Cider on Board?

I am not a beer drinker. I do enjoy a good, craft cider, though, and try not to be a rule-breaker. So, I have a few questions:

1. If I bring a six-pack of 12 oz. cans of cider, would they be considered the same as beer, and thus allowable under the current alcohol policy?

2. I notice that O'Gill's has Strongbow on draught. While not my favorite, it's definitely better than Woodchuck or Angry Orchard. Is it served anywhere else, or only there?

3. Can I use the beer mug deal (22 oz. mug, refilled for the price of a 16 oz.) for the Strongbow?

1. Unless it says "beer" it's not considered beer.

On the magic you can use the "beer" mug for cider, I dont drink beer and bought and used the mug for cider on my December cruise.

Thanks! Prospects are looking up. 22 oz is about twice what I normally drink at a time, but hey, it's vacation, and the mug is cool. :)

Was on the wonder a few months ago and they had 2 different bottled ciders from Sweden. One was a pear - I enjoyed it a lot. I think that the other was a strawberry- but I didn't have the opportunity to try it out. This was in Cadillac Lounge. So maybe different venues have different selections. In a couple of weeks I will be exploring the wonder again to see what she has onboard.

Thanks for this info. I prefer my ciders as dry as possible, so the pear/strawberry may or may not suit. (Cherry cider can be surprisingly good, without being super sweet.) In any case, it's nice to hear that DCL is working in some cider options on-board.

The pear wasn't as sweet as I have had in the past. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it

I AM PRETTY SURE THIS WOULD BE OK. Beer and cider fall into the same alcohol percentage bracket and are sold together in the store as well as in bars. Worst case scenario they pull it when you board the ship.

I'm pretty sure I got it in more than one place but it's been a few years.

INDEED! (Kind of goes with my explanation to your first question..)

I answered above

The 12 ounce cans look a lot like beer cans. I wonder if anyone out there has experience in bringing cider on board. I've brought a 6-pack of beer on once and they hardly glanced at it, but I have an honest face. :)

For purely selfish reasons, I admit that I like these answers much better than PrincessSchmoo's. :D

Is this something that I could call DCL, and ask about? Would even that be a "definitive" answer, or does it depend upon the personnel on the ship at any given time?

I bring a 6-pack of cider onboard instead of beer all the time and no one has said anything in 5 plus cruises since the new policy. Honestly, they barely look at it.
Yes, you can use the beer mug on cider, they just charge you the 16 oz cost of the cider.
Draught cider on the magic is available on the pool deck. You can also get it in cans from the other bars.

Glad to hear this.

And, I realize that the worse-case (no pun intended) scenario is that my cider gets confiscated until the end of the cruise. I just don't want to be seen as someone trying to break the rules. Doesn't seem like a great first impression to make (especially since we're already talking about booking a second cruise).

On last year's ebta, I brought a few bottles of cider onboard purchased in port (Wales). After checking the labels to confirm they were cider and not liquor, security let me take them onboard to my stateroom.

Was it Rekordelig or Koppaberg? These are very popular in the UK. The Strawberry and lime tastes more like a cocktail than Cider. The pear one is like a sweet cider.

If you call DCL, they will tell you "beer" only as that's the way the policy is worded -- the policy is not worded by alcohol content or where it's sold, etc.

In reality it will depend on the security personnel at the terminal when you arrive. PP is correct that the worst-case scenario is your six-pack gets confiscated and you have to pick it up at debarkation; just the cider would be denied boarding, not the passengers ;)

Enjoy your cruise!

It's Rekordelig! I found the Strawberry Lime, in a 17 oz. bottle, at the bar that overlooks the family pool on Deck 9. Have you tried looking at the various bar menus that are available online? That's how I found out the Wonder having Rekordelig (which is my favorite).

I found a Rekordelig sighting on the Disney Wonder, during a Valentine's Day cruise, from the Cadillac Lounge (skip to 13:30):

Thanks both! Good to know
