor. You can't really disinfect a hotel, anyway.

Sounds similar to the Norwalk Virus that was on the cruise ships a few years ago.

I'm interested to see what resort this was at. Sometimes people say "oh, we're staying onsite." When I ask where, they say "Comfort Inn Main Gate." They think that is the same thing as "onsite." :confused3

Anytime we leave our home, we all drink bottled water. FL tap water is exremely different tasting than our own.

Maybe that was the problem

You certainly can disinfect a room. I don't think it is a rumor either. This lady does not start rumors! LOL! I will try to find out the hote though.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It was on the Disney cruise ships also, right? They would know exactly what to do since they've already dealt with it.

And your second point.........yea,............that happened to me too. My friend said they were going to her DH's conference in Orlando and they were staying at the Hyatt.......right on the monorail. :rotfl: Sorry, it's not that I'm laughing at her ignorance, heck, I'm no expert at WDW.......but the thought of a Hyatt,....well, it's just too funny to me. :teeth:

I obviously IS a rumor...it may or may not be unfounded however.

Okay. Found out she was staying at the All Stars Sports. I would love to talk to her friend myself. I might have to beat the phone number out of my mother! LOL!

Yes you can disinfect a hotel. Why would you think you couldn't?? :confused3 What do you think they do with cruise ships??

I don't understand why it's obviously a rumor. :confused3 Yes, it's 2nd hand information, but it sounds like the source is known and it's not just hearsay. Yes, track down that phone number! :)

Regardless, I'm glad that Disney is taking action. Not fun to get sick on vacation, especially something like that.
