So tonight we decided to skip the ADR we had originally had and have dinner at Jiko. We walked into Jiko and asked what the wait would be for 2 - they said they could seat us immediately. I had heard such WONDERFUL reviews about Jiko here on the DIS and my expectations were through the roof!!! We were seated and ordered two unsweet teas with lemon. Our drinks arrived along with a basket of breads. We then ordered appetizers which arrived within about 10 minutes. DH ordered the Lamb "Patis" which is pulled lamb rolled in phyllo, with mint-cilantro chutney. He enjoyed this very much - it was his first time eating lamb - he said it was very mild, not spicy and he loved the dipping sauce that it came with. For my appy I had the Taste of Africa which included Kalamata Olive Hummus, Durban Tikka Masala, and Malay Spinach-Lentil Dip with Lentil Pappadam, whole wheat lavosh, and flaxseed Naan bread. Ok, so you probably can't even pronounce any of that....neither could I
The only thing I remotely liked was the olive hummus - everything else was WAY spicy and weird tasting... Next we ordered our main courses. I ordered the Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce. This was SPECTACULAR!!!!! I totally enjoyed this dish - the DIS didn't steer me wrong on this one!!!! The filet was cooked to perfection, the mac & cheese had a great creaminess to it, and the sauce was rich and wonderful!! DH decided that since he loved his Lamb appetizer he would go with the Braised Lamb Shank with toasted couscous, baby spinach, and berbere sauce. He didn't like this at all.....He would have liked it cooked more, he hates the sauce (too spicy) and the couscous was mushy. DH is a huge eater and only ate a few bites of this.... We had horrible tastes in our mouth but figured NO BODY can mess up dessert, so we ordered. DH ordered the house-made Lemon Curd with pomegranate and blueberry compote, white chocolate biscotti and sour cream ice cream. He didn't like this either and neither did I. The lemon curd had NO sugar at all - very tart, the blueberries didn't "go" and the sour cream ice-cream was definitely sour!!!! He was really disappointed!! I am a chocoholic and went with the Tanzanian Chocolate Cheesecake with chocolate ganache, Amarula sauce, and lavender ice cream. The ice cream tasted like mushed up flowers, the chocolate cheesecake was very bitter and warm, and the sauce tasted like alcohol.... YUCK!!!!! This was the worst dessert I have ever eaten!!!! I was so disappointed in this meal, sooooo disappointed..... DH and I will not return here. It's not worth the 2 credit in our opinion. I did love my filet, but other than that the meal was terrible. Maybe I just had too high expectations, or maybe it was just an off night
The main problem was the spices - food was WAY too spicy and had very odd flavors... Oh well, maybe DH and I just need normal food and can't expand our horizons THAT much
